Wanting Dash Cam Recommendations for Ford Mondeo

Hi everyone, following a traumatic car accident I’m keen to get a dash cam. I have a 2018 Ford Mondeo.

Key features I would like out of the dash cam;

  • Forward facing camera as well as a rear facing camera. My car does have a rear reversing camera, I don’t know if it’s possible to hook up that?
  • Can record when parked - however is this bad for the car battery to do so? Maybe not if so. Is it possible to only have parking record on sometimes - I don’t really need it when I’m parked at home, but when I’m parked in public and when I’m travelling somewhere overnight it would be helpful
  • Easy to access footage. And I also don’t want a subscription service to access footage.
  • Footage is actually useable and clear to see.
  • Doesn’t melt in Australian sun!

And if it’s possible to do it for under $400 that would be wonderful.

Thank you all!!

Viofo are good. Blackvue are expensive
But a cheap crappy one would generally be good enough to prove who is at fault in an accident, even without Ozbargain style MS Paint diagrams

    • Viofo are good. Blackvue are expensive

      But are Blackvue better ?

      • +6

No. Mine would restart itself in the heat and the rear camera failed after 2 years. Got a viofo now.

Surely by now there is an AI powered dashcam that detects incidents and automatically creates an MS Paint diagram detailing said incident.

    • +8

Yes, the new model out early next year will also post a forum topic on OzBargain asking for who is at fault…

      • +2

I've been in consultation with the developers. Looks like a 2nd quarter of 2026 release.

        • Luv to have AI generated ms paint diagram…

+1 for viofo. These usually have capacitors which work a lot better in the Aussie heat.

You need realistic expectations of the footage. You're not going to get super clear footage at a distance or at night. Poor lighting and fast objects cause issues. There is a lot of footage of different dash cams on youtube which can help guide your choice.

Dash cams have microSD cards so you can pull them out. Some have wifi capabilities - 2.4ghz is slow, I get around 11MB/s using 5ghz on my A119 mini2

    • So you'd recommend ?
Any particular model , probably wait till black friday?

      • +1

Definitely recommend. I'm happy with the A119 mini2 but this is front facing only.

Look for features that you want and your budget eg GPS, 5ghz wifi, dual channel (rear camera), new Sony STARVIS 2 sensor, parking mode.

I'd check the historic pricing on ozb and if it's good enough pull the trigger. I bought mine on aliexpress when there was a decent monthly code.

        • What are your thoughts on this ;
Dashtek Argus II 4K Dash Cam with Wi-Fi

          • +1

@Murkymerv: It seems okay but it's not clear if it has a battery or capacitor and 4K isn't super great for a dash cam as it will fill up storage super quickly.

  • I got a viofo a while back from a deal posted here. No complaints.

No issues with parking mode draining the battery. From their website:

Both the hardwire kit and OBD power cable are designed with a low battery protection mechanism that automatically shuts down power when it detects the battery voltage is low, preventing battery drain. When you restart the vehicle, the battery will be recharged. So if you drive your car regularly, parking mode will not drain the battery.

Had the car in the garage un-driven for a couple of weeks recently when I was away on holiday. Battery was fine when I returned.

I was going to go for that Viofo A329 Pro or something like that… but I ended up going with the Vantrue N4 Pro 4K based off of video footage comaprisons from about 6 months ago. (I got it for ~$450 on sale from Amazon AU as well, so if anything goes wrong within or even outside of the warranty period, I'll get my money back :) )

Do some comparisons yourself as firmware updates can do alot.

Whatever you get, make sure it's got a capacitor, 4K recording resolution, and the new Sony Stravis 2 sensor. Slap in a high speed and high endurance microSD card and you can't really go wrong.

    • The beauty about the Viofo A329 is you can use a SSD for storage, faster, more capacity, more reliable, and cheaper than a MicroSD. But the A329 is expensive. Still way cheaper than Blackvue.

  • Does anyone have ideas about selecting an installer whose installation job does not void a new car warranty and most importantly does not interfere with the operation of airbags?

