Hi all,

First post after being a member for years.

Was finding a replacement for my lost Galaxy S9 Tablet. Had been in love with the galaxy tablet but was worried about my personal info/ bank info after losing the tablet so I am going back to the Apple route.

Was struggling between the M2 or M4 pro but once I found this deal I just couldn't justify the M4 model.

There are some larger storage version & 13' inches version available (not sure if those are good deals or not as I haven't looked into the larger version. Can do a few quick searches if you are keen.

https://www.costco.com.au/Computers/iPads-Tablets/iPads/Appl…

Hope it helps :).

You can factory reset your samsung remotely if it gets network connection. If you had a password or biometric lock you should be safe anyway.

    • +16

Yeah, I don't understand how "going back to Apple" solves OP's issue, especially since this deal's version is wifi-only.

      • +1

An excuse for a new machine.

    • +1

Lol is this some Apple astroturf account?

  • -5

Since the m4 came out. No reason to buy m2 unless 50% discount

    • +2

Why? What's so special with it?

      • +11

A tandem oled screen and double the storage, since the m4 iPad 11 can be gotten for $1350~ with Apple aoc and 10% off Apple gift cards this is a hard sell

        • Where are there 10% off Apple gift cards? ..or was that just a previous deal you're referring to?

          • @Mortal Krumpet: Supermarkets often give 20x points. Not directly 10% off but effectively the case if you shop at Colesworth (and you can get even more value from the points if you convert from EDR/Flybuys to Qantas/Velocity and redeem award seats).

        • 35% more expensive, not sure it's 35% more better though.

          • +2

@GregRust: This one has a regular LCD screen, while the M4 uses OLED (in fact, it’s two OLED displays fused together). That alone makes a big difference.

          • +2

@GregRust: Agree. Hard to justify the M4 even with the OLED panel, as the M2 Pro LCD is likely one of the best LCD panels on the market.

            • @niknikniknik: This likely does have one of the best LCD panels. However, it still has all the drawbacks of an LCD screen:

              • Lower contrast ratio due to the inability to produce true blacks.
              • Potential backlight bleeding.
              • Visible light leakage in dark scenes, reducing immersion.
              • Thicker design due to multiple layers in the display.
              • @fastnet: Absolutely agree that the OLED is technically superior. Just don't agree that you get the utility out of that which equates to a 300to500 dollar price premium. I guess for those who use it for daily work, but for myself and certainly most around me, despite the best intentions to use it for work, it quickly becomes a Netflix/YouTube machine.

              • @fastnet: But it’s MiniLED? so those problems should be non-issues for most users? I’m not sure though I don’t have one. Could anyone with experience please chime in?

so after reading @Kazusa‘s comment, I did some research and Apple indeed removed the MiniLED display from the M2 generation of iPad Pro for some reason..

                • @buyer-123: It's not mini-LED, it’s just a regular LED backlight. Only the 12.9" model has a mini-LED backlight.

Except the M2 is already an incredibly powerful chip. M4 would obviously be better, new form factor too, but how much is the smaller M4 Pro eh? I bet it's more than $999.

      • It’s not about the chip

        • -1

So it's thinner and the screen is a little better and such, so what. How much is the equivalent M4 iPad Pro?

      • I had an M2 and now am using an M4. And I use(d) them for work tasks, not so much video consumption.
I think I would go the M2 to be honest, just for the cash diff.
The M4 has a better oled screen, the pencil pro is better than the pencil 2. So all good reasons for a higher price.
On paper the M4 is heaps faster, but not something you notice. Maybe soon as AI features need more grunt and a bigger machine learning sector on the SOC. But the M2 is still faster than most other tablets.

Now, I changed jobs and the M2 was owned by my former workplace so had to give it up, while the M4 was a personal purchase even though I still do use it for work.

The M4 is a better machine, but if you are stretched for $ you won’t regret an M2.

        • I actually got the M2 Air because I wanted to use the Pencil Pro, and didn't want to buy a new Magic Keyboard case. It looks basically the same as my old 12.9 inch Pro.

