  • Early bird catches the worm with this deal!

Edit: does the deal commence from 5am or 8am today?

    • +1

8am AEDT. I edited before seeing your comment. (5am in Perth where I'm located and still Fri night here)

  • I have never purchased this before.
    1. Can it be used at Coles Express or Shell only?
    2. Is it exactly this same as 7-11 gift cards? (i.e. can it be used at all servo of any brand?)
    3. Can it be used to purchase physical gift cards? (i.e. this same as 7-11 gift cards)
    4. Can it be added to Google Wallet? or is it like Coles e-gift card pdf?
    Thanks in advance.

Edit: I will answer my own Q4.

To redeem your Shell eGift Card in-store, you need to add the eGift to your Mobile Wallet and simply tap your Mobile Wallet on the EFTPOS/VISA machine to make a contactless payment.

@AsukaST The Shell gift card is fairly new. I also haven't bought before.

      1. Can it be used at Coles Express or Shell only?
      1. Is it exactly this same as 7-11 gift cards? (i.e. can it be used at all servo of any brand?)

The Shell gift card appears to be different and possibly restricted to participating Shell service stations. Merchant Category Codes are not mentioned unlike the 7-Eleven gift cards. I will have to test the Shell gift card at other service stations.

      1. Can it be used to purchase physical gift cards? (i.e. this same as 7-11 gift cards)

Don't know and will have to test this.

      1. Can it be added to Google Wallet? or is it like Coles e-gift card pdf?

There was a mistake in the original T&Cs from ShopBack. ShopBack has edited that the eGift card has to be added to a Mobile Wallet and then tap on the machine, as you mentioned.

      • +9

They’re not merchant category gift cards like the 7-Eleven Visas but they do still work to buy Coles Group & Myer (and presumably other) gift cards at Coles/Reddy Express service stations.

        • +10

          @VantageXL Thanks for the confirmation.
@AsukaST I just bought a Coles Group & Myer gift card using 2 X $100 Shell gift cards.
I also tried to use the Shell gift card at United Petroleum service station but it was declined. The Shell gift card seems to be restricted to Shell branded service stations.

          • @trixieb: Can you use the Coles Myer gc to buy Bunnings gc from coles?

          • @trixieb: did you buy 1* 200 cole gift card or 2* 100?

            • +1

@Cataclysm: I bought 1 x $200 Coles Group & Myer gift card by tapping 2 x $100 Shell gift cards. Coles Express doesn't appear to have a limit of how many cards one can tap in the same transaction. The maximum Coles Group & Myer gift card value you can add is $500.

  • Do these gift cards stack with Coles Flybuys' 4cpl discount?

    • +4

Yes. The gift card is like a payment card. It would stack with Coles Supermarket 4cpl fuel discount and the Coles Express 'Spend $20, save 10cpl fuel discount' offer in store.

  • I’m trying to remember if they sell any gift cards with BCF on them at Coles/Reddy Express, does anyone else remember? I know some of the TCN ones have it, but I can’t remember if they’re sold at the servo or not

    • +1

Shell Coles/Reddy Express should sell a small range of TCN gift cards, including TCN Him gift cards (which feature BCF as a participating retailer).

A word of warning though: someone told me yesterday their local Shell Reddy Express removed all gift cards from sale, because that service station had just upgraded their checkout system (as part of the transition to Reddy Express), and the new checkout system was at that time unable to handle purchases of gift cards.

      • +1

Good to know for the future - ended up getting the Action card at 4% cashback and $5 bonus (the SB+ fee negates the other $5 discount)

Edit - But as always, appreciate your gift card insights

        • +4

For reference, here's a pic of the gift cards at a Reddy Express station this evening:
          https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/121422/117008/csh.png

@WookieMonster After your comment about the system upgrade, I converted my Shell gift card (from SB's offer) this evening to Coles Group & Myer gift card in case they stop selling or the loophole closed. Went to a Reddy Express station (recently changed from Coles).

          • +1

@trixieb: Excellent, will have to check out my local Coles Express and see what they have.

          • @trixieb: Sadly mine (still a Coles Express) just had the two Vanilla Visas, $100 EFTPOS and Shell gift cards. The peg in the number 1 position was empty though so maybe they've been cleared out of Coles Myer.

