Westpac Discontinuing Cardless Cash Feature Tomorrow

First it's Latitude bringing in $8/month account keeping fee, now Westpac is removing their Cardless Cash feature effective tomorrow!

For me, I need Cardless Cash as it was the last puzzle piece to finally not have to carry a wallet. Might need to look into moving my banking to CBA now…

How does this impact other OzB Westpac customers?

    I need Cardless Cash

Then just pay with your card and be cashless instead :)

      15 minute city

      • -1

Most Ozbargainers couldn't even walk 5 minutes anyway.

    • +5

      Yes, along with the surcharge.

    • +1

      need Cardless Cash

      pay with your card

      Cardless, ie. no card.

      • +1

        Cardless, ie. no card.

        Whoosh…..

    • +3

Can’t buy baggies with card 🥺

    • +5

      It's owned by Westpac.

  • +8

I suspect it's a feature that costs a lot of money to maintain, but not enough people use.

    • -3

It's more likely another attack on the use of cash. They want to account for every single dollar. 1984 here we come.

  • +17

    This is just dumb.
    No consultation and insufficient notice.

If someone is travelling and their Card was damaged or lost they could still get by with an ATM until they get home.

    • +1

Can you not use digital card for withdrawals ( their site states it as a feature but never used/experienced) it. Their digital cards are almost instant if replacing another card

      • how are you supposed to type a card number for withdrawals?

        • +1

digital card as in via a digital wallet

          • +5

@Settero: again how are you supposed to interact with the ATM with your digital card/wallet.
last ive seen there is no tap and pin option on a WBG atm that ive seen (nor CBA, but correct me if im wrong), unlike ANZ which does.
having a tap&pin would allow you to at least use your phone to interact with the ATM and allow you to get cash card-free
Not having a smart ATM before implementing this is a dumb move.

            • +4

@JDMcarfan: ANZ works on tap and PIN. CBA /Westpac doesn't/didn't require this. Cardless Cash

I also note from CBA site

Cardless Cash will be replaced by QR Cardless in early 2025. Start using QR Cardless today for safe, fast and zero-fee cash transactions via the CommBank app.

Can you easily find a Westpac ATM? they are now few and far between on the Gold Coast. Everything is now atmX.

  • +10

I use it all the time. As I get funny about skimmers

  • +1

SO how do you withdraw cash without a card?

  • +11

    their best feature..

  • +8

I need Cardless Cash as it was the last puzzle piece to finally not have to carry a wallet

But if you don't want to carry a wallet, why bother with cash?

    • +5

      Drug dealers only take cash.

      • +1

        And you know that how?

    • For emergency when a merchant doesn't accept card, or offer discount for cash.

      • And if I get change in coins, the next homeless person or street artist gets it.

      • +1

        What kind of emergency?

        merchant doesn't accept

        Buying drugs?

        offer discount for cash

Any real life example? You know how hard to find a ATM these days?

        • You know how hard to find a ATM these days….

Still had to find one for cardless cash, but now without the convenience of not carrying a card.

        • +6

@boomramada, you never see a sign in restaurants or stores that says x% discount by cash or x.x% card surcharge? Or a sign "Cash only"

If you think cash is like insurance, you don't need it until you really need it … Have some cash as a backup at least …

I can put cash like $20/$50/$100 at the back of my phone between phone and phone case. So if needed, I can take out the cash.

Here are proofs that everyone need to have Cash at least as a backup (news in Australia) :

you never see a sign in restaurants or stores that says x% discount by cash or x.x% card surcharge? Or a sign "Cash only"

Fyi, I haven't carried/used cash for like 5+ years. Last time I used a ATM is to buy a item from fb market place, was struggling to find a ATM near my area, end up getting cash from Aust Post.

Restaurants which I visit, direct debit means no surcharge.

Thanks for the links, I think we are talking about cardless cash withdrawal not use of cash, bit out of the topic yet those events hasn't got me yet.

