I almost thought it's something to heat your bum on the couch during winter.

    • +19

Whenever I just plant my bum on the couch it seems to grow bigger, so you could be on to something.

    • +12

Well, it’ll heat your seeds either way.

Thanks just bought one, should be great for home brew.

    • My exact thoughts

    • Ehhhh, personally I prefer heat belts.
No heating of the trub/yeast bed and more centralised on your fermenter so more even heating

      • I would have thought the heat would just spread throughout the liquid and trub with a belt or pad, interesting if it is more centralised with a belt…

      • +2

You're thinking about it wrong. I plan on wrapping it around the fermenter so its far more even heating than a belt. And it has an inbuilt thermo, so frees up a my controller for other jobs.

  • Wow that’s very cheap!

  • Thanks OP. Would you say it's quite simple to use? My 70yo dad is a keen gardener but not great with technology

    • Very simple. Just set temperature, place seedling trays on top and water as required.

Warning - this product is misleading.

I bought it a couple months ago thinking the thermostat function was an external one you placed in the soil for a proper temperature control feedback (as it says 'real temp').

However it's only a thermostat that sits on the mat. Which to me is less useful as it doesn't actually tell you how warm the seeds soil is, adding to further guessing and constantly changing the temperature set point.

If you don't need this function then it is a decent buy.

        • Sorry where does it say it has an external thermostat?

  • Will this work for heating mobile/tablet device screen to seperate the screen from frame?

    • +2

Doubt it very much as temp up to 50c. Better to put in car and leave it closed for 10 minutes :). Honestly not sure how much heat needed for that.

    • Just use a hot/cold pack heated up. That's what IFixIt uses in their kits. Not too hot though.

  • How much $ do these things normally go for??

I have no use but could be a good Christmas gift for my father…

    Thx

Looks perfect for raising dough. Ordered one, thank you!

    • The reason why i got it too!

    • i raise dough in oven with just the light on …seems to create enough warmth.

Yeah, I'm a bit fussy when it comes to the temperature for my sourdough. 4 different steps, all with different temperatures to support the different microorganisms (not just yeast).

So far I've used one of those reptile heating mats, and an external temperature controller. $23 to get 'all in one' makes for a much neater setup.

          mmmm 4-step sourdough *drool

I don't need one, but I think it's a good deal. I already have 3 grow mats from no name brands on ebay, similar price but probably not 'inkbird quality'.
In case you're wondering, I indoor grow chillies but it would be helpful for germinating other plants too

  • How does this compare to ones you get off AliExpress? Cheaper and looks equivalent with good reviews: https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005005551926031.html

    • one has a thermostat the other one just straight heat you'll need something to switch it on and off

…and use this to start your seed with…
    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07HHR5DGN?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_f…

prob the best seed raising starting tray i used. Really good as you get an extender with it so you can start growing your owntaller veggies like peas, tomatoes etc

    • Use the mat inside or under the bottom tray?

      • Under the tray. Always.

    • I got this from Aliexpress really cheap, very similar design and yeah they work great!

      • Could you share the link?

        • It won't let me shsre the link, but search Seed Starter Tray and you will find a few

    • What are the benefits of the propagator say compared to a clear plastic tub that you can purchase from one of the cheap shops? I can see it has air vents, but how important are these?

      • If you want to use a fan to move the plants about, this will be of value to you.

      • this is way higher/taller than any of the cheap ones. More height means you can grow taller plant seedlings as well as the clear perspex(?) is of really good quality. Not a sh?tty thin plastic. With the vents you can adjust the humidity inside its a natural small growth house not just a bucket with a plastic over the top

      • Important with clones, because you want the vents closed and humidity high so they take root. Then you slowly open the vents to help lower humidity and harden them off before transplanting to soil.

    • Got any YouTube channel recommendations for a beginner? I.e. what equipment to start with, how to get the basics down for someone keen but clueless?

  • If anyone plans on using this for animals/critters, be mindful that most will dig to get away from heat, so dont put the mat under the enclosure like their example shows.

    • +1

The trick is to orient it so only one end of the enclosure is heated, then the animals can find an appropriate place along the temperature gradient from there. For burrowing inverts etc., you can do the moisture gradient the other way

    • Seems like the perfect cat mat if you can run it under 50 degrees

  • They have multi-mat sets too, cheaper per unit if you want more mats connected to single thermostat

Edit: only 2-mat set still in stock, $39.99

  • I came here looking for a birdseed mat.

  • is this good for filaments? 3D printer. add a fan and some gel, an active dry box?

    • It could, but the max temp (50c) would limit the filament types you could dry.

  • These would be great quality.
Here’s my homebrew setup if anyone is interested. I currently use cheap heating mats I bought years ago to wrap around my fermenters, then I use the Ink Bird temperature device ITC-308, plugged into the mats, with it’s sensor taped to the outside of the fermenter so it gets a reading of the liquid temperature and regulates the temperature to keep it at 20 degrees. I only brew in winter when the garage temp is lower than 20 degrees as I haven’t found the time it space to install a fridge for the fermenters during the warmer months.

  • Wrong size for common big seedling trays.
