oh man this deal is talkin to me, is it fun to go to japan alone for a month?

    • +8

A month might be a bit long for a solo trip, imo. 2-3 weeks would be good

        • +8

          Sure

        • +5

That's exactly right. In fact it gets even more precise, 22 days is good but the second it ticks over to 23… Ruined trip.

        • +1

Why did you even ask then?

    • +9

Japan is probably the best country for a solo trip.

I went on a solo trip for 10 days in June and will go on for 20+ days in the Christmas break.

      • Did you do air bnbs? Also can I please ask how much you spent for a 10 day trip if you don’t mind sharing!

        • I didn't do air bnbs, hotels are pretty cheap for the most part and has small perks which I liked.

I'm not particularly sure how much I spent but genuinely good hotels are $100-$180 a night. Hostels/capsule hotels are decent too and are like $40 a night. Food is $15-20 for each meal, public transport will get you about $5 a day depending on how much you move around (fares are per trip not per day).

Shinkansen is pretty cool but it costs more than flights. Took one from tokyo to kyoto and its $140+ one way.

Also remember, the prices are generally cheaper than the above in more rural parts of japan

Everything else depends on where you are going and what you want to see or buy. Bulk of my spending was shopping lol, those anime merch, souvenirs and such don't come cheap.

If you want any more specific questions, I don't mind answering.

    • +1

Yes. Just plan to explore, the most I did in one place was 2 weeks in Tokyo. Staying in hostels are good too because you meet people and end up exploring together (its hit and miss with the people lol)

    • yes i did it last year and doing it again

    • I go every year solo for around a month. Next year will be my 6th trip

with a budget of $100 for food/spending (not including accomodation/flights) I stay in budget hotels. I spend around 8000~ for the whole month

  • do we get free domestic flights with this ticket?

    • +5

This looks like the same deal as what I got emailed about. Yes free domestic flights and the deal expires tomorrow.

      https://www.ana.co.jp/en/au/plan-book/promotions/hellobluesa…

      • Oh wow, time to get on my bike!

        • been following for awhile now. ANA Blue sale appears to happen every 28 days, and except for Nov 2024 dates, expect most of those sale dates to be available again with the next sale (should start 15 Nov).

  • Has anyone else had issues trying to book domestic flights? JAL and ANA advertise free domestic with return international flights but it always seems to increase the price by hundreds when doing a multi city booking.

    • Or have I totally misinterpreted this and its just one free connecting flight

      • It's not only 1. I used it in May for Tokyo > Osaka and Osaka > Tokyo.

I just searched on dates above as and it still works.

        Example:

        1/5 Sydney to Haneda
        7/5 Haneda to Osaka (Kobe)
        10/5 Osaka (Kobe) to Haneda
        12/5 Haneda to Sydney

        ~$1000

        • +1

I think it may need to involve Tokyo directly, I was attempting to fly around before returning to Tokyo and back to Sydney:

          Sydney - Okinawa - Fukuoka - Sapporo - Tokyo - Sydney

          • +1

            @ThatNegusGuy: From the deal page

Fares to Tokyo and to other cities via Tokyo are the SAME when purchased and issued together with international tickets.

  • Anyone regular travellers who see this thread have a favourite mid range hotel in central tokyo? 200-350ish per night?

    • +2

APA and spend your money on other things.

      • +1

APA looked dodgy as, but i just stumbled across HOTEL AMANEK and it looked much better. Any opinions on that?

        • I think that user travels differently to you ;)

          • +4

@orbital: Hardly. They're both 3 star business hotel chains from what I can see. APA is very good though. Everything you need at a good price. I recently stayed at APA in Ryogoku and it had a big onsen in the basement free to use. Was great.

        • +1

APA looks dodgy but you want to stay in Kabukicho? Lol

          • @ozbargainer88: Oh i didn't mean dodgy neighbourhood, meant dodgy looking rooms and bathroom. And reviews aren't amazing - size, smell, mould, cleanliness etc. For comparable price the rooms at Amanek look much better.

        • +1

APA as a hotel chain is reasonably solid. They're clean ok priced and literally everywhere. It's like booking ibis budget. You expect similar things everywhere.