            • @wavesgreen: With the change to Reddy Express, I asked staff yesterday if the Coles Group & Myer gift cards would still be stocked in future but he didn't know.
Hopefully your local will be restocked.

          • +1

@trixieb: Didn’t grab a pic, but mostly the same selection at my local plus a few select stores such as BCF (naturally aha) and eBay

      • -1

Hate to call on you again, but I’m suddenly in need of $280 in Bunnings cards - what would you suggest is the best option atm?

        • +1

          A tricky one.

          • I am not sure which gift cards on ShopBack feature Bunnings as an exchange option, so it may be worth checking the Discounted eGift Card wiki.

          • I would personally use a Category Choice Groceries gift cards purchased at a discount to then purchase Bunnings gift cards in-store at Coles.

          • Honestly, if you have a Woolworths with the TCN eftpos gift cards in stock, it may be better value to purchase a TCN eftpos gift card with $500 loaded onto it. You could even use that to purchase Bunnings gift cards in-store at Coles, especially since you earn 1x Flybuys point per $1 spent on Bunnings gift cards at Coles.

          • @WookieMonster: ShopBack Home (via Westpac and assuming a previous purchase, because they’ve removed the card from the list) has Bunnings and gives 2.25%

Is anywhere doing Category Choice at a discount right now? Can’t see anywhere myself

Woolworths and TCN stock isn’t an issue for me (yay regional VIC!), but spending $500, when I don’t even want to be spending $280, is aha

            • @linkindan:

Is anywhere doing Category Choice at a discount right now?

Sorry, I should have been clearer.

Some discounted gift card portals (such as HCF Thank You, Australian Unity Wellplan Rewards) sell Category Choice Groceries gift cards at a discount everyday, and this is already listed on the Discounted eGift Card wiki. That is where I get them myself.

Woolworths and TCN stock isn’t an issue for me (yay regional VIC!), but spending $500, when I don’t even want to be spending $280, is aha

              Fair enough!

I guess that means ShopBack is probably your best bet.

              • +1

@WookieMonster: Boo! I’ll have a look at Coles Express on Monday, maybe I’ll be lucky and mine will have Bunnings in some form

Or maybe I’ll be even luckier still and we’ll have an unseasonably pleasant summer 🙃

Any idea how to add the giftcard to the Wallet? I tried adding them to Google & Samsung Wallet without success - keep saying card not supported

    • Although it's a gift card, when you add to Wallet, you choose the first option "Payment card" (not Gift card). Then enter details manually by adding the numbers to "Add credit or debit card".

      • +2

Tried with Google Wallet & got a "Couldn't finish card setup for pay contactless"
Samsung gave me "Card not supported"

        • Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Google Wallet?
Or clear the cache and data of the Google Wallet app in your phone's settings and restart Wallet?

          • @trixieb: Just reinstalled Google Wallet, still cant add as Payment Card
I can add it as Giftcard but I dont think that can be used instore

            • @nhatdisk: I have the exact same issue, with two different cards, it's frustrating

            • +1

              @nhatdisk: @dinted Sorry, will ask @WookieMonster

              Shell FAQs:

I’m having trouble adding my eGift Card to my mobile wallet.

Apple, Google, and Samsung Wallets have limits to the total number of cards a user can have in their wallet at any one time. These companies have their own security process that may stop a user from being able to add a card to their digital wallet. Shell Gift Cards has no control of these security protocols put in place by Apple, Google, or Samsung Wallets.

If you are experiencing a different issue with your eGift Card, please get in touch by calling 1800 465 544.

              • +1

@trixieb: Same here frustrating…shopback simply putting the blame on Google pay…I think ozb members should boycott shopback

Edit tried with a different phone (spouse) with different wallet and same issue. Shopback should actually sort this out with issuer of card than saying not their issue

                • @zooter: @nhatdisk @dinted Sorry to hear it's still not working. Seems to be a recent issue as they were working last week. These Shell eGift cards are fairly new and sold elsewhere too. I don't expect ShopBack to do much or care.

I will call Shell and the issuer Blackhawk Network tomorrow to check if they are aware of any issues adding the cards to Google and Samsung Wallets. It could be the same with Apple Wallet but no one has reported yet.

