Now that Optus has banned many cellphones from other countries, will this even work in Australia?

    • +14

This is an Australian model and a Motorola

      • -3

That means very little. Have a read.
        https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-11-04/australian-4g-5g-user…
Retailers were happily selling phones that wouldn't work after 3g shut down even though it was well known it was going to shut down this year. Don't rely on it being an approved phone just because an Aussie retailer is selling it.

        • +1

But Motorola has been manufacturing VoLTE and 5G phones compatible with the Australian 4G/5G network for decades. They have regional models for our countries (AU, UK, CAN and so on) and regulatory-specific ones (US, GE etc.)

Motorola are owned by Lenovo, who yes is Chinese, but who has been manufacturing hardware for Western countries almost longer than anyone else still in the tier 1 market.

You're not wrong in that it's worth checking - definitely some models were sold on 3G only or at the very end of their lifecycles - but brand new Motorolas will not have that issue. I've been buying Motorolas for a decade and my G4 Plus (2016) still works to this day (albeit very slow and out of date!)

    • +3

The phone isonly missing 1 5g band so it should be fine

      • What band would that be and where would I be missing out on connectivity eg say Telstra / Optus ?

      • Do you know if this phone works with VOLTE? (how do you tell?)

    • +2

Why not change Telco? My Poco x3 pro still working perfect (belong)

      • Who does belong use for a provider?

        • +3

Belong uses a limited part of the Telstra network. It's worth noting that I had better reception with Belong than I do with Boost who uses full Telstra network.

          • @ohgee: Un-negging because I'm glad you asked.

Telstra are getting worse, and have been considering moving to another provider on the Telstra network - Aldi mobile, Belong, something like that.

      • That's because your Poco supports band 28.
All Oz telcos are mandated to use band 28 now.
if you do not have band 28, your mobie will be blocked

        • +1

And sometimes if you do have band 28 (and all the required bands and more) it will still be blocked.

          Thanks Telstra

Yeah I'm still salty about it. Will be for a while.

        • band 28 has been in use by australian phones now for a longggg time, haven’t seen an australian certified phone in the last 5 years without band 28, if you have grey import could be an issue, we used to have argument years ago on oz bargain “ but i live in the city and don’t need band 28 so i will get a phone from overseas”. certification for australia also includes power levels and a few other things.

  • +1

This or G85 for camera quality and lagging in between taking photos in sequence ?

    • +3

50 Neo is way better than G85 is every way unless you want a curved screen. This one has much faster processor, 50% more RAM, 100% more storage, 2x the charging wattage, wirelss charging, non curved screen, 5 OS updates (vs 2)……

      • -4

But no memory card slot though and screen is larger with g85

        • +2

You can't have it all !

      • Also will add that this 50 Neo includes telephoto lens on the camera.

      • +2

G85 also has a Qualcomm modem, not some crappy MediaTek one.

        • I wouldn't call MediaTek crappy , is their performance sub par ? I doubt it .

          • @Murkymerv: Their modem performance is very clearly subpar.

      • -2

Can you get a weeks charge on the battery like with the G85? If not, it's not better in every way curved screen or not. It occurs to me the more powerful the processor etc the shporter the battery life. For some of us who want a phone primarily as a phone and not an internet device, the longer a phone can go without recharge is important.

        • You can check out gsmarena for the review. It seems to have good battery life. If you can get a weeks charge on G85, it means you are not using any function of the phone (other than standby), maybe a Nokia is more suitable for your use case.

    • +1

      camera quality

      Neither. Check reviews.

  • Awesome deal!

  • great phone except for the small screen which is a deal breaker to some

    • +15

Wild modern times when a 6.4" screen is considered small.

      • +4

Anything less than 7" is small. Make mi Max great again.

        • +2

Look, I told you it was cold, stop bringing it up!

        • +1

          Your poor wife…

      • @Flyerone that's because the screens are now so skinny.

    • +7

Some people like me much prefer smaller phone. Still holding on to my s20 5g.

      • Ive just upgraded to a pixel 9 pro but still using the s20 + 5g instead, turns out the pixel feels just that little bit too small

    • +3

It's a lot of phone for $400. The screen is probably too big for me, I like smaller phones.

  • Do Motorola have a screen lock function similar to the game launcher on Samsung phones? Where you can have a game running behind a locked, very dull screen?

