Plumber Cracked Porcelain Cistern

My toilet cistern had a slow leak into the bowl.

Called a plumber to put in a new washer and also fix the stop cock for the suite as it leaked sometimes.
Plumber seemed to be taking a long time. After 40 mins he called me in. Said he replaced washer and still had slight leak. He appeared to be replacing the entire flushing unit (there was no consultation re this). Unfortunately, as he was removing the cistern from wall (why do you need to do this?) he cracked the porcelain cistern.

As cistern is 20 years old no replacement is available. I am starting to doubt this bloke was actually a plumber. Other than asking him, can I check through a 3rd party if he was a plumber? He is now saying I need a new toilet suite.

Where do I stand?

@theHMASfriendship: It took you 10 years to get out of nappies?

              @Gunnar:

10 years to get out of nappies?

I think there was an issue with the instructions.

They should have insurances for things like this unfortunately "Sh!t" happens sometimes and things like this need to be replaced.
Ask him to replace it under his insurance as he broke it and like you mentioned you didn't ask him to do this work.

If he is a plumber and has everything in check it wont be an issue, otherwise its a bit of an issue if he tries to wiggle out of it.

  • Is your toilet suite close-coupled? He would have been trying to replace your outlet valve, at which time a good plumber would also do the pan to cistern seal. Seems you'll need a new suite which is actually an opportunity; upgrade to rimless, tornado flush, perhaps ambulant height, choose a pan that allows you to add a bidet seat later. You'll be able to get the labour cheap/free and mates rates on the toilet itself because it's your contractor's mistake.

    • Not confident with this plumber

      • DIY

      • Just curious, how did you find this tradie? Hipages?

Normally you would look at the reviews and ratings before deciding on who to hire.

How did you get this plumber to come work for you, will say something about if he is a REAL plumber or NOT

    • Being an oz bargainer. Had a deal with council to get a free service on evap air con if I put a meter on to check usage. Thought when he came to do it I’d get him to do a couple of simple jobs. But “ boys “ do evap while plumber does jobs. So I pay plumbing rates for jobs. Ok can wear that. But big f up by supposed plumber. When he tried to take cistern off one of the nuts was ceased. I think that’s when the shit started ( sorry).

  • You want him to replace your 20 year old toilet? Are you a property investor, by any chance?

    • +1

Age played no factor into plumber breaking it, he broke it he should fix it. Take accountability

    • No just wanted the washer replaced. Have a 2nd toilet with same toilet suite. Had same washer changed few years ago 10 minutes.

was he an Airtasker? if so, he's got no chance of insurance after reading this

I am starting to doubt this bloke was actually a plumber.

Was his name Mario and did he have a thick moustache and blue overalls?

If not, he's not a real plumber

    • If not, he's not a real plumber

Mario's brother Luigi is also a real plumber.

    • Did he arrive by cart ?
