  • is this different from a router?

      It is a router.

Laminate trimmer is for lighter duty and has limited adjustments compared to a fully featured router. Think of the laminate trimmer as a Router Lite.

      • And laminate trimmers are 1/4" / 12mm collet size compared to (usually) routers being 1/2" / 25mm. Laminate trimmers are much friendlier when handheld.

          Basically what you say but it's 6.35mm (1/4) and 12.7mm (1/2)
These trimmer has less power so less shaking when you use. Also they can be use in tricky places where a normal router won't fit.
They are more suited for jobsite instead of workshops where a normal router is much better in most situations.

  • I bought a knock-off last year for less than $80 and as a backyard user I can't tell the difference:

    • It's a Chinese version, probably not made from where this one is made but still legit. Curious does it come with 3-foot plug or 2-foot? I planned to get an orbital sander but the seller says it's a 2-foot plug that cannot be used directly in AU, not sure if this is the same case. Thanks.

        Isn't it battery powered?

        • Oh? That explains, the orbital sander I was looking is corded…maybe they are cheap because they are corded? Let reconfirm with the seller. Thanks for reminding me!

    • I havent bought any generic or knock off makita gear, but I think its a huge plus for backyard makita owners.

Makita quality is great, but they are so overpriced its not funny. There's a lot of discussion around this and its justification but none of it stacks up. The bottom line is, Makita (Milwaukee, …) charge it becuase people pay it.