  • +3

Dimensity 7300 slower than the Snapdragon 870 in my old Poco F3. Just checking. Got excited there for a moment when I saw a Dimensity on top of the processor pile - the 9400. Not that I expected this mid range phone to have a blazing fast processor.

  • Its a super deal for those needing a phone without breaking bank.

  • Memory not expandable :(

  • Is this better than my moto g85 looks way more expensive to

    • Yeah it's better. As of the hence the higher price.

  • I'm very tempted by this. The updates and wireless charging is why I haven't gone with other Motorola models. Wondering if it will go cheaper on black friday. Or better models will come down to this price.

    • Very unlikely. Motorola's are usually discounted like this at least a year after release. This one is only 4 months old and already 43% off

      • Should we be concerned?

  • Bought one of these last month from the $500 deal and have loved it.

Great screen, good specs, nice minimalistic version of Android. Camera is a bit laggy, but this can apparently be fixed by using Gcam instead.

    Would highly recommend.

    • +2

Is the camera quality decent? I've owned a couple mid range motos in the past and they have been pretty underwhelming

      • Coming from a Poco F3: yeah it's actually decent.

Camera is about on par with my partner's S21. Telephoto is also a nice addition at this price range.

  • -3

Problem is garbage MTK chipset !

    • +12

Stop living in the past, Mediatek chips are fine now, great even. They literally have the performance crown over snapdragon for flagships.

Hell, If I could choose I'd take a MTK chip over exynos any day of the week which many people are running on their Samsungs.

      • +2

Mediatek chips are fine now, great even

Generally yes, just not this one, especially compared to one of the many Poco phones that we can no longer use. e.g. the X6 Pro has twice the cpu power (at least on paper) and it's in the same price range.

        • +1

Yes I'm aware. Was just a general reference. For local AU stock, this is about what you can expect performance wise at $400.

      • +3

Their modems are still crap, compared to Qualcomm's, but then, so are everyone else's.

    • +1

      +1

Dimensity 7300 is a fake upgrade over the 7200 as well - slower CPU cores and worse radio performance:

      7200: NR DL 2CC 200MHz bandwidth, 4.7Gbps
      7300: NR DL 3CC 140MHz bandwidth, 3.27Gbps

Combined with MTK's typical shoddy modem performance in lower signal/higher noise environments and zero development support, this will be $299 by Jan

  • I broke my Pixel 4a and I'm currently thinking about getting this. Not sure if I should wait for Black Friday sales and pay more for a Pixel 8a/9 or pull the trigger for this. I'm not really too fussed about performance. So, this seems to be an appropriate phone (plus, it's a compact phone which I like). My main concern is whether I could trust Motorola's promise on "5 OS updates" (assuming it meant 5 years of updates; otherwise I don't know what it really means).

  • +3

Great deal but be mindful if you're likely to be in areas where phone reception is an issue

4G/5G – Suitable for City and suburbs – Pass

First, we applaud the availability of an eSIM in a phone of this price – excellent. We also applaud Motorola for being one of the few offering dual ringtones.

But the facts are that it only finds one tower at fairly average speeds and strengths.

    https://cybershack.com.au/reviews/motorola-edge-50-neo-super…

    • +1

Seeing as though we can only get 4g and 5g…

Only reason I'm looking for a phone, because telstra blocked mine. No sim, still says I can make emergency calls. Telstra cheap money hungry effs.
      /Rant

But I think I might be tempted by this phone :)

      • +3

If you never travel outside major cities, you probably won't notice, but MediaTek modems are trash in the bush. Their signal range is terrible.

      • Use Voda. It still works fine. I grabbed the $7 Lebara SIM last week to test on my older, non-Telstra working phone, & it works fine.

        In two days, a pre-paid, 70GB for $10:

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/876189

I would have just shifted completely, but I'd just bought the Boost 365 day (of course). Will be using my G84 until the 365 are up then switch to Voda and back to my old phone.

    • +1

Excellent review and it reminded me that MediaTek modems are bad for reception, so no MediaTek for me. File for future reference.

      • Add google pixels and samsung(exynos) phones to that list too then I guess. Narrows down your options quite a bit :)

  • I have a pixel 6. Looking at Edge50 as a lot of the specs are better. Anyone have an opinion about Edge50 as an upgrade? Particularly camera?

    • I have the Edge 40, and for a mid range phone I am very happy! Pics are great, they even have dual capture pictures and videos, shortcut to camera function by flicking your wrist. Really happy with it, espesh for what you get at this price point.

