    curved screen is a choice

      • +4

Literally sold my S22 Ultra just because of that curved edges

        • +15

Hated curved edge. Worst feature ever

      • Once you go curved screen you can't return it, because the first time you drop it you'll break it.

  • +5

Here before the "curved screen makes the whole phone rubbish" comments

Note: The G85 now has 4 years of security updates, unlike the standard 3 years that all G series phones used to get

    • So 4 more years of phantom screen taps from struggling to hold it without accidentally tapping the edges, not being able to hold the phone above your face while lying down, and photos looking like crap due to optical distortion at the edges. Thanks for the warning.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra had an excellent camera but was by far the worst phone I ever owned due to the curved screen. I couldn't grip it properly, and using it for Remote Desktop sessions was painful. Trying to tap the edges of the screen to access Windows Start Menu etc while not dropping it was soul-draining.

I replaced the S20 Ultra with a Motorola g84 without a curved screen. The g84 is just as snappy, much lighter and apart from a fairly average camera it's just so much more pleasant to use. I can grip it hard due to the large borders and my fingers don't block details at the edges of the stupid curved glass)

Disappointing that Motorola are phasing in curved glass when other manufacturers like Samsung have already ditched it.

  • +10

G84 has double the storage, dunno why they downgrade this

    • I think it is a marketing thing, they can pick any configurations but they decided to make this 128GB and 8GB. As Edge 50 Fusion is 256GB, 12GB, 30% more CPU performance and 68W charging (Adpater included which you can use it to charge a laptop) for $439!

    • It has the wide angle camera. I miss it, but will skip this phone

  • +26

This is one of the best phones in the world for the price. A phone with similar specs but a slightly faster CPU will cost $1797 with an Apple logo. (iPhone 16 Pro 128gb). I know with the iPhone you are respected more in society and life get's easier and making friend's get's easier too but those benefits becomes useless if you are a middle aged below average looking man. Just buy this and save your money because as a middle aged man or woman, you are already invisible to the world. So what if your family and friend's snicker at you when you pull out a Motorola Android phone at a dinner party or BBQ, you are old now, you do not need to impress anyone, your life is already on the decline. Just get this and save the money.

So what if your family and friend's snicker at you when you pull out a Motorola Android phone at a dinner party or BBQ, you are old now, you do not need to impress anyone

They'll be impressed when they see what a karate chop to the screen does.

    • +3

      word

    • +6

Moto phones are the best phones in the world purely for the karate chop torch. Every other phone is inferior after that.

    • Can you buy this phone and continue to use it with updates for 6 years like I did with my last iPhone?

      • +3

6 years? For the price of a base spec iPhone ($1400 iPhone 16 128GB), you can get Motorola to send you a brand new updated Motorola G phone every 3 years for 12 years. Double the years of support plus a new phone with new updated specs for free every 3 years. Why keep your old iPhone for 6 years? Get double the support of 12 years.

        • Seems quite wasteful - but I get your point. Most of the time when I see this type of phone for sale they appear to include no feature updates, aside from this one

      • You can continue to use an Android phone that don't get OEM updates anymore for years after. What people don't realise with Android, google has spent years designing the os around poor oem support. They have made it possible to continue getting updates to core apps, security updates outside the oem ones and even push out new features to older Android versions. Here's a good video explaining it

        https://youtu.be/nlV5hG2yIAI?si=Othws6HVOyG9lQDz

Apple on the other hand approach updates completely different, the core applications are built into the OS updates. Even things like browser updates you need an OS update to keep it up to date. Not the case with Android.

These Motorola phones have trade-offs obviously to reach the price point they can. Especially the camera. Hence I would spend more for a pixel phone that has a camera comparable to the flagship and good software support. I think they are the best all round more affordable phones. Each to their own

    • +1

Are there really that many people that judge your whole personality based on what phone you have? From my experience no one cares, which is how it should be.

Also, 'slightly faster CPU'- the iPhone 16 has a CPU that is 3.5 times faster on average. This is a decent phone for the price, but let's not kid ourselves.
For context, even the S20, which is almost 5 years old by this point still scores higher than this phone.

      • +2

Also, 'slightly faster CPU'- the iPhone 16 has a CPU that is 3.5 times faster on average. This is a decent phone for the price, but let's not kid ourselves.

What exactly are people doing with mobiles where they need that speed? Genuine question, as I used a Galaxy Note 3 for 9 years as my daily driver and still use it at home for web browsing, and often forget it's now 11 years old because majority of web pages load at the same speed as the S20 Ultra I briefly owned. Only remember it's old when trying to load 3 apps at a time, lack of RAM was the only thing forcing me to update.

I was running Firefox with uBlock Origin on the Note 3. When I tried running Chrome without uBlock on the S20 Ultra the experience was horrifically slow. Are people only buying new phones every few years just because they use Chrome without ad blocking?

