Thanks, this should really be copied & pasted then negged to highlight it -

      • Do not import any Xiaomi phones to Australia, at this stage. There's no guarantee it will work after the 3G shutdown, as telcos need to selectively whitelist devices for use with our networks. Buy from a local supplier for the best compatibility and ease of returns.

      As of 31 Oct 2024 -

As Australia’s 3G networks are being phased out, some Xiaomi Redmi and POCO users may experience connection issues on certain Australian mobile networks. This is not due to any compatibility issues with our devices for 4G or 5G networks. Instead, the disconnection results from new ACMA regulations effective October 28, 2024, requiring carriers to restrict devices that can’t support 000 emergency calls over 4G or 5G from accessing their networks.

As Xiaomi’s authorised distributor in Australia, we’ve ensured that all models we’ve brought into the country meet local regulatory and network requirements. Each of these products supports 000 emergency calls over 4G and 5G. We are working closely with Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone to update their whitelists to include all authorised Xiaomi models. Once this process is complete, customers will regain uninterrupted network access on local 4G and 5G networks.

If you purchased your Xiaomi device from one of our authorised retailers—including JB HiFi, Harvey Norman, Amazon Australia (not including third-party sellers), Mobileciti, or directly from our website Xiaomitech.com.au—since December 2023, you can be assured your device meets these regulatory standards. Full connectivity will be restored as soon as the carriers complete their whitelist updates. In the meantime, you may try to contact your carrier to request unblocking of your device. If you prefer not to wait, or if your carrier is unable to assist, please reach out to your retailer for exchange or return options.

Do you really live in Sydney Op? Seems odd to be posting this after everything that's happened.

Run as fast as you can the other way.
    Don't touch this.

  • +8

I'm guessing julancer is not Sydney based (as per profile) but rather in China.

If you lived in Australia you would be more than aware of new phone requirements. FFS.

Agreed, just saw this deal and thought… who would be ballsy enough to post a deal for a phone that would be banned in about 30 seconds of turning it on…

Think I am going to hold off on the RedMi and Poco deals until this telco mess is sorted.

      Also;

      Poco can’t send text, cheers.

    Thanks OP

    Bought 300👍

do these get hot enough to melt ❄️❄️❄️s?

  • this will still work over wifi, right?

I just need a cheap phone for my kids to play and watch on so they don't destroy my main phone.

i wouldn't be getting any mobile service for it and will just use over wifi. will this work?

    • Over Wifi, yes. But if you just wanted a beater phone, just get on Fartbook and get one from there for about $50. There are literally bucket loads of people selling their non-compliant phones that have been banned for next to nothing, and some of them are almost new.

  • Uncertified phones shouldn't be purchased until the 3G and E000 whitelists/blacklists have settled down.

Buy from a local retailer that you feel confident you can get a refund from (with ease). Or wait a few months until everything settles down and see what's what.

  • Speaking as somebody who bought a new OnePlus 9 pro from Amazon UK 4 months ago, after checking it supported all the necessary bands and volte, only to be binned by the ACMA regulation and default blacklisting, I'm really angry at seeing this post.

A lot of people don't do much research and, while I do agree with buyer beware, it is unfair and wrong for ozbargain to allow this.

  • There is a list of TACs that are whitelisted in Australia right now, please follow the discussion here for community guidance on what Xiaomi phone to purchase.

You can start by referring from the comment here (and a page before that)

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15873883/redir

Please note that the info is crowdsource so nobody really knows if one specific model will be whitelisted or not, it's completely up to the Telco to decide whether to allow or block the device.
