Do The Cistern Toilet Blocks Cause Trouble for The Seal Gap in The Toilet?

So I bought some toilet blocks that go in the back in the cistern so when you flush it has a nice blue liquid that goes with the flush automatically

https://www.coles.com.au/product/harpic-foaming-blue-block-t…

https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/32112/harp…

these two the usual blue blocks they say they last about 200 flushes or roughly 4 weeks

so plumbers and i guess people who have used these cistern blocks in the past do they cause any problems for the toilet I should know about or is my housemate just old and outdated on this product and maybe they fixed the leaking issue it causes on some leak stop gaps in the toilet

what does ozbargain think of this product

Yes, can confirm that if you get splashed with that blue water it can cause issues with your seal.

Lucky i drive an Atto 3.

      • When those pouch cell tops pop, you are going to run 3 times as fast?

9 out of 10 seals who've tried them end up with the blues

no they dont have any hard corrosive in them
its literally bleach, frangance, blue colour and chorine
none of them are going to eat away at silicon around the bottom of the toilet

    • my housemates argument was not that it would corrode the seal but rather build up around it and mess with the tight gap that they normally make thus causing the seal to not seal as good say without the build up of the blue liquid on the seal..

tl;dr he says the blue liquid will create a gap or build up on the seal and thus a small tiny leak over time.. is this true?

        tldr: no

        • that is what i am thinking otherwise why would they still sell this shit if it causes issues still

@AlienC: if its leaking onto the floor, your toilet is probably not installed correctly

            • @Wiadro: yeah thankfully we not there yet but maybe if i sit on it a few more times and cough

      • You might find the first few toilet blus you use will dislodge a lot of crud that has built up over the years.

        • I guess that is kind of good yes?

Especially for one of the more filthy toilets.

          • @AlienC: I guess. But proves to me it actually is cleaning something in between the cistern and the top of the bowl, probably both. Like a big tank of water sitting there for years on end, even if the water coming in is clean, why would you expect the tank to be if you never actually clean it. The blue colour is a good indicator for when it's ran out and needs replacing, otherwise yeah clear tablets would be nice but you wouldn't be able to tell when it needs replacing.

Seals are fine but you’re gonna get the blues

Blue water doesn't fully hide skid marks. Just get a better brush that encourages loo user courtesy; like this one

I've never understood why people would want blue water in their toilet. Nothing looks as clean as clear water, and it matches every decor. Leaky toilets that have blue streaks running down the inside of the bowl are extra ugly.

      • I visited someone's house recently and they had a red one. I got a shock when I opened the lid as I thought the toilet was full of blood

          Halloween?

      • Blue toilet water represents bourgeois aspirations.

I'm sure Kath & Kim had these.

        • Noice things make you feel effluent

  • Are you asking because you used one and it's leaking now?

    • No no leaks so far this is first time using it.

Asking to see if anyone has noticed the blocks causing any damage like affecting the leak seal or any other detrimental effects to the toilet.

      • I've been using them for ages, not all the time though and no leaks so far

        • I am kinda curious honestly what will happen if I keep using them. Morbid curiosity.

  • +1

I'm more concern on how much you pay for those.

    • These were just test ones I think they were $1 per block but the harpic was more like $2 per block

  • +2

The blue blocks are going to show up existing leaks that may not be visible when the water is clear. That may make the flatmate think that the blue block causes leaks.

    • I guess good to know then maybe in the long run

  • I miss them times when you could buy an entire toilet suite with flushbox for $83 on your power pass.
Looking after some rental properties I used to swap them over in under 30 minutes and no tenant had ever complained having to sit on a cheap throne.
I never understand as to why you want blue water.
Give it a weekly clean with the usual duck.

    • If you saw some of these toilets you would try everything too.

I have done all of the above everything except replace the entire toilet so far.

I think I just have to believe I am left to exist with this cursed toilet.

Not even some of the ones I have seen in the schools were this bad.

It also has a special ability to reflect piss at the user. Truly one of the most cursed toilets I have encountered in my life.

But honestly I was just bored lazy and tired and thought to try these block things and if they are good maybe try them at work. So this is kind of a trial run just to pass time I guess you could say.. I really don't know lol kill me please

      • I grew up in half a duplex initially built for social housing. The house was built in 1950 and had a German invented shelf toilet. You pooped onto a surface, the idea was so you could self check for worms. To flush you had a large handle on a ball valve with 1.5" pipe connection. Now that was so powerful and if done right was pretty much self cleaning. Eventually mum had it replaced with cheap standard suite. Change was hard, them things would splash back and when such blue blocks were used, blue water would splash back at your bottom. Overall I like traditional American cans, 3" drain that makes w whirlpool and never splashes you.