    • +12

the ipads don’t even make use the power of the m1 lol except for benchmarks, for 99% of use cases you won’t be able to tell the difference between m1 and m4

      • +2

Exactly. When the M4 came out this year I sold my iPad Pro 12.9 inch M1 for an upgrade. Tried it on in store everything looks damn great but function wise literally no difference.
After having a few months without iPad, I don’t even think I need one anymore. Money saved.

        • Yep tablet market is dead 90% people dont need to upgrade their 3 years old tablet.

          • @CyberMurning: Might be dead for adults, but it's a genius strategy to get kids locked in to the Apple ecosystem, then migrated to an iPhone once they're old enough.

            • @l o l: While I agree that all that power isn’t being used via ipadOS, I find I use the iPad for just about everything.
It has meant I haven’t needed to upgrade my laptop as often, and I only take the iPad pro when travelling.

              • @entropysbane: You got some good points. I used to do the same but always worried about what if I needed to do some proper laptop tasks that iPad is not good at, then I had to carry both, bloody heavy.

                • +1

                  @NoBargainNoLife: Exactly :)
At which point I wonder why would I even bring the iPad, if the laptop + phone have it all covered?

But different lines of work have different requirements, of course.

If I knew how to draw anything other than a poor stick man, I'd probably love to use an iPad.

Note that these models have neither OLED or mini led so might not be the best for nighttime viewing

    • -4

It’s not that bad, we are all caught up with buzzwords like OLED and MiniLED, but the reality is most people don’t find it much of a difference. Same with their magic stand and pencil… Apple is good at marketing…

      • +14

if you don't find much of a difference between OLED and LCD I don't know what to say.

        • +11

Not saying you can’t see a difference. My TV is a 83 inch OLED.

My point is about us being caught up with the fact it is OLED, MiniLED, (MicroLED in the future), but does it really matter for our use case?

In Apple’s words, you absolutely need the newest iPad each year. The reality is the M1 chip was faster than any software that could realistically use it in the iPad, the standard LED was good enough for most people, and size isn’t much different.

The commenter above suggesting they would pay twice the price for a M4 model demonstrates my point. How could you possibly justify that price, unless you absolutely needed the colour accuracy for work?

          • +1

@ozbking: I'm still on a gen 7 ipad from 5 years ago so I don't think apple's marketing has worked too much on me. But I have seen firsthand the difference between OLED and previous generations and it's pretty striking.

I don't think I'll partake in this go-round, probably not for another 2 or 3 years or until software updates stop coming, but to suggest the screen technology doesn't matter is pretty silly

  • Is it me or do they not do cellular models at all at Costco?

    • I couldn't find any either.

    • My M4 is the first I have got without cellular. Previously for work I needed the GPS, and work paid for the cellular service.

Seriously, unless you are doing something that needs precision GPS, like say natural disaster response, hot spotting off your mobile is all you need.

  • how do you spend your costco points? just wonder? never tried.

    • Are you talking about points that you get for having an Executive membership? Once you get them you can just use it at the register. They asked us if we wanted to use it as soon as it was available.

      • yep executive membership. ahhh ok so how do you know how much points you have? in the app?

        • Yeah, just go down a bit. Check Rewards.

How does this model compare to IPad Air 11in?

    • +7

Compared to the M2 iPad Air. The m2 Pro has 120hz (60Hz on the Air), FaceID (compared to touchID), 1 extra GPU core, extra LIDAR sensor, extra Ultrawide camera.
The M2 Air does support the Apple Pencil Pro, while the M2 Pro only supports the 2nd generation Apple Pencil.

      • And extra speakers. Air should be priced at least $300 less than this pro.

    • air is rubbish

  • is this lcd screen?

    • Yes and the 11” never got the miniLED screen. The tandem OLED is a massive upgrade in the newer model IMO

Has anyone tried officeworks price-beat on this one yet ?

    • +1

Officeworks don’t sell that model anymore

  • mb this is pro not air.

  • Had been in love with the galaxy tablet but was worried about my personal info/ bank info after losing the tablet so I am going back to the Apple route.

Did you disable device encryption or something? No security PIN/biometric authentication?

  • does anyone know if any costco still has this one?
