Max Payne

Max Payne is a man with nothing to lose in the violent, cold urban night. A fugitive undercover cop framed for murder, hunted by cops and the mob, Max is a man with his back against the wall, fighting a battle he cannot hope to win. Max Payne is a relentless story-driven game about a man on the edge, fighting to clear his name while struggling to uncover the truth about his slain family amongst a myriad of plot-twists and twisted thugs in the gritty bowels of New York during the century's worst blizzard.

The groundbreaking original cinematic action-shooter, Max Payne introduced the concept of Bullet Time® in videogames. Through its stylish slow-motion gunplay combined with a dark and twisted story, Max Payne redefined the action-shooter genre.

Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne

Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne is a violent, film-noir love story. Dark, tragic and intense, the in-depth story is a thrill-ride of shocking twists and revelations.

His life in ruins, Max Payne finds himself back in the NYPD. During a routine murder investigation he runs into Mona Sax, a woman he thought dead, a femme fatale murder suspect. She holds the keys to the questions that haunt him. But nothing is simple in the dark and tragic night of New York City. An army of underworld thugs stands between Max and the answers he seeks. His journey deeper into his own personal hell continues.

Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne delivers an intense gameplay experience. It features fierce, yet stylish action sequences and the slow-motion gunplay that has become synonymous with the Max Payne series.

Max Payne 3 is also $8.98 (but it's a Rockstar key).

Hmm why is the first game 40% more expensive than the 2nd?

    • +2

No idea but it's the better of the two and arguably the best of the entire series. The bullet-time shooting mechanics still hold up so well to this day. It can be a bit brutal on the harder difficulties like a lot of shooters from that era though.

      • Not sure I'd say it's better than the 2nd. On Metacritic they're both rated almost the same, and on Steam the 2nd game is rated higher.

    • The first game is better

    • First one is better and story stuck like a "green crack through my brain".

    • Steam doesn't sell the first one in some regions eg. Australia. GOG doesn't sell any of them. I guess Humble figure people will pay a bit more for the first one because it's harder to find.

These games are being remade right now, so better grab them before they get delisted forever.

Mo people (going to buy it), mo money.

Finally finished Max Payne 1 via BC on Xbox a month or so ago after nearly 20 odd years with the game in my stack, got close countless times and then you lose your memory card or swap consoles or fire up the phone version from like a dozen years ago, finally finished the damn thing is the point,

And now I can play number 2 on the Deck too. Had it on PS2 years ago but never touched it because I never finished the first one.

Moral of the story: I take ages to finish shit, and cheers OP!

I remember getting stuck on those dream sequences.

Nice work, it was a pain on console compared to the relative ease of PC M+K.

Still waiting for Max Payne 4

    • +3

The next installment is a remake of 1 and 2 if I'm remembering right.

  • What’s this bullshit about having to link stream account to buy?

    • Avoids you having to copy and paste keys from Humble into Steam. There are other reasons too, like stopping the resellers.

      • +1

That’s not a good enough reason when the likes of Fanatical or Eneba (official resellers) don’t require this. Too many softwares want in on everything these days. They can bugger off.

        • It's just an authentication system, like signing in with Google or Facebook. Nothing to worry about really. Fanatical will probably follow Humble soon enough.

    Great find @Hiphopopotamus

Old school FPS goodness👌 The narration and story board cut scenes greatly elevate the atmosphere and mood, I wish more games did this!

Actually, Thief 1, 2 and 3 also did this exceptionally well, I highly recommend them, and they are dirt cheap when on a Steam sale and with texture mods they still look very pretty, because of the fantastic art style.

They really pioneered stealth game play, and to this day, still among the best examples in the genre. And the soundscape and audio fidelity is of outstanding quality, better than many modern games imo.

      FPS?

        Fird.

@ozbargainer88 Sorry, not sure why I typed that, but I meant (3rd person) shooter 😅

I would edit it, but the website doesn't allow me after 30 minutes or whatever the time limit is.

  • The ultimate myki inspector

  • Thanks OP! 1 and 2 are much better than 3 that I still haven't finished the game…

PRO TIP: Check if you own the game already… my stupid ass forgot.

Here's Max Payne 1 if you want it:

    Replace the words, obviously.

    • Thanks, oh gracious earl/popular lunch option. Shoot me a PM if you'd like a spare GOG code in return, I have a few doubles from recent Amazon freebies already in my collection.

  • Thanks for the deal. Also both of these games are compatible with RTX Remix (basically fancy remastering with fancy Nvidia GPUs: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/rtx-remix/ ) and are getting actively worked on enhancing. So for the price, I am in for seeing what becomes of it, else they can stay on the very large pile of shame. Thankfully the new Steam Family Sharing is letting my family take advantage of it.

  • Patiently waiting for the remakes