                  • @trixieb: @Cataclysm Just checking if you also have issues adding the Shell eGift card to your mobile wallet. Would like to find out how many people are affected so I can inform the issuer Blackhawk Network.

                    • @trixieb: @trixieb I have same issues, can't add the Shell eGift card to my wallet. I've tried Google and Apple wallet, but no luck. I suspect it's the gift card itself that has an issue then called 1800 465 544 for customer support, ask them to check the card. They say all good on their end, so what the problem is still a mystery.

                      • +1

@owl3411: Thanks for the info. The number you rang is Shell. Will contact the issuer Blackhawk Network tomorrow and inform them of the issue.
@nhatdisk @dinted @zooter @Chatgpttrue I just tried to add two of my Shell eGift cards to Google Wallet and wasn't able to add as you all have encountered. These cards were added to Wallet last week, redeemed and removed from Wallet. I was able to check the balance of these cards.

                        • +1

@trixieb: Thanks @trixieb I appreciate you looking into this.

  • @trixieb I've had the same problem in the past when adding this and similar gift cards to Google wallet.

I have access to Samsung wallet and use this as a workaround.

    • Thanks. nhatdisk mentioned not being able to add to Samsung Wallet as well. Hence I thought there could be an issue with the eGift card itself.

I tried adding them to Google & Samsung Wallet without success - keep saying card not supported
Samsung gave me "Card not supported"
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15886964/redir

      • Yeah that's odd. I don't seem to have that problem with Samsung wallet. I have been able to add various gift cards to Samsung wallet

It may be a problem with the gift card. Nhatdisk should go on the Shell website or ring customer support to check the card is active. And if he/she has access to another mobile to try to add the Shell card to the wallet in the other mobile.

This is what I would do.

        • There are two other persons in the comments above that also can't add to Google Wallet and tried different phones. Perhaps it's an issue with the gift card.

          • @trixieb: Thanks @trixieb for looking into this. I can check the balance via card balance but suspect it is a gift card issue. Typically when I add a card to Google wallet (which i verified last night), it checks something then asks for acceptance to terms then finalizes adding…the termsconfirmation doesn't happen at all for these gift cards…

Edit: I bought a 7 eleven gift card from shop back 6% up sized which was what took me to shopback app last night (the deal seems active today only)…I was able to add this successfully to Google Wallet indicating further proof that shell card could be the issue

Btw sorry for the -ve vote on the deal…i want to warn people of issues with this one but happy to revoke the negative vote if this problem gets resolved

  • +5

@zooter @nhatdisk @dinted @owl3411 @Chatgpttrue Just spent over an hour on the phone with Blackhawk Network's overseas call centre. The first person I talked to wasn't that helpful. Rang back and a different person informed me that there is already an escalated case from ShopBack about these Shell and 7-Eleven eGift cards not being able to be added to mobile wallets. I was given a case number for our complaint and they will get back to me in 3-5 business days. I wasn't able to speak to a supervisor or manager and had waited several minutes for them but they were busy.

Has anyone have the problem with adding the card to the wallet?
I can add the card with another iphone(11)
But i cannot add with the iphone14 pro
    It said invalid card

    • +1

@Gussi Can you please try adding the card again? It could be working now.

The issue was reported earlier: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15892023/redir

      Working now: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15894928/redir

      • I have tried lots of time.
I can add to my iPhone 11 but not iphone 14 pro
        I still dont know why…

        • Do you frequently add and remove gift cards from Blackhawk Network (e.g. Activ Visa, 7-Eleven digital, Restaurant Choice) on your iPhone 14 Pro? If so, it sounds like you are running into the Invalid Card error experienced by a few other people. My theory is that this is due to you failing the fraud checks Apple does when you attempt to add a new payment card to your device’s Apple Pay wallet. (The Apple Pay privacy policy mentions these fraud checks.)

          • @WookieMonster: still cannot add into my phone…

            • @Gussi: save time…
I'm one of such "other people" almost one year, gave up on my iPhone though still using.
My wife changed phone, so I took her iPhone as 2nd, never problem even add/remove 10+ in one week.

bring 2phones may not be convenient though.

              • @test8888: omg… which means i must use other phone to add the gift card?

              • @test8888: Seems a long time, almost a permanent block.
