    User name checks out.
Sodium bicarbonate. Just buy it at your local supermarket for around same price or less everyday.

Shame they don't sell PH Down (i.e. dry acid) as well.

  • +2

Lol I buy sodium bicarbonate for $65 for 25 kgs. Check your local chemical supply companies, people! (Or even food supply stores; hippies use sodium bicarbonate to make bath bombs or some such)

This. Didn't take me long after becoming a pool owner to realise that "Sodium Bicarbonate 1000g/KG" was pool-shop marketing speak for "yeah sucker we're selling you pure bicarb at $30/kg".

Here in Brisbane, Viva Blu does 25kg of bicarb $58 (free local delivery or pickup Windsor).

    • Thanks for the heads up.
Can get 25kg for $43 - rural supplier used in stock feed

      • Link would be awesome, pls

        • +1

Just Google "rural stock supplies bicarb soda"

          For example - $35 for 25kg bag:
          https://tgrm.com.au/_products//Products/PRODUCE/BI-CARBSODA(SODIUMBICARBONATE)25KG942983-8102-23399-.aspx

    • Why do you need so much, I doubt I use 2kg a season for 50000 litre pool.

      • What type of water do you have?
        Mine is freshwater

        • Just Salt, I only really add Acid one a week.

  • Yep $65/25kg for me too.
Don't mess around with <10kg bags if it's for your pool. You're paying through the nose.

  • Algae killer Bunnings 2l $16.40
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/hy-clor-2l-pool-algaecide_p30901…

I like the copper based stuff as it lasts 6mths

    • To be honest if your pool is balanced correctly with proper amounts of sanitizer you shouldn't need any algaecide. These are the kind of products the pool industry makes a fortune on. Be particularly careful with copper. Gotta make sure your free chlorine levels are still high enough.

      • yeah it's hard keeping balance right when nature keeps dumping leaves, dirt, pollen & rain continuously in your pool. chemicals get diluted & phosphate levels increase.

Any ideas of where to get cheap Cyanuric acid?

    • +1

      Would also like to know.

    • Bunnings has 2kg Hyclo stabiliser (isocyanutic acid) $10.46 (was $25)

  • I have a new pool and im trying to muddle through how to do stuff - paying loads extra in the process. Anyone got a good link to somewhere that explains all this please?

      Only site you'll ever need.

Pool Math app and the forums are also excellent.

    • Did you get a fresh water pool?

    • I must say I bought one of the Solar-copper floats and we love it - minimal chlorine needed and its never got algae. (cheap and nasty above ground from Costco with upgraded glass filter/pump combo)

I agree with buying kg of alkalinity up from supermarket
Does anyone have a method of buying sunblock (cyanuric acid)?

    • Agree, would be good to know where to get economical stabiliser

  • I have been following Shannon Lush’s idea of 1/2 scoop washing powder, 1/2 scoop bicarbonate and filling the softener tray in your machine with white vinegar. It cuts down the cost and washes and cleans beautifully. Also works great with 1/8 of your regular liquid.

  • Just bought a house with a pool and no next to nothing about how to maintain it. Ive heard brining some bottled water to the local pool shop will likely lead to you always being sold something regardless if you need it…

I have some of the testing strips… likely it needs something added as hasn't had anything in at least 4 months.

I assume I need some of this bi-carb stuff.. but will be going for these 25kg bags from posts above… cheers

Largely you need acid and chlorine I have had a new pool for 3 years and maybe used 10kg of this.

      No, don't buy 25kgs lol.

Test your pool and workout what you need.
