[QLD] Proposed OzBargain 18th Birthday - West End Meetup 1pm 16/11/2024 (35 People Min)

See latest update

Hello OzBargainers of Brisbane!

This is a proposed event to celebrate OzBargain's 18th anniversary. I'm in discussions with a venue in West End (Some Friends Bar) where we can hold a private function. The plan is for an afternoon of food (pizzas, cheese platter), some drinks (non-alcoholic, or you can purchase your own alcoholic drinks from the bar), trivia and prizes.

Seating will be in groups so it's an event to meet and chat to fellow OzBargainers.

Budget is TBC but keeping to the $45pp reimbursement limit.

In order to proceed I'll need to confirm a 35 person minimum.

If this number isn’t reached by the end of Saturday 26/10/2024 this event will not go ahead and will be cancelled.

I will require a deposit of $10 which I will collect after 26/10. This will be refunded upon attendance.

(This post was originally a regular forum post with a poll to indicate EOI. Mods have turned it into an event on Thu 24/10 and added it to the master post for OzBargain18 to give it more visibility. All who polled yes up to that point were converted to registered.)

    2 of us in.
Went to the one a few years ago, was a very good event!

Will there be OzBargain tshirts again this year? :)

See the linked master anniversary post for more details including info about shirts.

      • thank you, apologies I didn't see it before.

    Sounds good! I'm in.
Close to city is handy for many, like me. Good for public transport.

    Enjoyed many Ozbargain meets.
Since quop's original 2012 meet above a pub in the Valley!

Awesome will be good to see you again.

It's been a while since I organised a meetup - there have been many capable people in recent years but I thought I'd give it another go!

Your event predated the tradition of funded Ozbargain Birthday Meets that started 5 years later!
Ozbargain was not even 6 then!

Yup I guess it was the beta event and eventually scotty launched something site wide. I actually missed out on those first few years of official events, so didn't even know it was a thing until a few years ago!

          • +1

@quop: It was a good model for future paid meets. You showed it could be done! And scotty found the funds.
            Kudos to you👍

            • @INFIDEL: We also have all the people who turned up to thank for showing it can be done!

              • +1

@quop: Like with most of these Meets - we came for the free food & drink🎉

                • +1

@INFIDEL: And got to know other members. We had an enjoyable time..

      • +1

Can't wait to see you guys again!

  • West End works for me. Thank you. Lots of families will have kids sports on Saturdays like myself… So it'd be better if it's Sunday lunch or a dinner…

    • +2

Nothing's going to please everybody, so I can only go with what works for me as the organiser and the venue. So date & time is pretty set for this one.

If I can't get the numbers I may try for something else and will consider a Sunday dinner timing. You are off course more than welcome to organise another event that better suits your requirements.

  • Registered late for Sunnybank Lunch (#22 on waiting list for 30max) & had confirmed & paid deposit for Underwood Dinner…
    Had expressed interest here.

Just received System message that I was removed from this proposed event for "over attending" when this event was confirmed.

As there is a limit of 2 events per member, cancelled Sunnybank!

As this is largest event (35 min), will consider registering later.

Hmm I don’t know why this event became “confirmed” - it isn’t confirmed as far as I’m concerned and I didn’t request for the actual registration to be turned on.

      • Registration is open for event, rather than simply showing interest in the event..

Was surprised when received System Message, meaning my interest had been automatically turned into Event Registration!!!

        Mods need to fix this!
        Have cancelled Registration.

        • I've messaged the mods about this

          • @quop: Hope it works out!

Until your comment, had assumed you had changed to confirmed. Despite lack of 35 people interested.

            Just had not updated wording:
Still showed it was tentative & inviting interest…"This post is to gauge interest"

            • +1

@INFIDEL: Nope wasn’t initiated by me. I’ve checked with mods and posted an update/explanation.

  • New event Korean in City 22/11
    Cap: 20 people 10 registered in 1hr
    I do love KBBQ!

So many choices… (but limit of 2)
Remember when it was difficult to get 10 people to the only 1 free Ozbargain event in Brisbane!

  • So many are in waiting list at other venues, but why does this one still has not enough people?

    • 🤷‍♂️

    • A number of reasons are likely

This post is only to gauge interest!
As event isn't definite - people won't be in a rush to Register!

Originally Poll was to show interest. Changed later by Mod to Register!

As other events fill up, then the proposed West End event might be a possibility. If numbers are reached by 26/10!

Other events had very limited numbers, which creates demand. So, many signed up very quickly. But they might not be committed to attending.

(It's possible events could have found almost enough participants before posting - ensuring success!)

This is a different style of & larger event. With different style of food etc.

I've attended most Ozbargain Birthday Events. Helped out at some. It's changed this year.
A few years back there was only 1 event - with about 10 people attending.

  • The proposed event at Some Friends will not be proceeding due to insufficient numbers.

However, given there are a number of you keen to meet for that date & timing, I'm thinking of changing this to a restaurant and lunching / chatting together.

Haven't made any booking enquiries yet but I have in mind a 12pm lunch at The Gunshop Cafe in West End just outside West Village. They have a space at the back that can take larger groups. This location will be easier to get to by public transport, and there's 2hrs free parking at West Village.

If you're keen on this change let me know - preferably with a reply to this comment or at a minimum upvote this comment.

If you're not keen & no longer wish to come go ahead and cancel your registration.

I'll give your responses 24-48hrs to come in, then depending on the responses I'll either update the main post or cancel it altogether.
