Western Digital 8TB Wd Purple Surveillance Internal Hard Drive Hdd - 7200 Rpm, Sata 6 Gb/S, 256 Mb Cache, 3.5 Inches

Purple™ drives are engineered specifically for surveillance to help withstand the elevated heat fluctuations and equipment vibrations within NVR environments. An average desktop drive is built to run for only short intervals, not the harsh 24/7 always-on environment of a high-definition surveillance system. With WD Purple, you get reliable, surveillance-class storage that’s tested for compatibility in a wide range of security systems, and some of our latest models (WD22PURZ, WD42PURZ, and WD63PURZ) have improved power efficiency. Exclusive AllFrame™ technology helps reduce frame loss and improve overall video playback.

Just a note that the Amazon listing you referred to is the Pro variant which comes with a 5 year manufactures warranty rather than 3. I think its also rated for more drive writes.

    • Good catch, removed it.

They're the same price because they're the same entity. The listed ABN for both devicedeal and QnapShop are the same; comes back to OZZIE SOLUTIONS PTY. LTD.

    • That’s a good price for those drives - have you used these guys before?

Yes. Many many people have on OzBargain they have been around for ages and are quite reputable.

There is a lot of uncertainty if the drives themselves are actually new as they tend to be 3-5 year old models. It is possible to reset the firmware so that the counters return to zero, meaning there is no way to verify their prior usage and tell old stock from new stock. Data centres often pull drives early to avoid age-related failures so that is a likely source.

The drives are 'bulk' when means they are supplied with minimal packaging and no manufacturer warranty (however East Digital provides their own warranty and their shipping and packaging is excellent).

Having said all that, the drives themselves are great. I've never had a problem. When problems do occur East Digital always honours their warranty. East Digital also sells drives that are clearly marked as "Refurbished" so that adds credibility that the drives sold as new, are in fact, new.

As "Enterprise drives" people often complain that they are particularly noisy. So that's something to be aware of.

Honestly, I think they offer good value and they pricing is fair.
