Nothing on my Elevate Amex or Velocity Escape Amex cards. Have used the Elevate card to pay for PT before but prefer using my Opal card

  • I guess people from interstate will receive this offer lol. Nothing on my edge / explorer.

Got it on my Qantas Discovery.

  • Got it on one my reserve cards

  • +1

Very interested to know if this applies also to the airport line station access fees. Might even make Central to Domestic competitive with Didi.

    • Good question.

Those T&Cs imply that this offer is to encourage use of the Credit Card itself, to tap & pay, instead of paying with the Opal card.

So, by that assumption, going to the Airport should get you that cashback, but the $5 cashback is spends of $20 and more (for a maximum of 3 times).

    • It should work. As long as the amount is charged to Amex card

    • +1

      Confirmed working.

  • nothing on Explorer :(

  • Got this on my Qantas ultimate

  • Upto 3 times means $20 x3 =$5 ×3 cashback?

    • +1

Yes. You have to send $20 3 times (in one or more transactions)

      • -1

Since there is a daily $18.70 cap, no one will ever spend $20 in one transaction. This part confused me.

        • You don’t have to spend $20 in one transaction. You can achieve the $20 spend in one or more transactions until the deal expiry date

  • No wonder i didn't receive it on my AMEX Gold. As i use that card all the time for transport.

    • yeah same sucky didnt come up on my amex explorer

    • -1

How does using Amex card for opal compared to opal card itself? I find using my bank or credit cards on transport I tend to be overcharged more and have to appeal for refunds.

      • Have you ever used a bank/credit cards for Opal? As far as I know, it charges the exact same, with the same caps.

What do you mean by "overcharged more"?

        • I think what they mean issues that it doesn't tap off correctly and you end up getting hit with the default fare. One of the reasons why I still use a physical Opal card

          • @kerfuffle: Ah, I see.

I don't think that's been an issue for me, but good to know about, will keep an eye out.

  • Got it on my Amex Explorer. Wonder if it works if I top up my Opal card using the Amex?

    • I doubt it. But feel free to try and let us know

    • Excludes Opal card top-ups or any purchases of saver fares, vouchers or passes via the Opal website and app.

      • -3

Phrasing is open to interpretation. If all Opal card top-up methods are excluded (options are online, in-app, and at ticket machines at stations), they should put a comma after “Excludes Opal card top-ups”. It could be interpreted that you will qualify for the credit if you top up at a station.

      • Yep I read it says Opal website and app. Might try it at a train station to see if it manages to work :)

        • Have you tried to top up at a station?

          • +1

@roughana: I topped up $20 using a kiosk at a station on 4/11/24 but I still haven’t seen any cashback. The transaction appears as “TransportNSW S811007 Beaconsfield”.

            • @DJSmelly: Amex used to send an email when the spend criteria were met. Did you receive that email? Let us know how you go with the transaction. Thanks.

              • +2

@pinnacle: No email but I haven’t been receiving confirmation emails for a while now.

            • @DJSmelly: have you received the cashback now?

  • nothing on platinum

  • Yesterday(31/10) was the first time I used plat edge instead of opal.. hoping that the transaction comes up as 01/11 making it eligible for the cashback

  • How do you spend $20 in one transaction on travel in NSW on the Opal network?

    • +2

They didn't say must be one transaction.

    • +2

I assume as long as smaller trips all add up to over $60, you should get the 3 x $5 back

      • +2

But keep in mind, once you reach $20, they won’t carry forward the spend over $20 to the next $20 spend. For example, if you travel 3 times during peak hours from Parramatta to Chatswood, the cost would be $24.09. Then you will get the $5 cashback. But the excess $4.09 spend would not carry forward. And you need to do another set of transactions to reach $20.

  • Wonder if it'll work for topping up via one of the station machines… T&C's state top up via website or app isn't eligible but nothing about the kiosks 🤔

    • +1

Top-up $20 and let us know. If the merchant is NSW Transport then I think should be OK . That what I got on my CC transaction.

      • +1

Doesn't look like it unfortunately. I tried topping up from the opal machine, it's showing up in my transactions as Opal Machine. Haven't received the usual email notification let's see what happens

  • Don't have this offer sadly. I live in NSW but use an opal card rather than payment cards to travel.

  • Got it on my Platinum Edge (never used it for TfNSW journeys). I live in Sydney.

  • Not on my explorer.

Haven’t had a descent offer from Amex in over a year. Whoever is in charge of organising these offers needs to be moved on. Maybe we need a way of providing them feedback so they can get real with these offers eg. I am not at all interested in spending $2,500 at Peloton!

    • +2

I'm swear they must bought shares in Dropbox. Always see it in the offers list.

  • +1

Damn, I never use my Amex on PT but I didn't get this offer.

All the Amex offers I have recieved in the past month or so have been useless. Lots of offers for wine purchases requiring a high spend, or hotels.

  • +2

for those that don't register their card to the opal account, keep in mind you may not be able to exit station car parks with the boom gates without paying the $30 parking fee

  • +1

Confirmed working on my QANTAS Ultimate Card.

It’s not required to spend $20 in one transaction; it took me three separate days of spending about $9, $8, and $9 again across train, metro and ferry. The $5 credit appeared about two days after the last one.

NB I normally use an OPAL card and top-up using the AMEX - this deal doesn’t work for that, it’s specifically for tapping on/off using the card.

    • Thank you. I have added this in the original post.

  • Does anyone know the additional $5 gets credited after subsequent additional $20 purchases after the first one? Coz it's taking a while

    • I have received a total of three credits after spending lots over a few weeks.