    • +1

Not me, but buy first….smack that plug into the cigarette lighter port so it records, then look for a professional installer.

My own relative had someone back into him at a red light then got the blamed for it. Did he buy the dashcam that I pestered him about? Yes. But it was sitting in it's box cause he was lazy to install it for weeks.

    • So, just to tell you my experience, I bought a 2023 Hyundai i30N hatch last year, purchased the dashcam etc myself and then actually came across a guy on Instagram (with an actual registered business etc) who specialises in dash cam installs for Hyundai's here in Sydney. I didn't have to take my car to him, he came to my house, did the install on my driveway and it was done extremely professionally and cleanly. Cabling went down the A pillar on the drivers side behind the curtain air bag so no dramas there and the cabling to the rear camera went along the bottom of the door sill to the rear of the car so no issue with the airbags there.

Also, an installation of a dashcam should not be invalidating your new car warranty if the installation is done professionally. If it helps to know, the rough installation cost of getting it hardwired in/pro installed is around $150.

      • Hey mate, care to share the installer's details please? Thanks

        • Yeah absolutely mate, happy to do so. If you open up your DM's I'll shoot you a message with the details.

          • @Devastator0: Done and sorry for the slow response. I've had some ridiculous quotes from a few that I've reached out to - $250 being the lowest. Would appreciate any recommendations. Thanks

  • My sister recently had a dashcam installed by Bendas (edit: they are in Sydney, I see you are in Brisbane so this is not helpful to you sorry): https://www.bendasinstallations.com.au/

She bought the dashcam itself from Viofo: https://www.viofo.com.au/product-category/car-dash-camera/

I have 2 Viofo's that have failed, won't be buying them again.
Had Blackvue before that failed and replaced.
Using Thinkware now and no issues so far in the 3 units I've owned. Just bought another kit today for $559. https://automotivesuperstore.com.au/thinkware-x1000d32?query…

    • Out of curiosity which model viofo? Some of them are known to get too hot and stop working.

      • +1

        A139 Pro 2ch.
Bought 2 of them, one failed completely and then the SD card slot broke, other one doesn’t record if the rear camera is attached.

        • There's been a few reports of the 4k models having issues.

    • +1

Do you know what caused them to fail? Heat? (i.e. Did they fail during the summer when in-car temperatures could be higher?) Dash cams in general seem to be quite prone to failure from what I've read which is a shame because they cost hundreds of dollars.

      • Not entirely sure, it could be a factor. They both started to fail between 2 years and 2.5 years.

  • Viofi 139pro

  • We've got 3 Blackvue 2CH cams in our cars - 1 x 750X & 2 x 750X Plus. I had them installed by a mobile installer who also supplied them and no issues with them so far at all. They record when parked till the car battery reaches a low voltage threshold then they turn off. You can add a external dedicated battery if you want but not cheap.I know they are on the high end of the price side but they've worked reliably for me. I configured them to connect to our home Wi-Fi so when the car is parked in our garage you can access the settings and footage from the mobile app. Blackvue has basic free cloud access for one camera, you can add more for a subscription fee but it's way too expensive, so I just setup the app to each of the cars regular drivers phones to that one camera. You can also directly access the camera via it's built-in Wi-Fi if you want or removed the SD card. Only issue I found with them is the collision detection for when parked is super sensitive by default and will detect a car door closing as a collision till you can get the settings right. My son will be buying a car soon and I'll probably get him a Blackvue for it.

I've been looking at dashcams more and more recently after seeing the absolute shocking state of drivers captured on Dash Cams of Australia's Youtube channel (more and more these days I catch myself slowly going through an intersection on a green light because of how many people seem to run red lights these days, low trust society here we come!). The amount of silly drivers captured driving on the wrong side of the road is absolutely shocking and frightening too albeit somewhat expected sadly.

Personally been considering the Viofo A229 Pro, but I will probably pay more attention to the dash cams being used in the clips to see which image quality I prefer and then balance that with other factors you mentioned (e.g. heat resilience being important).
