Can definitely be got for less, but I absolutely (profanity) love mine. More convenient for quick pickups than the Steam Deck, infinitely more powerful than the R36S, better screen than the (standard) Switch. Ripper.

    • Is it android OS?

Can you run steam on it?

      • Steam Link probably but I wouldn't know. Full fat Steam though, no shot.

    • I need to go back to mine and set it up properly. Started going off the retro corps guide but hit some issues and sidelined it.

Any suggestions for setup guides, or is the RC stuff the best to work with?

      • +1

I just used the built in stuff. Did what I do with any new Android device. Uninstalled what I could, disabled what I couldn't. I updated pretty well all the emulators to their latest versions (Dolphin on the Play Store, make sure you sign up to beta testing on it's store page, the actual app itself is rarely updated but the beta is quite often), don't update the PS2 emulator bc the only real thing they did (it's defunct now) in the last update was add ads. They're only on the game selection screen, but still, why update to make it worse?

Front ends are fun and all but I don't bother, a clean Android menu with a fun background is fine. I have the emulators I use (there's like 7 or so) on my main menu, half a dozen Android games (mostly GTA tbh), and the remote play console apps on the screen and that's it, everything else is hidden away in the app slider so you never see it unless you go looking. Currently got the Matrix live wallpaper, looks nice and spiffy, I'm a sucker for a nice high res video wallpaper, ever since I had a GIF of the end swing from Spider-Man 2 on my Nokia like 15 odd years ago, can't go back.

Point being, there's no real setup required, you can use it as is out of the box. Customize as you see fit to make it prettier or more how you like, but emulation performance wise, she's good to go really.

      • You don't need a front-end, but I had a lot of fun setting up Emulation Station on my Retroid. It makes it feel like more of a console rather than an Android device with games. Daijisho is a good free option.

In related Handheld Console news - AYN just revealed their new Odin Portal (SD8 Gen 2, 1080p 7" 120Hz Touch Screen, AMOLED, Hall Sticks).

Will definitely be ALOT more expensive than tha Anbernic RG556.

    • So disapointed on the form factor. WIthout palm grips my hands hurt in less than 30 minutes.

I've been happy with mine, paid $211 for it in June. I haven't touched my Miyoo Mini + since getting it, despite primarily still playing GBA on this. I keep toying with PS2, PSP and GC then going back to GBA.

Weirdly, despite having used android phones for 15 years, I have found android to be a far more annoying handheld console OS than I'd think, but once you get it properly set up with a good front end you can forget about that and just use it like it is a linux console. If buying now I would toss up with the Retroid Pocket 5 though, as that seems like a compelling product.

I also recommend applying Gamma's fix for the sticks as they have cardinal snapping issues from factory. Do so as soon as you get the device as the process will wipe it.

I also recommend applying Gamma's fix for the sticks as they have cardinal snapping issues from factory.

PS: If you have the Anbernic RG40XX & RG35XX H, Gamma also fixed the cardinal snapping. It's also included in the latest muOS Update.

    • Oh wow that's fantastic, I bought one but returned it because of that exact issue - for some games it was just really really rough and made it impossible to enjoy.

Looks like with that fix in place they behave as they should, that's a night and day difference.

  • This or wait for the Rp5?

    • +4

Depends what you wish to play. If you really want to delve deep into PS2 and GC, I'd say you will have a better overall experience with the RP5, due to better performance and also better Analog sticks. If you just want a nice, decent sized screen to play everything less powerful than those, and play a bit of those.

I would say the RG556 is a good buy at Sub $250, at this price it is only okay. The Retroid Pocket 5 looks to come to USD$239 or roughly AUD$356 shipped. Better analog sticks, likely better software support and better performance and compatibility (Snapdragon chips typically have better software support than Unisoc or Mediatek chipsets), and at this price I think i'd spend the extra $70.

If the RG556 ever gets back down to the $211 I got it for in June, i'd say it makes an extremely compelling value argument, but at 284, it's not as convincing.

  • What benifit do i get buying this over a gamesir controller for my android phone?

    • +1

I'm just going to assume you have a similarly spec'd (or better) phone, with an OLED too, or else I'd say performance and screen would be two as well, but

      • Doesn't waste your phone battery
      • Doesn't waste your phone storage
      • Can be expanded via SD (not every phone can anymore, unfortunately)
      • No awkward syncing issues (sometimes those remotes, albeit not super often, don't want to reconnect easily)
      • Reddit and other communities with the same device for support
      • Has stupid light up RGB joysticks, if you like that
      • Ergonomics are quite nice, there's nice controllers out there too, but based on the limited time I spent with a mate's PS5 Backbone for iPhone, this is a lot more comfortable
      • Profit?

…as well as many a phone no longer having an SD, this also has a retro 3.5mm jack.

  • Can you root?

    • +2

I like to think my enthusiasm makes up for my lack of ability.

  • I got this a few months ago from An Aliexpress sale for $230ish. I also have multiple other handhelds. Has a beautiful OLED screen but as others have mentioned use GammaOS to fix the cardinal stick issue before setting it up. It's mainly used for PS2, GC and Wii.

  • Wait for the inevitable 20% cross border trade eBay deal. It happens semi frequently.

  • Great for emulation goes without saying.

If you don’t like bulky handhelds or want something that can more easily fit into your everyday go bag without needing its own dedicated case like your bigger PC handhelds (for reference I also own steam decks, Rog Ally & Legion Go).

I actually find the screen for this to be better than expected I guess combo of AMOLED + smaller screen size really helps to boost perception of image quality. I treat this like a phone in terms of tailoring my expectations for display size…

I also have used it for streaming games which worked well.

    Love mine.

Be sure to run TheGammaSqueeze mod to fix the cardinal snapping on the sticks. Completely different beast after this.

    Takes 15 mins to do.
