Ferrex 20V Mini Chainsaw (Skin Only) $49.99 @ ALDI Special Buys

420

Special buy for October 19th

15.4cm bar length
4.7m/s saw chain speed
11cm cutting capacity

Not bad for a Ferrex mini chainsaw, if you have their ecosystem but the real bargain will be the Bunnings price match.
I am hoping they will go with this Ozito: https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-pxc-18v-brushless-pruning-…
No guarantees of course, but it seems like the closest item

thanks OP, waiting for the bunning price match.

    • Just be warned that these mini-type of chainsaws are >>>not super strong<<< and can easily break…

      • +2

I have used mine to rip through 20+ overgrown lilli pillies. A solid little small tool. I also keep it at my bedside for unexpected break-ins at night.

        • Ideal for glory kills when defending your family and belongings as it ensures the intruder will drop health pickups and allows you to recover ammo if running low.

  • +2

Yep…. Looking forward to the price match with Ozito hopefully!

    • Don't think we'll see a match with Ozito PXC.

The Ozito Pruning Chainsaw is brushless and alot more expensive.

      • Also more ergonomic

      • There are no guarantees with Bunnings of course, but I think the linked Ozito is the closest item if they do

      • They price matched the brushless multi tool and recipro which were $149 and $169 standard price down to $44 to match a pretty inferior Aldi item, so I wouldn't be surprised if they match the higher spec Ozito item again.

        • +1

That because they were matching brushless to brushless (I posted that deal).

The mini chainsaw is a different scenario, since ALDI one is brushed whereas Bunnings one is brushless.

          • @RichardL: How often does the aldi reciprocating saw come up?

            • @kgree92: I believe once a year, usually around May.

        • +7

I have used the crap out of that recip saw, pack of 5 Diablo pruning blades for $30 and you've got a much better tool than this mini chainsaw IMO. And no messing around with sharpening or replacing chains

          • @AngryAlfred: Which blades did you get? I did a big pruning job with mine but ended up bending the one bad blade that come with it.

            • @EBC: I've been using these 9" ones. They sell a carbide 9" for the same price but the 5 pack ones are more than enough for what I've been doing. They also sell a 5 pack of 12" blades for $50 if you want to go nuts

I've had enough Ozito stuff over the years that I never even bothered to put on their supplied blade haha, I can't imagine it's very good

          • @AngryAlfred: Disagree. Totally different tools for different purposes. Have fun cutting through thinner branches with the recip saw whilst it grabs and wildly shakes the tree and your arms (and the shitty ergonomics to use one handed).

The ozito pruning chainsaw is miles better and so easy to use one handed for its intended purpose (which is pruning things too big for a set of pruners to get at).

I’d be really surprised if they price match Aldi as it’s a very new item to the Ozito range but if they do it’s an insanely good deal.

            • +1

@Yekul: Valid. But it won't grab wildly if you use it properly and put the guard up against what you're cutting, I use ratcheting loppers for the size you're thinking about though. The size of the branches in the Ozito promo pics though? Recip tears through them. I cut them into manageable pieces then put them on the chainsaw stand and cut them down to fireplace sized pieces.

You can put the recip in the ground and cut roots, can't do that with the chainsaw. Then change the blade and go and cut your pipes or whatever it is you want, it's a great tool and much more versatile

              • @AngryAlfred: I've been looking for a ratcheting looper, preferly telesopic as well. Do you have any particular looper recommendations to pick from?

    • Fingers crossed. I'm in the market for one of these for the campervan (to chop up smaller firewood).

  • Is this any good? I have the Aldi ecosystem but not sure of the power of a battery chainsaw?

    • +4

Power is good. Took down a tree with this but this particular Aldi one is poorly designed. You will regret it if you don't send it back

      • Thanks mate, will avoid

  • +3

Good for Halloween trick or treat

  • what does skin only mean

Bought this on the last promo, the trigger safety lock is in a awkward position which mostly requires two hands to turn on the saw. I later went to Bunnings to try out the ozito and found that to be normal and comfortable to operate.

The other thing is small branches continuously get stuck and jamming the saw.

The amount of vibration makes my wrist sore, not sure if that is normal with these.

Would like to return mine under warranty when or if Bunnings price maich.

    • what price did you pay during the last promo

      • Same price as this

Get the Stihl. You won't regret it.

Personally, I use a M18;Fuel Milwaukee Hackzall recipe saw with a Diablo carbine pruning blade but I've used the Stihl and it's pretty good.

  • +1

Not really worth it if you aren't already in the battery system,

I just bought one on ebay with 2 batteries for $35 Delivered!!!

    • Can you share the link?

  • I rarely see Aldi selling their batteries and chargers - why is that? Or am I meant to ask at the counter or something?

    • +1

It's only available a few times throughout the year (usually when they have special buys tools that requires the battery).

This special buy will have battery and chargers for sale. If it not on the shelf, then it's usually kept at the front desk (to prevent theft).

  • If you need more power, this deal from the end of last year - Katana 36V 16" chainsaw with 2x 4Ah batteries is incredible. Price will be higher now but wait for Black Friday, etc. for a deal. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/823106

I have an Aldi 18V chainsaw as part of a hedger/pruner kit and and older corded one, but it was hard going cutting down the trunk of a large crabapple tree (hardwood) but this did it in an hour (it took longer as I did the last cut at ground level). I went out of the Ozito/Aldi battery ecosystem because the deal was so cheap and it was worth it.

There is a good video comparison of some mini chainsaws here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKhFMhaWHDI
The guy picks out the good and bad points and brings up a few points i hadn't thought of.
One important point is that some brands do not have replacement chains available.
So does anyone know if there are replacement chains available for this chainsaw?
