27 Year Old Looking to Buy Gaming PC - Budget $2,000

Looking to buy gaming PC with upcoming Black Friday sales in mind.

For reference I currently have a Legion 5 gaming laptop however pretty limited in terms of its capabilities (mostly playing League of Legends).

Mainly looking to comfortably play the new Call Of Duty with no issues! (which should hold it in good stead for most other games) and I guess it would be good if it was future proofed as much as possible given the price point $2,000.

Would love some advice from anyone who's across gaming PC's. Currently looking at "Nebula PC" and "TechFast" posts as both seem like they have some pretty good options but open to building one from the ground up if that gets me the best value.

Thankyou in advance to anyone taking time to give some tips or advice!

Edit: Is it worth waiting for Black Friday sales?

Just curious at what mentions your age has to do with buying a PC? how much weight on my offering has to be based on you being 27 years old?

    • +10

and we're practically at end of year - what's he gonna do when he gets to 28 ?

      • +4

sell it for a huge loss, make a post on ozbargain "28 Year Old Looking to Buy Gaming PC (Approx. $2,200 Budget)"

    • Hahaha very fair, I just saw it in other posts! should I edit to remove?

      • +9

Hell no, Leave it there… I'm not saying to remove it, just wondering where it fits into what recommendations people have…

"Now, if you were 32, I would recommend the…. But since you are only 27, maybe you would be better with a…"

Probably less RGB requirements compared to a 14yo.

OMG! my daughter needs a laptop for school next year and the first ones she went looking for at JB the other day was the MSI range with all the rainbow RGB light up keys. FFS. Sure, dad's going to buy you a $2,990 laptop for school because you want to look like your favourite Twitch streamer…

means hes not at mid life crisis terrority and doesnt need to splash 10k on it, along with a used ute to mix and pokemon cards (for the kids)

    • Well it might change if hes 70 year old and you have to recommend 720p 40 inch monitor for his eye sight lol

  • legion 5

    (mostly playing league of legends).

…a legion 5 struggles with LoL?

    • +3

To be fair, it's not called Legion of Legends. Or League of Legions. Or Legion of Lenovos.

      • +1

probably should buy a Lenovo PC

    • Fine with League but cannot handle anything else.
(Elden ring - runs fine, Hogwarts legacy - unplayable, Wukong - unplayable, Call of Duty - barely playable)

      • +1

What graphics card does it have?

        • +2

          Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060

Edit: Is it worth waiting for Black Friday sales?

Computer parts are very low margin and rely on volume to sell, so there is no 'seasonal' discount for building or buying PC's. You just buy when you think the parts are at a good price.

They can fluctuate depending on demand / supply and on the US/AU exchange rate. Best example of price fluctuation can be seen on SSD's: see last years deal for a 4TB SSD then look at the same item now.

You can expect better discounts on things that have larger margins, think accessories like mousepads and peripherals like gaming mice, keyboards, LCD monitors.

+1 for Nebula PCs. Though they each cost more than $2k, I have both a core i7 build with RTX 4070 SUPER and a Ryzen 7 7800X3D build with RTX 4070 TI SUPER (both 32GB RAM and nvme storage) and they run exceptionally well at 1440p mostly running Helldivers 2 at the moment, but Cyberpunk also goes really well as a reference.

Im in my 30s. I dont know what suits a 27 year old sorry. Let me know if you need a pc for a 37 year old

  • +3

If I did not build my own PCs (very basic) I would probably look at the Techfast deals posed here. They seem to be good bang-for-buck. Will be a good starting point for what you get for $2k these days.

If it helps, I just went through my 6 month check for price changes for a motherboard/cpu/ram/ssd upgrade I bought on 28 degrees card (ie, I lodged claims for price protection for the items that had changed in price).

I got back 10$ on motherboard, 55$ on the cpu. I could have made a single dollar on the ram and the SSD was like 40-50 more expensive.

  • Additional question, Any thoughts on a reasonable amount to spend on a computer to run Call Of Duty (is $2,000 enough)? Obviously I'll get a nicer computer for $2.5k but just assessing what everyone thinks (at what price point do you get best bang for buck).

depends on your age and other lifestyle factors

    • +1

I reckon around $1.5k should be fine, but obv if you are comfortable spending $2k, go for it. It will (should) be more future-proof and will probably get somewhat better framerates, graphics level, etc.

    • Pre-built $2K PC will handle Black Ops 6 more than fine.

    Whatโ€™s life like at a 27YO?

    • +1

Ahh to be 27 again, sadly here at 37 lol

      • I'm 45, tired and my back hurts.

This title sounds like what people use on Reddit that there is a need to identify themselves with an age. Most Americans do this.

A PS5 will play COD perfectly and can plug in keyboard and mouse.

    Hopefully OP ain't a musician

  • Techfast

  • Any reason a used 2080Ti in a desktop with a modern CPU wouldn't absolutely crush your requirements?

    • +5

Those specs are only good until you're 26.

  • Nebula got your new $2k deal ready: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/876360