        • +2

The truth is they get sick of their current phone for some small reason or no reason at all and the new phone appeals as some kind of dopamine hit life upgrade. It wears off quick. There's no rationalising phone upgrades outside of that imo unless dinnertime is upgrading from a super budget piece if crap.

          • +2

@gakko: I upgraded from an iPhone 12 Pro Max to the 16 Pro Max after 4 years. Noticed ZERO difference in actual use case. Exactly the same speed, no improvement in apps opening speed. Maybe gaming and battery life is better. But I don't game so my battery lasts me a whole day on the old 12 Pro Max. So it was a zero sum upgrade for the sake of upgrade. Dopamine hit lasted exactly 38 mins before I realised I just dropped $2500 on the same phone. Should have waited for the 17 pro max, at least that one is coming with a new design which I could flex to improve my social standing in society.

            • @Dollar Dreamer: Yeah I'm speaking from experience too but at a much lower price point heh. I tend to neglect my older phone until an upgrade is 'required'. It's a habit I'm trying to break.

        • I keep my phone updated because I care about the camera and for security updates. Because of banking apps and tap to pay. Interms of performance I stopped caring around the snpdragon 835 era. That's when Android phones got to the point they could run all the basic applications smoothly, and it also probably helped Android was matured. Especially Samsung version of Android, touchwiz was awful experience, one ui rectified things. I wrote something similar here before about performance of older devices still being more than acceptable compared with the latest and greatest. Copped a long of negative feedback for that perspective. Because I figure there's people looking for reasons to justify their purchase.

If making friends is dependent on what phone brand you use, then I don't want to make friends

      • +1

No bro, don't do it. Don't take this moral high ground because you will lose. When you are 50, old and ugly, getting weaker physically, you will long for friends. Don't do it, spend the money on a new phone and make lot's of friends now while you are young, strong and not as repulsive to society yet. You will thank me later in life. Don't try to fight the system bro, just flow with it.

  • How's the camera on this? Compared to a Pixel 7a?

    • +2

It is good enough. Similar quality to a 2 year old iPhone camera. A 2 year old iPhone with 20% depleted battery health is still $1000 used on Gumtree / Facebook and this Motorola is brand new and less than 1/3 the price of a 2 year old used iPhone so it's excellent value.

      • +1

Nice thanks Dollar. Seems like a great phone for the price

Still don't see a reason why to upgrade from Xiaomi 11 Lite 5G NE

    • I thought it won't work after 3G ends? I have one and I've been getting the messages. Interested if you know something I don't? I have the global version.

      • Global version should work:
        https://www.telstra.com.au/support/mobiles-devices/3g-closur…

Upgrade to a compatible device: To continue to connect to our mobile network you will need a device compatible with 4G frequency Band 28 (700Mhz) and Voice over LTE (VoLTE) including VoLTE Emergency Calling.

        https://www.kimovil.com/en/frequency-checker/AU/xiaomi-11-li…

        https://deviceguides.vodafone.co.uk/xiaomi/11-lite-5g-ne-and…

        • I have turned on VolTE and it works, but I'm not sure if emergency calling over Volte works. It could be because I'm on Telstra network which apparently uses harder to satisfy modem settings.

Do you have a Xiaomi lite 11 5g too? And if so, do you pass the checks?

          • @KaitoKid1412: I think that Telstra is unable to differentiate between the Global and Chinese versions. And it should work. But we will see soon.
I use Xiaomi 11 Lite 5G NE Global. Model number has G at the end in About Phone.
The phone satisfies both the frequency and the Volte setup.

        • I hope so I'm using a Note 11 Pro 5G from Ali. Been getting my phone won't be compatible messages. Just sitting and waiting to see what happens after the switch off then decide.

          • @Tiredman: Were you getting the warning message when making calls? I was, but today I stopped getting them and also received an email saying my device shouldn't be affected now, after several weeks of saying it would be affected. So confusing!!

@noskich, I also have the G version at the end, but I'm on a Telstra based network. I want to swap to an options avoid getting blocked. I want to change to Optus as the modem settings should be more compatible, but by the time I get my Sim card, it would be too late right? So when you do the phone check, your message says it satisfies the check?

          • @Tiredman: In the same boat with my Xiaomi mi 11i.

Couple of days will find out… And hopefully it works, otherwise this phone or similar over black friday I guess!

I almost never call anyway, literally few times a year, it's all wifi / 5g calls, but still in curious as to how jerky Telstra will be about it.

            • @teereb: Have you been getting the warning message when making calls? Mine stopped doing it, not sure if they just turned it off for everyone?

              • @KaitoKid1412: Yeah I made a call a couple of days ago and it did it.

But that would be the phone defaulting to 3g, even though it says LTE at the top of the screen now. 🤷

                See what happens I guess

              • @KaitoKid1412: Did you do anything to your phone other than unlock the LTE channel?

                • +1

@teereb: I dont think so, I unlocked LTE using the dialpad and set phone network to prefer LTE. That was it. Now I've swapped services to Optus but the 3G check doesn't work for newly swapped services.

