Chinese Medium Hybrid SUV Battle

The medium SUV hybrid category. Is there a clear value proposition amongst the Chinese brands right now, or is it splitting hairs? What would be your pick of the base hybrid, no-extras models based on best bang for buck?

              @Speckled Jim: I don't know what you're on about.

If Russia annexed Australia and then subsequently attacked Ukraine, does that make us (along with Russia) enemies of Ukraine?

              Anyways…

@Speckled Jim: It seems you are struggling to read part of his comment. Perhaps there was an issue loading the page. It says:

"Korea" was never an "enemy" of Australia, unless you mean North Korea during the Korean War.

While Korea was annexed by Japan, they had no autonomy / drafted to fight for the Japanese etc.

                  Hope that helps!

                  • -2

@Minimum chips: War was waged in Korea in the early 50s, followed by partition and a period of rebuilding.
That has borne a huge manufacturing capacity. Keep denying it.

    • Neg away. Remember this when the engine in your “bargain” shitheap blows up at 25k kms!

  • +2

Oh, I tell you, and it's off topic, but looking to upgrade the wife's car soon to EV and was tossing up giving her my Atto 3 and getting the Sea Lion… then the Shark dropped last night… and holy fudging fudge knuckles, Batman, that is a VERY good price for a PHEV vehicle. Less than $62k onroad in NSW. It's only $6k more for the Shark over the top of the range Sea Lion.

Gonna get me a big ute so I too can park like an arsehole and drive up people's rear bumpers while im out and about… Grrr, fear me in my almost silent truck as I park in EV charging bays but still allowed to plug in and charge.

    • I think it will sell very well.

Can't wait for the Sharks to start tailgating genuinely fast cars.

Crazy times when a Chinese ute has 321kW and 650Nm

To put that in perspective the current WRX will have to abuse their gearboxes to try and keep up with one.

    Among these 3, the BYD.

    • -1

Most schools now have a BYD program.

      • Yet zero have a BYJV program.

  • -3

Hybrids are useless as a bargain under 80,000km.
No spare, less boot, more dead weight, more expenses, more complexity.
Given the global auto overproduction, the 80kk figure could stretch to over 100kk.

  • +4

Be aware on the BYD, especially atto3. ENCAP just reassessed its driver assistance systems and ranked it as “not recommended” for highways.

It didn’t stop for pedestrians, incorrectly detected signs, 0/25 for driver monitoring etc.

If this software component is common to their other vehicles then they shouldn’t be on the road!

Xi wants more Australians to die before he sends his troops!

      • +1

It would be pretty trivial to program in incidents to happen "at random" during a wartime scenario… If you own a Chinese car that has remote access, Just be aware the manufacturers have zero control of their company if the government starts directing their automotive industry against its customers if they chose to do so. The CCP has final control of everything over there, execs go straight to jail or disappear if they try to resist.

    • +2

Maybe im old school, but i dont like to rely onnthis stuff anyway - for orecisely the reasons outlined. At this point, im a much more reliable collision avoidance system. IMO having these half hearted systems just makes drivers lazy and gives them more oplotunity to get distracted becasue "the car will do it for me"

      • +1

There's an awful cycle to it too, where they make the cars bigger and harder to use without the systems, which in turn makes people rely on the systems even more.

I drove our friends' Nissan SUV for a few days. The sight lines in that thing are appalling, so you have to rely on the 360 camera to park and blind spot detection. They wouldn't sell a single one after a test drive if it didn't have those.

        Very annoying car.

The Sea Lion 7 is being released shortly. Might be worth waiting to see what the price is, and whether it impacts the price of Sea Lion 6 (both new and demo). They won't want to cannibalise their 6 sales but it will be interesting to see what happens.

    • I know what you mean since they both are med sized SUV. However, SL6 is a PHEV and SL7 is a full EV so they're technically different types of vehicles. SL6 is for ppl who do not want to go full EV yet but want to save up gas money for shorter distances.

    • A new model of any car would negatively impact the superseded model.

  • +3

Recently bought a SUV myself… parents in law did not want me to get a Chinese EV/Hybrid… and they're Chinese! (my father in law drives a Mazda over there)

As such, I went for the tried and tested Toyota Rav4. Reliable and good resale value here.

