Will I Notice Moving from 12GB to 8GB of RAM for General Use?

Got a tired, broken s21 Ultra (my sons actually) and thinking to get a near new in box s23 Ultra. Both are 256GB, but the s23 ultra has 8GB ram.

Is that noticeable in real life use? Using social apps, camera, maps … you know, normal stuff.

The S23 Ultra is around $900 so seems OK for a still recent phone. The 512/12 models in great condition (and Australia models) are $1500 or more … don’t want to pay that much.

Was going to get the phone for me, and give my son my old s21 ultra.

So will it be fine being 8GB ram, new updates say something about AI, will it still be ok?

Anyone done this, or have the s23 ultra 256/8 …what do you think of it?

  • Will I Notice The 4GB Less?

    no, I have a S23 Ultra 256GB/8GB which I got at release

    • Have you been happy with it. No issues with lower memory that you notice?

Sister has the 512/12 one and really likes it … I think the s21 ultra is still pretty good.

even that much of RAM is too much lol :D I upgraded from S10 Snapdragon, so I miss SpO2 sensor, 3.5mm jack and FM radio
why don't you wait few months and look for S25 Ultra next March or so. You can get it cheaper form education store

        • I don’t really want to spend that much on a new phone, not even edu prices. Can’t really wait that long either. Thinking after s25 is out s24 will still be too expensive.

I bought two s21 ultra and s21 plus on edu when they came out.
One ultra has a broken back glass and front screen flashes green often even when the screen is off.

            @PVA: Up until late 2023 …
I was getting about using a phone with 4GB ram.

hey, even 2GB almost suits your use case -
(at 2GB just need to watch out for some apps - where DEVS have used shortcuts when coding - even with simple apps) +++ watch what apps running in background.

CPU is another thing to consider as well … But any recent 2022+ model will do your requirements.

But yeah 8GB == overkill even for your usage.

            • @simplystu: Thanks. I’ve ordered the phone.

  • Well it's not a Mac so 8GB is fine….

  • No idea who did a Poll, I know I didn’t.

Probably twix (a power user). It's a valid edit in my opinion.

This can be managed with "Hibernator" app (very useful and powerful). Not all apps need to run in the background all day. Also disable data in the settings for apps that you think don't need data especially background data. Use adblocker app like Adguard (paid) or NextDNS etc. (system wide) to block ads, trackers, etc. Certain ads could make the phone feel laggy deliberately like coin mining for example. I still use phone with 8 GB RAM and my phone is under $500. Most people don't need expensive phone as mostly for general uses like music, video, social apps, camera, etc. Photo quality can improved by using gcam mod app (Google camera, install from celsoazevedo website).

I don't know about AI in Samsung phone as I don't use Samsung. But there are other AI apps that can be used in any phone.

  • 8gb is the bare minimum for today. if you keep your phone for more than a year, i would get the 12gb.

average person keeps there phone 2.5 years.

im weird, i buy a new phone every year on release day, and just pass it down to my kids. a win win for the family, lol.

  • move to a 24, more AI
easier to remove parting family members from old shots.

easier to remove parting family members from old shots.

Does that happen often to you?

Handy to have, my IP15pm feels like stone-age compared to the S24.

I don’t want to pay near 3 times the price.

  • If you are OCD who needs to have 60 tabs open then yes, otherwise no
I am currently typing on a 4GB pentium laptop (AWESOME BATTERY LIFE, 17hrs when new) on win10H no lag or issues whatever, firefox with 4-6 tabs open most of the time, but I know it's limitations and it won't multitask well, but for general use it's great.

  • IIRC android (or One UI not surew hich) has a feature where they use some of your storage and convert it to 'virtual ram' so it gives you a little boost.

But even without the virtual ram, 8gb and 12gb won't be noticeable at all in your day to day usage.