            • @boomramada: Still related because many people just use their phone for payment through Apple/Google Pay. When people don't bring cash and card, those events could happen like recently Crowd Strike global IT outage that also affected card payments in supermarkets for example (cash only). It's good for me to bring cash at the back of my phone if I don't bring my wallet.

              • @neoleo: I'm not saying it couldn't happen, and I do intend keeping some cash in my disaster survival kit, but there hasn't been an incident that has affected me yet. I have never had a moment in Australia when I felt "wish I had cash". YMMV

Are you saying that Coles & Woolies were still taking cash but not EFTPOS during Crowdstrike outage? I didn't hear that.

                • +1

@SlickMick: Yes, someone said about this in CrowdStrike ozb post previously (cash only).

                  • @neoleo: I don't know why, but I just assumed that cash registers wouldn't work without internet these days.

I feel a bit silly in hindsight.

          • +1

@neoleo: @neoleo Not sure where you are shopping but there are plenty of restaurants that have signs offering discounts for cash payments. As for surcharge, they are required to have a a sign near the point of sale that clearly states any additional fees

            • +1

@mattmel96: Yes, I know there are plenty of restaurants that offer discount for cash even around Sydney City. Card surcharge signs are everywhere …

          • +4

@neoleo: People should at least occasionally use cash just to make sure its always available. this dumb move to cashless for everything is bad.

            • +1

@ProlapsedHeinous: Covid has accelerated this cashless trend … But still CrowdStrike event has proved that cash is still needed as a backup. When there's IT outage, network problem, extremely huge solar storm that could impact electronics, communication etc. then it will show that Cash is still King.

      • +1

how do you carry the cash?

        • You don't have pockets or what?

        • The hooker you give it to does

        • I can put cash like $20/$50/$100 at the back of my phone between phone and phone case. So if needed, I can take out the cash. This is a way if you don't like to carry a wallet.

      • curious when was the last time you had this emergency ?

        • +2

Recent CrowdStrike event (global IT outage) remember? Someone said about a sign "Cash only" in supermarkets during that IT outage, lol.

          • @neoleo: Still, I don't understand the issue here. Take the card with you when you need to take your cash out for a rainy day. "Cardless Cash Feature" not many ppl use it and that costs the business money, I understand why Westpac killing it.

This was a good feature, back in the days when there is less traction with internet banking. I'm not against carrying cash, it's a personal thing for some of you, but you don't need the "Cardless Cash Feature".

  • +2

All the Westpac affiliated ATMs near me have been removed anyway. Cardless withdrawal won’t be missed around here

  • +1

I never try this feature (cardless cash). When I need to withdraw money from ATM, I still use bank cards. Usually I put cash like around $20 to $50 at the back of my phone (between phone and phone case). So, when needed I can just take the cash out from the back of my phone ;-)

    • +4

when needed I can just take the cash out from the back of my phone ;-)

Congratulations! You've effectively turned your phone into an ATM to get cardless cash.

  • +8

I'm with you OP. I use Westpac Cardless Cash and not carry a wallet around. I can't work out anywhere why they have stopped this.

There's not enough of us for Westpac to care I guess…

    • I think because most transactions are card payments or bank transfers. But still a lot of restaurants and stores prefer cash by offering discount for cash or a note that says Cash is King …

      • how to get cash discount >?

        • Pay with cash, not card in many places that has a sign of cash x% discount.

  • +4

lol they're removing a feature I'd never even heard of. It literally must be decades since I used an Australian ATM.

    • +1

You are the reason they are getting rid of this feature. Not enough users to justify the associated costs.

  • cba has it, ive used it once I don't see the point of it anyway

    • +3

It is very useful in some cases. I once let a friend withdraw cash from my account at a CBA atm when he was stranded. Just supply them with the code.
I also don't carry my wallet most days and needed cash a few times for whatever reason.

  • +6

Pfft westpac. What a crap bank. I pay my mortgage to them which includes a premium credit card but they won't give that to me because i don't earn enough. So i pay $$$ to another bank for my credit card. They wouldn't lend me another $3k to get solar on my roof either. My mortgage is only 220k, but they are very greedy there and unreasonable. Of course i going 3k elsewhere and have saved $2k pa off my utility ever since. Westpac is like the government, only there for the wealthy. And with my humble pension I can't even take my mortgage elsewhere.