The main problem with APA depends on your views. The owner is a bit of a right wing extremist.

      • +1

        THIS.

APA is generally the cheapest but there's also other business hotels which is kinda good like Tokyu Stay, Fresa Inn, Dormy Inn, etc

      • +2

APA's owners have a revisionist ideology, and at least from my point of view wouldn't touch with a ten metre pole. And everyone else don't like how small their rooms are.

I stay at the SUPER Hotel in Akihabara- only five minutes away from three different rail and subway lines.

      • According to Reddit, APA Group had been caught redhanded with regard to building violations (including earthquake standards)

        Is that true?

    • Are you a member of any hotel chains to gain some points?

Or Qantas frequent flyer for their current offer of 9 points per $1 spent.

    • I used Tokyu Stay in Yotsuya which is in Shinjuku for about that much.

It was big for one person and comfortable enough. Tokyo is so interconnected, it doesn't matter too much where you stay

    • I stayed at APA Roppongi in August, solid 3-star hotel, in a nice area. Have also stayed at Toyoko Inn years ago, another good chain.

  • +4

Make sure to avoid June-July-August, the hot weather is just too extreme.

    • Serious question, do you think it's any worse than Sydney summers?

      • It is, was there June this year, was "manageable" (no choice) especially those endless walks and waiting for "rides" at parks, but to be honest, we said "never again on this month". And heard from relatives and fb people that July and August were worse that there were days that they chose to just stay inside the hotel.

      • +4

It is extremely humid and not like Sydney summers.

      • Think more tropical, like Singapore heatwave.

      • +1

        Yes.

Aussie summers at its peak is just hot.
Japanese summers is perpetually humid and hot. Its like being in South East Asia with 30-40degree days everyday.
Oh it can still be 30+ after midnight with 100% humidity.

    • +1

I was there this July, let me put it this way, it's worse than Brisbane's summer. You do not want to go to Japan especially Tokyo in peak summer season, country side is a bit better as there's wind but visiting concrete jungle Tokyo in summer is something that I'll never do again.

    • I went early June and it was fine.

But anything past mid-June and summer is really in full swing.

    • I was in Tokyo August and the humidity was quite unbearable

  • +2

ANA Blue sales tends to occur every 28 days, so if you miss this, expect the same sale to appear on 15 Nov. Would expect it'll include all dates except for Nov 2024 dates.

    Recently booked for May 2025.

    Sydney to Tokyo,
    Tokyo to Fukuoka,
    Okinawa to Osaka,
    Tokyo to Sydney

$1120 (wanted overnight long haul flights both ways which cost more for my dates).

Used the free internal flights for the most expensive legs, and booked the other connecting flights separately as adding these to the multi city changed the fare price significantly.

Would only utilise the free domestic flights for long distances or to locations that are not accessible by shinkansen, e.g. Sapporo, Okinawa, Fukuoka. IMO unless you're only objective is to save $, short distance flights like Tokyo-Osaka are not very convenient. Flew this route in May this year, and all up it was about 4 hours between transport to and from airport, check in and flight as compared to <3hrs by train door to door.

    • Noting your mention of recurrence of the sales, would you think Perth flights would be included too? I’ve hung out too long for flights for january… and I think I’m never gonna score a deal now considering how late I’ve left it

  • +3

Note that ANA now only offer one piece of 23kg check-in luggage. Before they used to offer two pieces.

    • +1

Noticed this recently too. Bit of a bummer, especially if travelling in the colder months.

    • Really? How did you know that?

Ana website says 0-2 pieces for economy.. what does that depend on?

      https://www.ana.co.jp/en/au/travel-information/baggage-infor…

I booked ana flight earlier in the year for dec via velocity reward seat (NH code) it says 2 pieces. Am I safe to assume it will be 2 pieces x 23 kg..?

      • I booked a week ago and it definitely says 1x23kg for checked in luggage

  • No Autumn school holidays. Always the case with these sales.

  • Ahhh crap, I booked a few days ago and completely forgot about the free internal flights. Has anyone had luck adding these on after booking?
