Black T-shirts - Durable material for everyday use

I've been considering a wardrobe switch to mainly black T-shirts and polos, and I'm finally ready to buy after a recent closet clean-out. I’m looking for quality over quantity—something durable and well-made without breaking the bank. Can anyone recommend brands, apart from Uniqlo (quality has gone down recently), with solid black T-shirts under $50 each (can stretch a bit higher if needed)? I plan to buy around six, so I'm hoping for options with long-lasting material and a good fit (I’m typically a medium in most brands).

Thanks in advance!

I've been using the industrie ones lately (from Myer), $35 currently, seem to decent quality and holding up well.

Think they were 20% off when I bought them.

Anything 100% Cotton is much better than Polyester-cotton.
      So always check the label

50 dollars for a t-shirt, that's just some ignorant bitch shit
I call that getting swindled and pimped, shit
I call that getting tricked by a business, that shirt's hella dough

    • Man you hella won’t

And having the same one as six other people in this club is a hella don't

AS Colour. I've bought 10 varying colours that i wear to work daily and some of them are 50+ washes in and still look good.

They're pricey but if you buy 5 there is usually a discount year round. Likely to be some kind of discount for Black Friday next month

Get the classic tees minimum, don't be tempted by the cheaper varieties.

        • Yeah Classic is my fav now. I used to wear Staple all the time, wish I had tried out classic earlier. For me it's great fit and just the right kind of weight.

That said I have a single black staple shirt from 2018 that is still going strong where most others have died.

Another vote for AS Colour, but only for the Classic, the Staple t-shirts are nowhere near as good

Just be wary that their shirts can vary in size quite a bit. Ordered 10 XL shirts last time and almost all of them differ in length, width and sleeze length - some quite considerably.

      • Indeed, try before you buy if you can. They have a few stores around.

I like to use their 5 items for 25% off, didn't have much issue returning/swapping.

Been happy with the Uniqlo ‘ 100% SUPIMA Cotton Crew Neck T-Shirt’

    Currently on sale for $19

I previously was wearing wayver brand which I was paying like $28 a shirt but the material is super thin in comparison and doesn’t hold shape as well.

  • Still wearing Uniqlo supima cottons. AS colour would be my next recommendation.

  • Came here to recommend uniqlo too

  • I got a multipack Fruit of the Loom black Ts from Amazon and they're great.

$50 will get you 3 to 6 shirts.

In the topic of Amazon, I tried the gildan 6 shirt pack as some people here said they were great , think I got it for about $35 on special, and they are by far the most trash tshirts I’ve ever tried. May as well go kmart $4.50 ones which I used to just get a few new ones every 2 or so months.

      • +3

Yep have them too. Just use them for sleeping as they're not outside quality.

I buy Hanes beefy tees, as they are quite a bit heavier and don't shrink, but don't feel like wearing a weighted jacket. They come in 2 packs on Amazon for about $30, I picked them up on sale last time for $22 for 2. - https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B00JUM6ZK8 - I really like their white ones as well because a heavier white tshirt doesn't make me feel naked like a super light white tshirt does.

Pricing varies wildly on Amazon though depending on size, colour and stages of the moon.

  • I have recently started using Threadless shirts (online store) and they seem really nice quality. Can pick up about 5 of them for around $130-180 depending if you have a discount code

Edit: read this as Threadheads instead of Threadless!

I’ve got a couple of shirts from Threadheads which are good quality - they’ve got a sale starting on 31st Oct

      • Doh! I meant Threadheads!

  • Fruit of the Loom is pretty good. Collar doesn't stretch and it fits well.

Ask the JB Hi salesperson. Seems to be standard uniform there.

You can try Unison (formerly French Connection). Wayver are also good

    • Haven't tried Unison but French Connection are/were pretty good quality wise.

  • $3-4 anko brand, kmart end of season clean out.

I have a strict heirarchy - each year mine go down a rung from casual shirts > workout/dog park shirts > dirty job shirts > and finally to shed rags

works a treat - and do remember noone gives a flying fig about the label at the back of your neck and all black tshirts look the same unitl they pill/stretch/develop holes

    • Is the material thin or thick?

    • +1

Material weight effects the drape of a shirt. Thin tees will be less flattering if you're not ripped.

      • +1

        it's $3-4

all black tshirts look the same unitl they pill/stretch/develop holes

          I was responding to this

I’ve been exclusively wearing Etiko black Ts for the last 8 or so years and I really rate them, upset the got rid of the V-Neck tho.

    You can usually pick up a bundle with 3 for $125, but free shipping doesn’t kick in until $150. Quite generous sizes, although I fear I have now grown into their XXL as opposed to it being baggy on me :;

I'm a big fan of Sugarcane Whitesville shirts, in general. The black ones have more pronounced stitching which you may or may not like. I love their white shirts, personally.

They feel amazing, and are made in Japan. They are not heavy weight, if that's a problem. I like lighter feeling materials.
Also at $55 each (without shipping) it's a stretch. I buy mine when I go to Japan at half the price.

Size up, maybe even two sizes, as they will shrink after washing, and are Japanese sizing. I buy XL which wears closer to a Medium/Large.

Someone else said AS Colour, which is also a good option for something easier to find locally, and more affordable. They are made in Bangladesh, but are fairly transparent about their social responsibility. That matters to me, it may not to you (though it should).

Good on you for moving toward a capsule wardrobe, and prioritising quality over quantity. Ozbargain could learn a lot from you.

Have you tried Bronson tees yet? I'm keen to hear how they stack up against the Whitesville.

      • +1

I haven’t! They definitely look quality, though I’m not sure I love the seams. One thing I appreciate about Whitesville is the tubular construction.

        • +1

Yerah I don't really notice them and they do hold a really good shape. Gotta give the Whitesville a go at some point though but I'm holding out the try the slub cotton tees from Bronson first.

        • +1

Actually the Bronson tee only has the shoulder seams, same as the Whitesville. The difference is Whitesville is loopwheel while Bronson is just tubular.

Apparently loopwheel is more breathable and has a better drape but is more prone to streching than tubular - https://www.goodwear.com/en-au/blogs/news/loopwheel-vs-tubul…

Consider going with heather tees?. They show wear less than black or white tees and go with more outfits. I LOVE the Los Angeles apparel Yukon army shirt. Reallly heavy but super comfortable and flattering. They hold up really well, don't go out of shape. I have had one shirt start to develop flea bites on the collar and sleeves but it's been washed weekly since I bought it back in July '22 so not bad considering.

try UNIQLO U - very good material and lasts long

  • Kmart anko - $4.50, been using them for years and each shirt lasts at least a year

  • Kmart but the $8 Aussie cotton ones
