Is there a competition to see who can make the ugliest car ever? This must go close.

  • Mg4 still has it pipped for value and spec

    • +3

      Yes and no.

Specs wise, the Oras get a 360 camera, and basically the full safety suite (rear cross, blind spot, lane keep etc) over the MG Excite
Front 4 way electric seats + plus some other bits.
Ora has no Nav though but wireless Carplay
And a bloody centre armrest/cup holder in rear (dont know why this is missing across all the Mg4 range, especially when you have kids)
      No map pockets in Excite

You have to jump into the Essence+ to get a reasonable comparable spec.

So for our family, spec wise the Ora was a safety and practicality win except for the boot.
But still large enough for shopping and school runs!

      • The MG4 has hub caps on steel wheels, halogen interior lights and no rear AC vents. It's like the basic base of all EV's.

      • But no AA!

      • FWD vs RWD. I take the mg4 any day. If you can’t park a small hatchback then you NEED the 360 degree camera.

        • +1

"Most people" who buy and drive cars either dont know or dont care around FWD/RWD. I would prefer RWD myself from a sporty side too.
In terms of features, my wife likes a 360 camera feature. Yet doesnt care about the driven wheels - its an appliance.

Both of us can park a car well, but even myself, do find situations where a 360 camera has come in handy and made life easier.

          Each to their own!

  • So extended range is $1k cheaper than standard. That's a big oversight.

Loophole detected, time to OzBargain them.

I might drive it if they paid me 34K

  • -1

    Yuck.

Tossing up between this and the MG4.

In terms of the companies, which is less likely to pack up shop in Australia and leave you stranded in terms of warranty?

    GM vs GWM?

    • +5

      GM definitely packed up shop

    • Tossing up between this and walking everywhere.

Why do all EVs have to look hideous

    • +5

Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. If all look hideous to you then I'd suggest seeing an ophthalmologist.

      • +2

        Or a psychologist

      • -1

There's a close correlation between people with ugly cars and ugly wives

      • Or just have taste ? Looks like a blind kid tried to draw a Fiat 500

    • +4

      To reduce the drag coefficient.

      • +2

It does look like it's in drag doesn't it.

    • +2

Which cars don't look hideous to you?

      • Alfa Giulia, VW Arteon, Mazda 6 to name a few sedans

  • Unlike many others I like their styling and interior.
I really wanted to get one of these, but the screen flicker put me off.
Go and sit in one and look at the monitors with the video camera or a high shutter speed to see what I mean.

If they fixed the screen I would buy it in a heartbeat.

    • Low refresh rate? Surely anything over 30fps shouldn't be that perceivable to the human eye

      • It is absolutely perceivable to a moving eye, particularly at night

      • refresh rate is measured in hz

        • A screen with a 30Hz refresh rate can display a new image 30 times per second (30fps). I think most screens are at least 60Hz, so it may be the operating system that is limited to 30fps while the screen may be capable of more.

    • -1

Why do you need a high refresh rate when you should be looking at the road?

      • +3

Flickering screens are a distraction and source of irritation, disorientation, or even seizures for those that are sensitive to it.
        https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/6891478

Looking at the road, unless you are in a trance or worse, requires at a minimum, scanning eye movement.
Turning lights on and off, when perceived when eyes are moving as "saccade" creates a phantom array of images which the brain needs to process.
Not all brains process this information in the same manner.

        https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-023-38477-z

Flicker of LED can cause irritation, discomfort, disoriention, headaches and more.

    • +1

I have one and no screen flicker at all

      • That's great to hear - the one I saw was built Aug 2023.
What build date is your Ora?

  • -1

    Nice car, and well rated.

  • +1

Exterior styling looks like an AI merged a stack of different cars from 10-20 years ago. Does not look like it will age well at all to me. Value wise it seems decent though, providing it lasts long enough.

  • +2

Styling on this car really growing on me. It's not trying to be all angular and sporty like the MG4 (which it still fails at) because it's not a sports car. It's a nice little city car, looks interesting and has more charm than a lot of newer cars nowadays

if I was in the market for a small EV, this would be high on my list

  • +3

Standard range now $33,900 with a home charger included.
    https://www.gwmanz.com/au/config/ora

  • +4

Look like they have sweetened the deal by adding charging station for standard and extended range

  • +2

GW can discount more. It's selling $20000-25000 in china.

  • +1

MG4 is a bargain. In WA the excite 51 works out to $27500 on road after rebate of 3500.
However the best deal ever was the Peugeot E-2008 that dropped from 65k on road to $40k on road. That sold out in 3 days unfortunately but that EV was full of premium stuff like massage heated seat, panaramic sunroof, 3d dash and loads of cool displays on both screens etc.
Hope the new model E2008 has a good price, thatll be a great buy if it goes on sale.

    • Has NCM battery though.

Ugliest thing I've ever laid eye on.
