Katana 36volt Garden Tools Deal too Good to be True?

Hi All

I am wondering if anyone has used any of the Katana power tools before?
https://www.katanapowertools.com.au/

The deals on until December 31st on the 36volt Garden Tools seem pretty good.
I'm not sure if it is meant to work this way, but there are bonus codes for the brushless Garden Tools that add free batteries and charger to the 36 volt skins. Then there is a second discount code for 40% off sitewide. Going to the checkout page it looks like you can use both the codes.

Only downside I can see is you only get a single bay charger, which isn't super helpful for tools that take 2 batteries. Also as the blower only comes with 2Ah batteries I expect the runtime would be very short.

Promo code for 40% off sitewide = KATBOX40

So the prices end up as:
36v Brushless 16" Lawnmower = $179.40, Promo Code to add free charger and 2x5Ah batteries: LAWNMOWER22 https://www.katanapowertools.com.au/18v-lawnmower
36v Brushless Turbo Blower = $89.40, Promo Code to add free charger and 2x2Ah batteries: BLOWER22 https://www.katanapowertools.com.au/18v-turbo-blower
36v Brushless Trimmer & Brush Cutter = $119.40, Promo Code to add free charger and 2x4Ah batteries: TRIMMER22 https://www.katanapowertools.com.au/18v-line-trimmer-and-bru…
36v Brushless 16" Chainsaw = $119.40, Promo Code to add free charger and 2x4Ah batteries: CHAINSAW22 https://www.katanapowertools.com.au/18v-chain-saw

Seems like a no brainer?

  • I can only see 18v gear on that site?

    • Yeah the descriptions on their website are dumb - for their brushless garden gear the titles say "18v" but you click on them and the descriptions say "2x18v". also in the specifications it says the motor voltage is 36v..

Pretty sure its only the garden gear with "Brushless" in the title that is 36V.

  • Looks like a five year warranty as well if you register online.

  • They don't come with the batteries and charger though, why are saying they do?

They do once you use the other code listed next to each item above.

      • Oh yeah, man I'm pretty dumb.

Looks like a great deal to me OP. Shame I don't need any of it myself right now.

Ordered a trimmer, blower and chainsaw. Not sure how good they can be for the price, can always turn all the batteries into a something.

  • Thanks OP. Seems like a fantastic deal. Great find.

  • This is ridiculously cheap. I ordered a mower and a trimmer/brushcutter with the free batteries even though I already have another brand's version of these tools.

  • Im struggling here too! My entire ecosystem is Ozito but they havent had a good mower deal regently and the fact that Ozito batteries arent interchangeable with the Katana ones makes it much harder to decide; also noticed this doesnt have a telescopic handle.

    So my gear already arrived!
Shipped yesterday evening and arrived this morning.
I bought the mower, line trimmer and blower.

    First impressions:
In general the plastics seem fairly cheap, but the motors seem powerful. The fit and finish isn't perfect, there are a few sharp edges in some spots, but only in bits you aren't likely to touch anyway.

One part I am a bit worried about is the mower wheels. It wouldn't surprise me if they break at some point, as they just seem like cheap ABS plastic. The connectors that the batteries connect too also feel pretty flimsy, so don't shove the batteries in too violently :) Other than that the mower seems pretty decent. I tried the mower on some long grass that hasn't been mowed in a month, and the rpm's barely dropped. I also like that the blade reaches close to the edge of the mower, unlike the Ozito I looked at where the wheels stuck out a fair way past the blade. Height adjust is easy to use - level 2 seems about right for my lawn. The fabric catcher is pretty small capacity, but I think the Ozito ones are also fairly small. You can't adjust the length of the handle, but you can adjust the angle of it to make it the right height. The mower is pretty light though so it isn't difficult to manoeuvre.

The blower seems ok and is plenty powerful. I also have the 36v Ozito blower (that I will be donating to my sister :) ). Comparing the two, the Ozito Blower and Katana Blower seem pretty matched in power in their turbo modes, which makes sense as their specs are very similar (820m3/h I think?). In general they seem to sound and perform quite similarly. The Katana blower controls are a bit annoying because they use cheap clicky buttons (like you get on cheap remote controls) rather than a trigger. It means if you want to turn the blower off for a second or two, like I often do if I'm trying to blow leaves in a certain direction, then you have to press the on/off button. But then when you press the on/off button again it will restart at the slowest speed. So basically your thumb needs to do a bit of a dance between the on/off button and the turbo button. I think I'll get the hang of it, but a simple trigger and speed selector wheel would have been much better…

The line trimmer seems to have plenty of power, more than I will need. It isn't variable speed or anything - just on and off. For some reason the grips on the line trimmer are just hard plastic, not rubberised at all which is a bit odd, but it is balanced enough that you don't need to grip it too tightly anyway. The line trimmer is quite big and long. It is a bit unwieldy being so long, but I think it is designed this way to make it balanced. The 4ah or 5ah batteries balance out the motor pretty well. You definitely need to use the shoulder strap though because there is no other way to easily hold it.
I noticed the line trimmer spool says "Ferrex" on it. The spool looks exactly like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFM_oV5m5m8 . The manual says it uses 1.6mm line, but looking at the head I don't see any reason why you couldn't replace it with thicker line.

Oh and a final note, the Mower and the Line Trimmer both have probably a 2 or 3 second startup delay from when you press the trigger to when the motors start. Not really an issue on the mower, could be slightly annoying on the line trimmer.

    • I was also looking to get one of these. This info is very helpful, thanks. What about the battery life? Any good?

My question was going to be ‘who supports them?’ But I went to the website and saw ‘distribution by kinchrome’ so that was a little of a relief but it’s still an unknown in a market that has good support from well known brands. If it doesn’t sell as well as they want there’s a good chance your battery tools may become obsolete.

When masters kicked off Stanley was great value but it faded away quickly once masters went belly up. Bunnings had GMC for a few years, prior to ozito and it became orphaned. I had some GMC tools that became useless once the battery died - although a battery adaptor did help keep them going for a bit.
