This oil meets the difficult spec of MB 229.5. This is an absolute bargain.
What does this mean?
It's a certification that's very difficult to reach.
If a company doesn't pay to be certified they won't be listed as MB 229.5 compliant but it's just a very sophisticated oil package.
Oil quality isn't that big of a deal but that's only because most people sell or damage their cars at low kms. If you care about long term ownership or have a dodgy engine model it's good to keep in mind. This is just a good price for a full synthetic oil in general so the solid certification is just nice.
Thanks for the insight. I had no idea.
Agree! Though some oil says meets mb229.5 spec if they don't pay licence fee.
In (at least) 4 cylinder MB engine M270/274, 229.5 spec means 25k km oil changes, which helps a lot of you drive lots like me

Anyone with experience using any-oil that meet MB-Approval 229.5: prefer mechanic &/or detailed response.
@TrulyUnicorn: interesting comments.
May be it's up to EACH-users to do their own research (& will come across lots of technical-stuff that is often over-the-top, lost-in-translation, can't be verify etc), observe the behavior of their engine while using oil that meet MB 229.5 & EACH draw their OWN-conclusion….whatever their criteria ?
BASE-oil: 'full-synthetic' & 'synthetic' have NO-meaning in engine-oil-science. Words were 1st created by MARKETING-Castro dept decade ago, which fool consumers & now MANY-oil-makers still label their products with similar words. Many oil makers don't even tell users how much of the Group I, II, or III blend they use…confidential? I lost count @ the # of times I hear the word 'synthetic' are use my people implying that 'synthetic' oil are superior, lol.
This or castrol?
Ofcourse not Castrol just from my experience
Buy whatever meets your certification from the manufacturer.
Castrol is owned by arch-rival BP
this is a great price…. I've already stocked up on oil atm though
A few years ago we would regularly get full synth oil for under 20 bucks, now 33 is an absolute bargain. What's up with that? Also prices went up before covid I think, so don't think it was that
Inflation. $1.20 for petrol was a regular price years ago but $1.60 is an absolute bargain now.
On the rare occasion I need it I find it under 1.50, but this oil increase seemed to happen overnight one day
middle east issues / covid / ukraine war basically… uncertainty leading to high prices, mixed in with some corporate greed.
There is large disparities between fully synthetic oil certifications. This is one of the reasons manufacturers have been able to push services out to 15,000k and more.

It's rare & need to be lucky-> https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15733494/redir
This or penrite (currently on sale for $45 at SCA)
How strict should one be with matching oil spec with car engine spec? Asking for a friend!
A bit insensitive don't you think?
Depends on your location. Im in darwin so thankfully have pretty high minimum tempretures. Helps me just a little.
Anyone know if I can use this for my two cars:
1. 2007 Toyota Camry Altise
2. 2013 Prius V Hybrid
I believe 0w-20 is recommended wondering if 5w-30 would work?
The Camry would likely take anything, so long as you're between 0w-10 and 15w-40. Those engines sometimes tend to have big oil leaks, in which case go thicker.
You can check your cars on the lube guide. https://www.datateck.com.au/Lube/ShellAU/
On my quick search, this oil is compatible with both of your cars, but please check for yourself.
Also, you can compare oil specs stated by Shell for this oil (5W-30, API SN Plus/SN, ACEA A3/B4) against your owners manuals.
The API spec is backward compatible. For example, your 2007 Camry manual might say API SL spec or later, and if so, API SN Plus will be fine.
Thanks both for the reply! I’ve put my rego into the repco site and apparently this oil doesn’t suit - would you say the repco site is reliable in matching specs?
Have used 5w30 oils on a few camrys without issues although they were low KMs cars. I was also thinking of getting this shell oil for a 2014 Camry, checked on the shell site and it came up as the last choice of six oils they recommended. I am going to pass this time and just wait and go for a petrol only oil. If I was changing my oil tomorrow I might be persuaded.
@maccam01: This is the entry-level Shell oil, hence the price.
Its Group 3 base stock where Shell Ultra is Group 4 derived from Natural Gas. This means HX8 is cheaper to produce.
Does this matter? That’s up to you. I don’t feel it matters in everyday motoring with standard cars.
A Nissan engineer recommended “Use any Synthetic oil and change your oil frequently (5000m/8000km).”
As for it being lower in Shell’s list in the lube guide, they want you to use their premium and higher margin products first.
@dkausa: Being pedantic here, GTL (gas to liquid base oil used in Shell Ultra) as Group 3+, while it has similar properties to PAO, API classifies only PAO as Group 4.
HX8 is likely Group 3 XHVI base oil is made out of slack wax.
The Russian oil club forum suggests that the additive pack is similar to Shell Ultra - https://www.oil-club.ru/forum/topic/38001-shell-helix-hx8-sy… , but it is info from pre-covid and for their local stock. So, YMMV, but it sure does look like a great oil, even if it is not 100% Ultra.
@systema: Appreciate the further clarification.
I would trust the oil manufacturer to have more accurate info than Repco.
This or Canola?
i prefer wd40
Baby oil, worked for diddy.
I pick mustard oil.. but olive oil is also healthy for your engine
As FYI, this is not VW or Audi certified long life oil. Best to look elsewhere if you require.
I'm guessing it's mostly due to the oil burning issue? Not fun getting excessive carbon buildup…
Price beat at SuperCheap. (I find Repco has a lot of wa#ker staff)
SCA has also a lot of them
I can’t find it at Supercheap Auto
Good price for great oil
