I have s21 ultra. Is camera comparable to ultra range of samsung phones?
Not at all. I have a fold 4, the camera is very average and much worse than the s21/22 ultra
I had S20+ prior to Fold 4 and even the S20+ was superior to Fold 4.
Ultra better.
23U best cam in the ultra series so far
Better than the s24U?
Apparently the reviews suggest they downgraded the camera on s24U in favor of other tech in the device
@easternculture: Well zoom dropped didnt it?
@BusMan247: Read a few reviews and s23U either wins or ties with s24U cam with the various tests
@easternculture: yeah agree, the s23 ultra has a 10x camera, where the s24 ultra has a 5x only.
Not really. The camera is very mediocre at best - basically the same as the equivalent "Normal" Galaxy S22 model (not the Ultra).
I had a fold 4 and the phone developed an issue with opening flat after 1 year of use. This is a known issue on the fold 4.
I personally wouldn't recommend it as it's a hassle to get it fixed by Samsung. I ended getting a full refund since it was easier than doing a RMA though samsung.
Agreed, known issue pre Fold5 I believe. I would only consider the 5+.
I have this issue. Issue occurred just after the warranty period. Cost $700 to repair. Don't get Fold4.
Yep same happened with my fold 3. 800 to repair. Never again
fold 6 fixed it. The previous issue was due to the 2 brushes in the hinge to prevent dust. 4 and 5 have the same problem. Fold 6 has completely removed them.
And a company like samsung could not figure it out until the 4th gen of the device? And not only that 4th gen had a new issue which carried on until gen 5 and now 6 is supposedly fixed? Yeah nah
Fold6 is now IP48. I think that's the reason why they can remove the dust brush in the hinge.
@MichaelAU: That brush was to prevent ingress of the sand in first place! And the IP48 rating prevents against 1mm-sized foreign objects and larger which for a sand particle is huge. Most sand is comfortably below that so you arent as protected as you think you are
@dealsucker: Anyway, Samsung has removed those brushes from Fold 6. The previous issue won't happen in the current generation. At least they can still stay flat after a long time of use.
@dealsucker: Mate i work 10.hours a day insatlling pipes in trenches rain and shine and my fold 5 has handled it all. The thing has copped water, mud and a heap of sand and still no issues. I cant complain.
I had a similar issue (+inner screen protector peeling) for my Fold 4. I was a couple of months outside the 2 year warranty. I brought it into a physical Samsung store and they repaired both issues without charge.
The sales rep there said there is technically ACL which covers it for another 2 years arguably given it was a $2.5K device at launch.
On the contrary, when I was living outside a metro centre and dealt with their online team, they wanted to pre-authorise the full cost for a screen replacement ($800) before I could send it in for warranty repair.
TLDR: if you're living in a large metropolitan city with a physical Samsung store, I have nothing but praise for the way the repairs were dealt with. Avoid foldables in general if you're not.
Having played with the 5, 6 and ultimately settling with the Pixel 9 Pro Fold now, I think this is a pretty decent price. However, I would recommend splurging for the 6 even if the hardware updates are incremental, purely for longer software support. It's often on sale for just a few hundred dollars more. Never ever pay RRP.
What do you mean by "another 2 years"?
2 years manufacturer's warranty + 2 years ACL coverage for a $2.5K phone. Matches it's software support period of 4 years of android updates.
ACL is always a grey zone but the above argument makes sense and is what the staff employee told me.
@plasmapuff: If I purchase the phone today, is it still covered in 2028?
@MichaelAU: You'd definitely get 2 years manufacturer's warranty. ACL would be harder given it was a device on clearance and software support would have ended.
ACL leaves a lot of grey in its interpretation and implementation.
@plasmapuff: I had the hinge issue with no speaker sound after 2 years.
Is it covered under ACL (between the 2nd and 4th years)?
I sent Samsung the phone for repairs, they came back with quote of $800 as it was out of warranty.
@congo: Technically yes. I'd recommend going into the store. I had a similar initial fob off when I requested a service through the online Samsung support website.
Enforcing ACL with a manufacturer or retailer who isn't playing ball unfortunately requires lots of time submitting complaints to the ACC etc.
https://www.reddit.com/r/australia/comments/6074ch/mobile_ph…
@plasmapuff: Thanks, I will give it a go.
@plasmapuff: I suspect you mean ACCC and not ACC aka The Association of Corporate Counsel.
The ACCC does not deal with individual ACL claims.
Also to clarify the majority of ACL laws apply directly to the business you purchase the goods from. If a business does fob off an individual then the individual can only take legal action against the business to enforce there ACL.
The majority of government agencies can not enforce ACL on the behalf of individuals.
@congo: Yes, you need to always push with ACL for products out of warranty, that you would expect to work longer. E.g it's not reasonable to spend 5k on a tv and it to fail after 2.5 years. Even if it's out of warranty, you simply tell them you want it repaired as Aus consumer law covers me…most people dont know, or are too lazy to go down this path.
I have claimed this on various electronics and even cars.
wait hold up - my fold3 was within the 2 years manufacturer's warranty (did not purchase Samsung Care) when it had a major issue last year (black screen thru the middle and right side no longer works). I dropped it off at their physical Sydney Townhall storefront and their tech came back a few days later with the damage assessment report quoting $900 for the repair and had to kick up a fuss for them to "waive" the $900 repair fee. My screen has the same issue again and is now close to the 3 year mark. What should i tell them when i bring it down to their physical store, that i was told by a Samsung store rep that ACL covers it for up to 4 years?