                  • @KaitoKid1412: Ah if you're Optus that could be why the Telstra warning isn't happening?

                    • @teereb: I just swapped, while I was on Aldi/Telstra, I was getting the warning up until this morning when surprisingly it stopped, in line with an email saying I might not be affected anymore. Hard to know now given I've swapped out from Aldi (imagine I put myself back into affected territory!)

                      • @KaitoKid1412: It's Telstra closing their 3g; maybe Optus still using theirs.

                        • +1

@teereb: Just to confirm, all working on my end as expected. Xiaomi global version. Thanks.

                          • @noskich: Yeah mine is working this morning too; and still with the Telstra warning as well though

                          • @noskich: And it stopped working 😭

I'll have a little play but I think the phone is basically dead now; doubt I'll have access to adjust the band's on it.

I still assumed with the 3g closing I'd still have access to 4g and 5g, nope nothing.

                            • @teereb: Mine no warning and all good. You must have a Chinese version or you have not properly setup Volte and 5G.

Check the model in About Phone section, if it ends with a C it's Chinese, G is Global.

If it's global it all comes down to settings.

                              • @noskich: It's global; M2012K11G

Yeah I'm in the settings ATM, the *# 4246 *# (or whatever the number is, I'm in the testing page)
Is that where I need to be to change it?

                                Sorry for the questions.

                                • +1

@teereb: I can't remember how I did it ages ago when they announced the switch. You will need to Google it.

                                  • @noskich: All good, thanks mate!

                                  • @noskich: Looks like Telstra has just blocked this phone entirely, regardless that it can do everything required.
                                    Scummy move tbh.

                                    • @teereb: Maybe that model doesn't have the required frequency, even the Global version.

                                      • @noskich: Nah it does.

Telstra blocking phones according to their IMEI numbers, regardless of capabilities.

That just sounds completely fraudulent tbh.

Does the moto g85 work with Telstra? I've read quickly a few conflicting stories 😅

                                        • @teereb: I don't think they block by IMEI as my phone has always been marked as non compliant and I have always been getting those warning messages until a day prior to the switch. Then all of a sudden all working and no any issues and messages stopped.
This is Xiaomi 11 Lite 5G NE Global.

                                          • @noskich: Yeah I'll see what they say,. Will pop in to a shop tomorrow; in the mean time using my old Oppo, and black friday isn't far away at least.

But their checks are done on IMEI numbers, and my phone has every 4g band, so I dunno🤷

                                          • @noskich: My wife has a Mi 10T Lite 5G. She was getting the warnings every time she made a call, but she went to the Telstra store and showed them her phone, they checked the specs and said yep it's got the right bands, it will be fine.
Today it stopped working. They are IMEI blocking any imported phones they don't want on the network, regardless of specs or capabilities.

                                            • @flubba86: I really don't know what they are doing, my phone is still working fine and I certainly hope it stays that way.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune.

                                              • @noskich: Update on my wife's phone. I've been doing some experimenting, its only blocked on Telstra and Boost. I tried Optus and Vodafone and ALDI and its working (with VoLTE calls, and emergency calls) with all of those. So Telstra is doing a blacklisting for some Xiaomi models. Those of you with similar models who are still working, are you on Telstra?

                                          • @noskich: This is me too with the same model as you. I was with ALDI who all of a sudden said it was going to be fine.

I ended switching to Coles as I heard it was higher chances of survival (now I'm not so sure and wish I stayed on ALDI to confirm).

So far it is still working for me too, VIC.

                      • @KaitoKid1412: Aldi doesn't have support for VoLTE in some areas (4G data only).

                        • +1

                          @Tollery: Mine is still working.

                          Interesting piece of news:

                          https://amp.abc.net.au/article/104559096

                          • @noskich: "The new ACMA direction for the end of 3G also makes it a legal requirement for telcos to advise customers cut off from their services of "alternative mobile phones which are available, including low or no cost mobile phones, which are able to access the emergency call service". "

                            They have all failed.

  • So close to buying this after 4g shutdown but then i saw the poled/amoled screen types to be honest. I really havent had any luck with these screens. They barely last more than 3 years for me before they need replacing or just complete malfunction.

Done some googling and supposedly Poled has a shorter lifespan than amoled. So the search continues. Looks like Oppo A79 is my only option now.

    • +2

      4G shutdown? ? 6G is coming?

      • +2

Technically my 4g phone is getting shutdown so yea xD but that discussion has been done to death everywhere already. Just chill, have fun and adapt to the world around me.

I have this phone in olive green. I have nothing to complain about. I bought at 399 so to me this is a bargain price. Will absolutely recommend this phone to anyone.

Just remember it's not an iPhone or a Pixel and also doesn't have their price tag.

I also didn't find the curved edges an issue.

  • This or the Moto Fusion 50?!
    currently on sale as well

  • CHECK. Please contact your service provider or handset vendor, as your device may not be fully supported when 3G closes comes up with my G85 5G's IMEI with the phone updated to the latest system update.