    • Your in laws know the deal…. some of the EV stories over there are horrendous. Hopefully they are more fastidious with their QC for exports to OZ

    • So your parents couldnt afford a Merc or BMW? Just because they wanted you to avoid a chinese vehicle doesnt mean all chinese cars are complete rubbish. Theres a range of cars, and i gather that aussie delivered chinese cars are a mid range product for china.

There are a lot of factors, and what i gather from some other cultures appearing affluent is a big factor in deciding a car. Ie Don't get chinese because youll appear to be not wealthy enough.

    • Interesting as mazda has about a 0.4% market share in China by sales volume.

RAV4 is also being discounted by 40% over in China too, i wonder what would he think of that?

    • your parents in law wouldn't happen to be rich would they?

  • +2

If I have a choice I'd rather give my money to South Korea over China. I Don't trust them.

    • +4

I dont get this. Didnt a bunch of car makers gt outwd for comlecting lots of data just recently? They weren't all chinese, and some of the trusted players were collecting a lot of stuff. It's not just China scraping your data. They've just been given the media treatment to be a bogey man.

      • financially lots of vested interest with big money in the anti-chinese EV crusade by industries, politically US led West has been trying to contain the China threat for over a decade. the media is only one of the many tools they use so it's not a surprise really

    • South Korea / Japan / anyone else really… Liberal democracies.

    • Lmao don't trust who? the factory workers building cars?
Do you trust the australian govt? everyone is so scared

      • Don't trust those dodgy Chinese, they'll find out who you are and then come troll on OzB lol

    • I think you mean North Korea.

Who knows China manufacturers cutting corners. It's a known fact many have safety issues or battery problems. Even BYD had faulty batteries before on Tesla. Upon small impact can explode.

Also people keep thinking EVs are environmental friendly however I have yet to see how EV batteries recycling and proper disposal to convince me otherwise

      • Are you talking about Takata Airbags? Lol

  • Cannot fathom how any educated person would buy any of these chinese vehicles. If you value quantity over quality then i guess thats who would buy this garbage. These guys are the temu of the automotive world.

    • +1

It's not even the quality for me… It's more morals and what countries I trust more.

      • +1

I was going to write a long rant response, but you're correct. We all need to start paying a lot more attention to what the CCP are doing with their influence operations and what they are saying about democracies to their own people. The brainwashing shit they teach their kids about the Japanese in primary school is disgusting. China is not our friend. While the CCP are in control, we should all be concerned about what our money is supporting. Yes, nearly everything is made in china, but there are other options out there for a lot of stuff, we don't have to live like monks in the mountains, just do a little extra research on what we buy before defaulting to Chinese goods..

        • +1

as opposed to the Japanese curriculum trying to write their WW2 war crimes out of history you mean?

          • @May4th: Both suck with their education. But at least one is a liberal democracy like us, as opposed to a autocracy aligned with Russia Iran and North Korea, trying to change the world order.

The other (South Korea) is also a liberal democracy, AND wasn't involved in war crimes (rather a victim of Japan in WW2).

    • What cars are you suggesting?

      • AU Ford Falcon with the aussie built windsor V8.

Let's ignore that Ford (and Holden) are have US parents.

    • Not an evangelist for these cars, but they're not any worse than the other crap that's been sold here over the years.

These Chinese companies are in their trying-to-break in phase and have to offer their best, while the surviving traditional players are happy to take Australian consumers for granted.

If you have a limited amount of money and want to make it go far, they're a decent proposition. A better effort than early Korean cars were, or the last Holdens.

    • +1

Cannot fathom how any educated person would buy any of these chinese vehicles.

      how ironic

    • I can understand it.

      Cheap
      New
      Faux luxury (showroom appeal)
      Long warranty

  • -1

BYD Sea Lion looks the goods honestly, sat in a few Haval ubers and I was pretty impressed. Much better than I thought

  • I have an LDV/MG, they're alright, nothing special. The 10 year warranty though sounds alright

The Haval H6 would be the best value for money, if you have more cash the BYD Sealion.

    MG isn't bad, just dated.

  • Get a better job so you dont have to settle for these rubbish options.