Yep mine failed just before the 2-year mark so I luckily had it covered under warranty.
Repair itself was good but the full process took ~10 days. Luckily had an old phone to use in the interim but it was still a pain.
Just took my Fold 4 in to get the battery changed under warranty after owning for 18 months. They reckon the hinge wasnt opening correctly so they replaced the folding screen, battery and entire frame all for free. The phone is like brand new again, talk about a win.
I took my phone to a Samsung store in person to get it repaired. By the sounds of some of these other comments though the outcome might of been different if i tried to organise it online. The rep in store said that despite the warranty only being 12 months, one would expect a phone of this value to last significantly longer and therefore would still be covered for repairs.
When going to a Samsung service better to call the online number and ask for the authorised repairer instead which allows you to do walk-ins.
Samsung stores or dropping them off at HN will result in sending them off to a repair centre whereas the authorised repairers will order the spare parts and repair on the spot.
Differences between the 4, 5 and 6 aren't huge….i beg to differ. I had the 4 and now have the 6 and the difference is very noticeable in weight, front screen size, shape and quality of the camera to name a few. For the price though this is good value.
Differences between the 4, 5 and 6 aren't huge
I have 5 but on reddit i read far more issues with 4 than 5.
Do not buy this for 900plus dollars
hate this phone - had it for like 4 months before the fold screens broke. Samsung would not repair due to scratches on the body. Most expensive brick ever.
Samsung would not repair due to scratches on the body
Tell me about it. Fold 4 developed hinge issues, Samsung noticed normal wear and tear scratches, would not repair. Filed complaint with ACCC, got a Fold 5 at no cost.
Glad to hear this. I am going through exactly same situation where they denied a resoluton to fix the folding screen. Can you advice what happened after you raised ACCC complaint. how did it go and how u ended up getting it resolved? I have raised a ACCC complaint now.
After raising it with ACCC, I raised it again with Samsung customer care and provided them with the case number. After knowing that I am really pursuing this, they started giving sh*t about it. Although nothing promising at first and then the ACCC case manager reached out to me about 3 weeks later and mentioned that they contacted Samsung and that I should receive the further communication from Samsung directly.
In about 3 days, received a call which I didn't pick up, followed by an email from Samsung offering me a resolution. When called back, from memory I think they proposed two solutions, being,
But since I've suffered issues with Fold 4 prior, I opted to get a refund but then simply asked the rep if they are also willing to offer Fold 5 as I got to know that the issues with hinges were fixed in Fold 5. And they came back positive on my request. Received Fold 5 within a week with a bigger storage (512GB).
No issues with fold 5 year down.
Best luck with your quest!!
@Zapwap: Great thanks for the details. Really helps me push this further. Hopefully works out for me as well.
Damn I want these phones to be affordable and they are almost there. I'd go to about 600.
For what it's worth I bought an "as new" refurb Z Fold 5 512GB from an eBay seller for $965 delivered during a recent eBay 17% off sale. I was sceptical about it as new, but yeah it was mint, not a single mark on it anywhere and it was "like new". I got the Samsung case for $4, the front screen protector for $5, and the lens protectors for $5 from JB. The retail on the three accessories was around $140.
I've been super happy with it, at first I was in two minds whether I wanted a Flip or a Fold, but have been very happy with the Fold.
Second this, got the fold 4 for around 700 refurb with ebay code, arrived in mint condition (to my eyes).
Refurbs often have lost their IP rating. A moist fart in the vicinity and kiss your phone goodbye. I learnt this the hard way.
4 has known hinge issues though. Buy at own risk.
Yep Wouldn't touch anything in samsung under flip 5 or fold 5, my screencover on my fold 4 has lifted again and this time it will cost me 5 onwards is free.
The difference between the 4, 5 and 6 are smallish but definitely noticeable. I upgraded from 3 to 4 to 5 and always noticed and welcomed the improvement. Went back to normal S24U though as the weight gave me bad RSI.
Had the fold 4 and had hinge issues within 14 months which caused a dead inner screen. Samsung were terrible to deal with. They didn't have any in stock (that meaning refurbished, not new) to replace it. Took nearly 3 months to get refunded. Eventually got a Fold 6 and so far so good but it's only been a few months. If this one craps itself, I won't be getting another Fold.
16 months in and no issues with mine yet. But I know somebody who had their front screen for on them…
How is this comparing to the Chinese options?
warranty is more important
Privacy is more imp
My Fold 4 developed an intermittent issue where the internal screen wouldn’t turn on when opened, then it stopped working completely. I figured I’d wait until the new flagship was out then I’d do an under repair warranty, and while waiting I’d just get by with the unfolded screen.
The phone then forced my hand when the SIM reader completely stopped working. Phone was never dropped. Lost faith in the Fold series after that.
Samsung replaced it under warranty and I sold it as new afterwards. Haven’t looked back.
This or the new Huawei fold
You mean their new tri Fold
Huawei fold is crap. Too thick folded, too heavy at almost 300g, too expensive, too big to hold one-handedly and too gimmicky. Screen folds outward is asking for issues (and many issues they did have). As far as I know, there is no protective case for it.
It's a hard pass, unless you are Chinese and get a kick out of owning a Huawei and don't mind paying the patriotism tax.
I think they are referring to this:

Samsung is not worth the price, Oppo, Xiaomi, Huawei all the same with small differences.
Price?
