Yet Another Speed Reduction?

UNDER CONSTRUCTION
Project update
M80 Capacity Improvements – Princes Freeway to Western Freeway

A ~5km or so stretch of the m80 ring road will be dropped from 100 to 80

Also, a lot of other Melbourne freeways now 80 too

Damn

Won't be long before all freeways are limited to 40

Is there plans at all to bring these speeds back up to 100?

Nothing worse than crawling along a freeway at 80 :/

  • They've just done the same on Tapleys Hill Road which runs by the airport. No close residences, just playing fields and HarbourTown. Reduced from 80 to 60, so now it's bumper to bumper. Why?

    • Need those passenger numbers up to justify blowing all our money on contracts for mates… Oops I mean rail network upgrades.

  • +1

All accidents are caused by speed. 0kph target, zero accidents and $kagillions in fines… Win win

  • Won’t stop me doing 160 between the cameras.

  • Give it a few weeks, just like the eastern freeway, everyone will be back to doing 100

  • Lowering the limit of course lowers the flow rate and causes more congestion, obviously.
This in turn, causes more irritation and impatience, resulting in more dangerous driving behaviour.
This in turn causes more accidents.
This in turn results in an excuse to lower the speed limit for safety.
Ultimately, driving at 0km/h will give zero accidents.
Of course, this ignores the whole point of freeways being to move the maximum traffic in minimum time.
Dare I say that improving the minimum driving skills might help reduce accidents more than a lowering of the limit?

    • Lowering the limit of course lowers the flow rate and causes more congestion

This is not true in all cases. In some cases reducing the speed limit allows traffic to flow more freely which does decrease congestion.

  • The authorities should put up speed to 100kmh during peak hours morning and evenings.

    • Thats the opposite of what should happen.

Ever seen a slower section of traffic on a dual carriageway with no other blockages? Thats purely down to speed difference between speeders and those going a bit slower. All it takes is one slower vehicle and suddenly you have a bunch of cars crawling along at half the limit. Traffic engineers can calculate when and where itll happen.

  • Whay a joke, i drive on that road late at night on a regular basis. Why can't it be 100km/h when its not congested via the 'smart freeway management system'?
Any suggestions were to file a complaint?