  • I think something else needs to be pointed out here. The HS PHEV can be had for an absolute STEAL at the moment. In that context, it’s probably the best “value” car of the list. I saw a demo one in a dealership recently for $26k. It had like 300km on it.

    • They're being run-out with a new model due next year; $10–12K price drop.

      • I know that - the new HS is already out, albeit not in PHEV variant. I think you missed the crux of what I was trying to say, which was that whether it’s a new/outgoing model, it’s half the price of the other options. Ergo, best “value” car on the list.

Just for clarity, I wouldn’t have any of them.

        • I wasn't evaluating your comment, just adding the context you appear to have omitted.

          • @sumyungguy: Thanks sassy! Silly me for assuming OP knew what cars they had shortlisted.

  • Haval H6 Ultra hybrid all the way

  • Tesla Y

Hey its made in Shanghai ! LOL

  • +2

    None of these. Horrible cars.

    • +1

But you forget this is ozbargain, home of the tight arse.

      • I wonder if it's a false economy. What you save upfront is lost in depreciation.

      • A bargain means you get good bang for buck.

Chinese landfill vehicles don't really meet that. They're basically the new Daewoo or Holden Cruze.

        • Most npc's out there just view a car as a 'car' and as long as it has a few seats, wheels and a body, it will do the job.

  • Not sure about the PHEVs but ive been researching thr full electric MPVs. The Denza D9 and Zeekr 009 might just be too cheap to ignore.

    • is it cheap? looks like it's going to be over 100k when they arrive. zeekr pushing 140

      • I doubt it will be 140K. Zeekr's problem is the same for most Chinese makers - brand recognition. They will need to be competitive to get going. Zeekr is launching with a dealer network model so i expect pricing to be negotiable and that dealer network is the one that Geely has setup here (think volvo). When i registered interest i got a call from an agent working out of a local Volvo dealership and they asked me about pricing etc. If the LDV is 64K, the Alphard around 90K (via business imports), i dont think they will sell at more than 120K. For reference, the China model which uses a 800kwh architecture is going for 588000 RMB in China, while the overseas model in Malaysia which uses a 400Kwh architecture is going for about 370000 MYR. Both takes you to about 120K AUD. With a bit of negotiating you should be able to get it for cheaper. Another benchmark is the Kia EV9 which is usually about 110K AUD driveaway. If Zeekr wants a good launch, they might be willing to get it down to the EV FBT base. If they do that, they can have my money yesterday.

        • I hope so.. the LDV MIFA EV is 100k so not optimistic MPV will be cheap enough for the masses as it's more niche. zeekr X is 70k which is on par with Volvo EX30 (although a bit smaller) so expecting it around the 120k range which might still be good value but a bit out of my budget

  • Noone mentioned or poll does not have Zeekr which comes from Geely!?

    • not a hybrid

      • Pure electric no good? Why hybrid

        • not sure OP seems set on PHEV. I'd prefer pure BEV too

  • I thought the sealion was a big SUV and given that it's a plug in Hybrid, it's the best of both worlds with the ability to drive most trips in battery and have the option of petrol for anyone who need it?

    Clear winner imo

    • hm article removed, is it another EV exploding scaremongering article?

  • -3

When you have EV brands like Mercedes with car catching on fire, I can just imagine all these people sleeping while their Made in Chine EV are charging down below waiting to catch on fire.

Unless you have been living under a rocket all of this time, Chinese EVs are notorious for catching on fire, far worse more than EU brands.
Make sure your house insurance covers fire caused by EV, it is not a matter of time but when that will happen.

    • -1

Chinese EVs are notorious for catching on fire, far worse more than EU brands.

source? other than youtube videos and trash news articles that is

the chinese EVs here actually has a safer battery tech than the Mercedes EQE that was on the news recently (LFP / blade battery which has lesser risk of thermal runway vs lithium ion/ NMC of the Merc) if you care about the facts

      • You'll be waiting a while, he probably heard it from his uncle who heard it from his mate, who was passed this secret squirrel message at the pub on the piss

    • If you're living under a rocket you have bigger problems than an EV catching fire

    • -1

      Careful, your ignorance is showing

  • Mitsubishis PEHV suv's are now half price in central Europe.
More to come. Audi technically bankrupt, perpetual tears at Volkswagen.
