  • I'm traveling for almost a year and will need to replace my rtx 3080 desktop with a laptop. This should at least match it, but are MSI laptops reliable? I've heard of heat issues.

I have a MSI gaming laptop. The screen started crapping out with horizontal bands at the very bottom of the screen (after warranty). Fortunately, given the location, it was not all that bad. However, after a while, the screen went black and has not worked again. Definitely a hardware error as I could see the lines even in the BIOS screen, and now can't see anything at all. In googling, others have reported the same issue. Now, I have a very expensive ($4000 at the time) desk bound PC (since it is not portable as it has no functional screen). I didn't mistreat it or drop it. It was carefully looked after and only lightly used (I bought it for gaming when I travelled but changed jobs and stopped travelling).

I've had many many laptops over the years, and even worked for a year looking after Thinkpads. I would not buy MSI again. Apart from the screen issues, Cooling was shite, and fans were super loud.

Yes, admittedly this is just a sample size of 1, but I thought I would provide feedback.

How long ago did you purchase? Considering how expensive the laptop is, you could potentially argue it's not reasonable under consumer law.

My MSI Stealth laptop screen also died after about 3.5 years. Same issue with Kinjiru.

      • Thanks. I think I'll give MSI a miss.

There’s the HP Omen on eBay. Not quite under $3k but it gets closer with the plus code.

Just wait for their next sale which happening very often on their ebay store

      • Seems to be around monthly sales for HP eBay sales

    • Any advice, if the HP is ok as a "creators" Lappie for my partner, to edit video. Might be a bit bulky ? Was looking at the Dell Inpiron 16 Plus as a possibility, runs a 4060 from memory.

If you're not in a rush I believe the Omen will inch closer to 2.5k within the next couple months

This was the last promo just shy of 2.7k https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/867378

  • worth calling out that this screen does not have g-sync or freesync so you will likely experience stuttering, frame tearing etc…

I brought the 2023 version of this model a year ago. But within only 3 months the built-in sound card died… The only MSI service station is located in Sydney so I had to ship my laptop and wait for 1-2 weeks. Finally it works after replacing the whole motherboard.

    It’s not a common problem I guess.

Besides this, the laptop works well for gaming if you don’t mind the super loud fan noise.

There is not much point not waiting for the Omen 17 deal to come back.

MSI generally falls behind with regards to their gaming laptops. They do have flagship ones with flagship quality, but the Vector certainly isnt flagship by any stretch of the road. Vector is definitely a decently rated machine as is before and nothing like MSIs even lower end lineups, but I guess the point of all this rumbling is me trying to say that I definitely wouldnt take it for 3 grand not with omen 17 4090s at near this price and omen 17 4080s lower. You are definitely not going to get magically better cooling on Vectors cooling and it doesnt offer anything special.
