Aldi’s Lobster Tails are back and this time from Australia. Have bought them previously and were fantastic. Made lobster rolls with them every year and the family loved them, enjoy 👍

"I wish Pinchy were here to enjoy this"

    oh god that’s tasty! sobs

  • +4

Tried this one year and tasted disgusting…

    • Are you sure you bought the lobster tail and not something else?

      • +18

accidentally picked up the premium lobster buttholes 2pk

    • +3

I second that. The quality of the lobster tails was pretty bad and disgusting. People can't taste the issue?

    • +1

      Too crunchy.

  • +4

Roughly how many rolls from each of these aldi packs? This would be 13 ounces so just short of the 16 ounces in that recipe? I wish the yanks would get with the metric system, no wonder their rockets keep crashing

    • +1

The recipe says to use 1/4lb per roll, which is 115g. So taking the shell into account, these Aldi packs would likely have enough meat for 2 Rolls

      • Thanks!

  • +3

Nah thanks. Nuthin' beats a freshie.

So this isn’t a sale just an ad for Aldi (it’s not an everyday sale)

    ALDI Premium Lobster Tails

    Oxymoron…

  • +1

… from Australia as in made in Australia? If so, will try.

    • +9

The box says "Made in Australia from <10% Australian ingredients", which probably means the garlic butter. It claims they're "wild caught" from "Major Fishing Area 41", which is the Atlantic coast of South America.

      • Wow… that's very different from the "Made in Australia" in their product description, leaving out that critical detail. It's also odd how companies are allowed to use "less than" in their ingredients desciptions it may be 0.01% Aussie ingredients for all we know.

        • +1

My favorite description is still made from local or imported ingredients.

Don't you hate it when your food isn't made with neither local or important ingredients.

      • Could have been conceived in Australian waters and then migrated across the oceans

    • +1

      made = packed

    Still $92/kg

    Doesnt seem especially cheap

    • I thought that said $3.99 and I thought this was an amazing deal… Too bad it's the 10x the price lmao. Very expensive but worth getting a cop?

      • If its $3.99 you have to use a stronger word than just amazing

        • "lobsterrific"?

    • If you take head out of weight it is ok

  • Never had lobster. Might have to give it a shot.

    • +18

No need to do that, they are already dead

    • +2

If that the case try a proper restaurant lobster so you have some benchmark, if you try this first you might be disappointed. I try this before, its not bad but not same class as “lobster” that you think of.

      • Wouldn't is be the other way around? Try this first without having something better/pricier for it to be compared too (presumably poorly)

        • try this first the assume all lobster is like this and never try again that what i mean. Ruins first experience of trying lobster? Basically what i am trying to say is lobster dont taste like this 😂

          • @huu: Ah, OK, also sensible.

      • If you're in Melbourne, have lobster with a mobster*

*conditions apply, mobster may not be free

    • +1

Think of the most succulent juicy BBq prawn you have ever eaten. That is what a good lobster would taste like.

Think of a prawn that was boiled. That is what this will taste like.

  • +3

Woolworths normally sells lobster tails for 9 dollars each. I dont think garlic and butter cost that much extra.

    • +2

Yeah but it's Aldi and their deals are "limited" unlike everyone else so they're allowed to sell at normal price.

  • +3

frozen lobsters taste awful, its the garlic and butter that make this one taste nice.

  • How are these? Heard frozen lobster tails can turn out mushy.

  • +1

    Had these…not a fan.

    • No, you'd probably need at least 6 of the tails to make a fan.

  • +1

Ahh I remember the good old covid days where you could buy a fresh(ish) lobster at Woolies for a lobster ($20)

    • +2

That doesn't sound like a great trade

    • they do it every year around Christmas but the quality was poor in my experience

  • +1

I'm not on the bones of my arse financially, but $35 for a bit of imported lobster is a bit steep IMO. But each to their own.

  • going by Op link https://www.foodiecrush.com/lobster-rolls/
to make it like this roll, where or how do you buy these specific rolls? its so nice and fluffy - i dont think its easy to buy these at woolies/aldi is it?

    • They look similar to brioche rolls, which are buttery and somewhat sweet, so you could look for those.

  • frozen yuck!

  • Works out at $92/kg and presumably some of that weight is the garlic butter. I would personally go WA lobsters if I wanted lobster and was spending that much. But then I never really go for lobsters now as I much prefer Moreton Bay Bugs or Balmain Bugs. My local fish shop is doing raw MBBugs for $39/kg, Cooked $59/kg or Balmain for $29/kg cooked. The garlic butter part is super easy, it's literally just fresh crushed garlic melted into butter.

IMO if you try bugs you won't want to go back to lobster and they are cheaper too. Perfect for rolls, but I just have them on their own the garlic butter and salad. So yum!

    • Do you cook your own bugs? Is it tricky with timing?

      • +1

I usually buy the cooked ones, split them in half, take out the digestive tract and innards, put them open side down on a hot pan (or bbq) for a minute or so until it's warm and slightly brown, then pour over the garlic butter and sprinkle with chopped parsley

I've also done this with fresh ones and it works out well

They don't take long to cook and like prawns they are better not over cooked, but I find them more forgiving than either lobsters or prawn. The meat is very sweet and have a great texture.

We have them every year as part of our christmas lunch and they are my favourite part of lunch. We stopped getting prawns at christmas because if you eat them side by side, the prawns are so meh, compared to the bugs.

I should probably stop telling people how great they are so prices don't go up.

    • You'd have to do the shell weight to meat analysis to fully understand cost per kg.