    • +1

am also stuck with them :(

      • +1

Sadly most banks are the same when you are poor…. doesn't matter how great credit rating, how nice a home or car you have it seems…

  • +4

It's a feature I use around once a week. Normally get some cash after work if I'm going out to dinner to avoid the card surcharge.
Don't want to carry my card and risk being skimmed.

  • They need to reallocate resources to launder money for others which they've worked out it's still profitable to pay the penalty when they get caught and no one at the bank goes to jail

  • This doesn't impact me the slightest. Don't use Westpac services at all. I carry a wallet because I don't wear spandex and lycra.

  • CBA it is.

  • People talk about being skimmed. Is skimming common?

    • Cardless cash cannot be skimmed

      • +1

        Thanks for answering his question

  • +2

Switching to CBA becasue of this. One of the best features. Havent carried a card around for ages.

  • +2

Looks like CBA are also removing careless cash, but they're replacing it with "QR Careless". It hints that there's an unannounced risk recently identified that Westpac and CBA are trying to close. I suspect it's the ability for an anonymous third party to get cash from your account.

    • +2

Looks like CBA are also removing careless cash, but they're replacing it with "QR Careless".

Careless cash does sound kind of risky.

      • +1

        Haha I'm leaving it 😂

    • Possibly as CBA say

We’re strengthening our cash services with QR Cardless

However the new QR system means you cannot remotely help someone withdraw cash as you need to scan the QR code using the CBA app

      • Yeah, that use case is no longer viable. This will be similar to needing an ATM card, but using your phone instead which suits me fine.

I guess you can argue that if someone wants cash, they can open their own account.

        • +1

Yeah, that use case is no longer viable

It was the only time I ever used cardless cash and one of CBAs original marketing points for using it :(

        • handy for kids, if they stuck some where and need some cash with the old cardless way, you just give them the code and the pin and go to the nearest ATM. I think did this once or twice for my kids in span of 5 years

    • Because with cardless cash, others can get cash from your account.

      • anonymously

  • anz ATM lets you tap ur card (using watch or phone' wallet app) and then lets to withdraw cash. which is think is alternative option you can use.

    • That’s a great alternative thank you.

  • This is 100% going to be from increased fraud. Banks suck, sure but fraud and scams are running rampant thanks to the combination of AI, cheap 3rd world scam centers and worse now slave scam centers and of course victims seemingly becoming more susceptible, I'm sure someone is studying this right now but it really does seem like people are getting more prone to being scammed not less

    • This is interesting because the banks only care about fraud when THEY are impacted, otherwise it’s too bad so sad, “privacy”, our hands are tied, “it’s the other bank” etc. etc.

With this one I’m not sure how the bank would be losing out.

Reading some comments here, dear lord, I hope they aren't having sex without condom to avoid spreading it.

Restaurant and stores more and more are offering discount for cash payment.
There is a sushi place in the city that will take +$15 in fees over the weekend if paid by card.

I only have debit card for over a decade which used to be fee free, there is zero benefits to pay by card now.

The next time you are paying for your goods, if they ask you cash or card ( some ask because the terminal doesn't add the fees automatically like other places ), notice the price change when replied with "cash".

    • $15 card fee? I simply wouldn't eat there regardless. It can't be that much better than other sushi places anyway.

  • +3

This feature has saved me on many occasions when i needed cash and didn't have my wallet on my. Very disappointing this feature is being removed.

    • If you use a phone case for your phone, maybe put cash like $50/$100 between your phone and phone case. This is the way without wallet. I do it.

  • -1

I've read all these comments and still don't get what this feature even is

Edit: It's pratically useless for me with my card loaded on my phone via Apple pay

  • Commbank is changing its version next month - it’s only available via QR Code. No idea how that works but that’s what it says when you use an ATM and CC at the moment
