  • @Look Up, welcome back.

I thought it was MSI Spatchcock for a minute there

  • +1

Thanks Op. Ordered one. Delivery says end of Nov but Amazon are usually pretty conservative with their international delivery times, so hopefully it's quicker.

    Does this have DRAM?

    • +4

Based on the specification posted above "DRAM Cache: None, HMB Supported," the drive does not have DRAM.

  • +1

Cheers OP. Does it include a heatsink? or is that just a sticker designed to look like one lol

edit - pretty sure its just a sticker

    • +1

on the smaller MSI Spatium M450 it is just a sticker, i would bet it would be the same with this 2TB Model

      • Sweet, thanks!

    • No. 990 Evo Plus would be comparable

    • Specs wise, this MSI SSD looks better. Better NAND tech, 162L TLC instead of the more dated 133L TLC. Samsung held back 990 EVO so the max sequential read is 5000MB/s. That's under PS5's recommended 5500MB/s, which means according to Sony, 990 EVO is not suitable for PS5 (though you can use it). The new Phison controller seems quite good (for general usage, it is topping a few charts for gen 4 x4 SSDs).

990 EVO's PCIe gen 5 x2 support, currently, is hard to find good usage of it. Most PC boards don't do x2 x2 type bifurcations.

      • Thanks, I got the MSi one for my PC.

  • Bought the last one. Hope it is a good and bargain product.

    • +5

Plenty more available . It just keeps showing 'last one available'

      Sneaky

    Heatsink recommended for these?

Seems these are regularly on sale for US$109.99 (or US$99.99 without retail packaging) from MSI US so price seems about right.

Edit: I found this thermal test of the similarly compared MP600 Elite with a heatsink which did throttle with sustained writes after 10 minutes, so not sure how this would compare without the heatsink and actual real world use.

Toms review is for the 480 which has dram. This 482 does not

      • $180 for a dramless 2tb nvme ssd isnt the best deal. when sn850x's are $20-$30 more on special iirc
  • Only 1 left in stock.

    • I order 1, now only 2 left in stock…

      • +1

Same! They're lying about stock levels to encourage quicker sales. :)

        • or people are cancelling their order…

          • @bamzero: It is a very long delivery time, there is a chance of better local pricing in those 6 weeks.

I can now add 30 qty to my cart, so I suspect they updated their stock levels better.

  • Thanks OP, the 1TB SSD in the PS5 was getting rather cramped and I was eyeing an upgrade 👍

    • -5

      People play ps5?

  • +1

It basically has the newest DRAMless PCIe gen 4 x4 controller from Phison. The main objective is probably to support Kioxia 162L TLC. If powered using E21T, that TLC NAND gets handicapped. Good 4K random read and write IOPS performance.

Probably more of a Lexar NM790 competitor. Though, the pSLC cache implementation depends on the SSD maker and it seems that's one area SSD makers still want to hold back to prevent impeding into flagship SSD market. Anyway, specs wise, it meets PS5 recommended requirements. Also, it doesn't have the subpar random read/write latency issue of NM790. It is still DRAMless so if you somehow have database usage or heavy server usage, then it is probably still not ideal.

    • What is a tier a SSD?
      Samsung 990 pro?

      • +1

Depends, for PCIe gen 4 x4, 990 Pro is one of the top SSDs with consistent performance. However, Crucial T500 does beat 990 Pro in quite a number of tests (because that uses 232L Micron TLC, which technically can be used for gen 5 x4 SSDs). T500 uses a very aggressive pSLC cache so once that's depleted, the sequential write does drop by a lot.

PCIe gen 5 x4 SSDs are technically a tier above, if you have a motherboard which supports one. Crucial T705 is one of them. However, there is still a long way to go for PCIe gen 5 x4 SSDs as first gen PCIe gen 5 x4 SSDs don't fully utilise the bandwidth. 232L TLC NAND is a start, but we need even better tech to max out PCIe gen 5 x4.

Please tell me is it still good to buy or wait for black friday?

    • +1

Hodl and get a 4tb on black friday.

  • PS5 doesn't support HMB - I guess that only possibly matters for game installs.

  • MSI Sputum ? nah mate

  • +9

Am I missing something? Why would you get this MSI drive over something like the Kingston KC3000 for $208 AUD? I'd consider $20 delta fairly negligible. What's the deal with warranty also with Amazon US vs AUS?

the wd black or 990 pro with heatsink a few days earlier definitely better than this.