    • +1

The biggest gotcha when it comes to the regular Edge 50 (non-Neo) is that it comes with a tragic support period of just two Android upgrades and three years of security upgrades. This contrasts with the Neo which provides five and five.

Note some seemingly reputable sites such as GSMArena and Cybershack have wrongly overstated the support period for the Edge 50. Motorola's own support page confirms that the security support ends on July 2027.

EDIT: For the rest of the Edge 50 lineup:
      Edge 50 Neo – August 2029
      Edge 50 Fusion – April 2028
      Edge 50 Pro – February 2028

      • the battery would be crapped out in 4 years , and replacements if not. original never seem to last as long as the factory ones, i got the fusion on the $439 deal, and expect to bin it by april 2028.

  • +1

The covering on the back look likes it will wear fast.

    • +1

It comes with a case afqik

      • Yup case included.

  • This one or samsung a55? On comparison on gsm arena, a55 beats on performance.

    • A55 is near $600. Very different

      • Found on ebay for $488 with coupon

        • +1

Yeah I saw that too. Almost definitely an overseas seller, less warranty, and no customer service. I thought about it but decided not to get it.
However the A55 was $430 6 months ago from amaysim, so I believe sub500 is the appropriate price (ignoring the gouging because of the 3g shutdown). It'll come down I reckon.

5 OS upgrades in a Motorola?

Oh wait, 5 OS updates, all security I bet.

    • +3

5 ANDROID OS UPDATES and 5 yr security updates

      • +1

I'm still not going to believe their claim, they were at 1 OS upgrade for a long time and now they suddenly promise 5… I think I'll wait and see if they deliver.

        • +1

there is a push from google for longer update periods, think it’s due to crticism that apple support updates for longer periods than android. difference is it’s easy to get apple to replace battery if you have access to an apple store, where do you get replacement for motorola, they don’t have store fronts .

  • +1

Can someone please make a small phone for once. In 10 years all of us will be carrying 15" tablets to mAke calls.

  • I only see $697-$699 in their website.

    • +2

      Code TD300

  • +1

How can you tell if this will work with 3G shutdown with Optus/Telstra?

    These are the bands listed:
    5G Network 5G NR, 2600 (N38), 2300 (N40), 2500 (N41), 3700 (N77), 3500 (N78)
    4G Network 4G/LTE, 2100 (B1), 1800 (B3), 850 (B5), 2600 (B7), 900 (B8), 800 (B20), 700 (B28), 2300 (B40), 3500 (B42)
    3G Network 2100

    • +2

Doesn't matter about the bands too much. Just if telstra recognise the phone. My phone was blocked and does all the bands telstra needs. But they didn't care to test it.

Above comment states as this is sold is aus it will be fine.

      • +2

Yeah I checked the bands but I think it's insane that they can block fully functional phones because it wasn't sold in Australia. What a crazy world we live in

        • I also ended up buying the phone

          • +2

@Steve238: Yeah I bought this one too. Paid for it at a couple minutes before the deal expired.

Only bad thing I could find was the worse reception in rural areas, which is never me these days.

People rating it very highly at its RRP so I can't see any reason not to get this. 5 years update is and security and decent specs.

            • +2

              @teereb:

Only bad thing I could find was the worse reception in rural areas, which is never me these days.

Its weird nitpicking. Especially for a mid range phone. While it's probably somewhat true, google pixels tensor and the exynos chips in most Samsung phones are also notoriously poor in that regard yet it rarely gets brought up in ozb posts. And they're flagship devices at over double the price…. lol.

              • @bert-lifts: Hey thanks for that. It isn't something I have had to worry about before but knowing flagship phones have this issue is kinda relieving too I guess.

        • the importers pay to have regulartorty test done for power levels and interference and other aspects tested to comply with australia. standards, not a cheap process, not surprised they block if hasn’t been tested and certified for australia.

  • Got the fusion 50 for the partner, a better case was ordered, one week away. Phone gets dropped, smashed screen… $350 if we want to repair

  • So these has same specs as iPhone 16? And charge so cheap, no wonder Motorola is doing better in sales.

    • +2

So these has same specs as iPhone 16?

      ?

    • -1

      Far from.

      • -1

Exactly it's on par with a 2018 iPhone XS in terms of SoC performance lol.

  • So will buyers get a Black one or will it be PANTONE Lattè like in the pictures?
