You can't jokes here. This is 2024.

      • +13

10 years ago and this wouldve been high +

        • Yeah we have changed so much

      • You can if it's funny or clever…….

    • +1

      VISUAL aids

  • -5

For people having Kinsey scale 6

    • And all the Bali bogans?

      • +3

This is for HIV, not HPV

        • Correct. Prostitution is pretty rampant around the world and there's an increased risk in a lot of poorer countries too.

    • +1

Most people with hiv in the world are female actually.

      • What makes you say that?

      • -1

I'd question that, because the largest figures come from Africa where as a male it is often taboo to declare you have it, so males will not even test for it let alone get treated.

Australia is something like 4000 women 24000 men.

        • You think the UN isn't capable of making a confident estimate?

  • deal is at hivtest.au

didn't know there was an .au domain

makes sense, but doesn't give you any clues about what sort of organisation or not they are

    • +2

Actually you're visiting Ozbargain.com.au us which is also an .au domain.
All the domain with .com.au, the ".com" is actually under ".au"

    • Which is why I found this part odd

      via partnership of Australian Government

I don't know who these people are but surely they'd have an ABN to get the .com.au domain. I don't think anything with just .au has caught on yet despite being around for a few years now and personally I still view it with scepticism because anyone can get a .au, the .com.au at least has some kind of verification

      • .com.au at least has some kind of verification

You mean asking for an ABN number that you can get instantly with no verification?

  • +8

thought the site was for hi vis vests …

    • i get you, thought too it was HIV's Elf-Test 🧝

  • How much does it cost for the treatment if positive?

      • +23

Yes, famously you can only get infected by the virus if you have gay sex. It seems easier, cheaper and less risky to pay attention in school as well.

        • +3

The best way to stop these diseases spreading throughout our society would be to end the culture of casual sex (fat chance) and to more seriously prosecute people who transmit the disease through gross negligence or intentionally. How can people like Godfrey Zaburoni and Jadd Brooker (incidentally NOT homosexuals) get only 9 and 36 years respectively? Ridiculous.

      • +1

Totally right. You also don't get covid if you don't socialise with gay people.

        • People used to be much gayer back in the day, those were gay ol'times.

    • +6

      https://napwha.org.au/hiv-treatment-for-all/

It's free (except some minor co-payments) and is even free for people w/o access to Medicare

    • The treatment i believe is free and gov based- and nowdays most can live a long life as other people

      • can live a long life as other people

        So like witness protection?

    • +2

      Look into prep my dude.

  • lol @ finger prick tests still being a thing in AUS. In the US you can get oral tests from any pharmacy.

    • +37

some might prefer a prick over oral

      • Most prefers both oral and prick.

    • +4

      Blood tests might be better…

The rapid oral HIV test is quite accurate (similar to the standard blood antibody test) for persons with chronic, or longstanding, HIV infection, but it is not as accurate for people with new or recent HIV infection.

  • +1

Go get em bois and gurls. As a share holder of Atomo we need the gov to use these up so they will buy more!

    • -3

Test kit manufacturer with a share price down 95% over the last 5 years during a global pandemic requiring test kits… Holding their shares is financial AIDS.

      • but when you are in too deep…you don't pull out ;)

        • -1

I sold when i needed some losses. Half way through Covid you could see they were a lost cause.

          • @buffalo bill: Yeah. It's like if you can't capitalise your detection tech for covid when the demand is massive, how can you possibly survive when the demand isn't there during normal times. But like I said…I am in too deep.

  • +8

I never slept with anyone do i still need it 😪

    • +3

      Ohh 😏

    • +9

You can get AIDS from other ways as well

      • +4

Ohh no wonder you are a doctor 😁

        • +1

          IVDU etc

          • @dangerdanger: Is it bad that I immediately thought if you’re an IVDUser you’re very unlikely to have never had sex?

    • +6

But they may have slept with you

      • Haha that's cool reply 😄

    • -2

Thats the point. Not sleeping. If everyone just sleep nothing will happen no baby no hiv.

      • +7

Having sex is not the only possible way to get HIV

Edit: lol at the neg. As evident in some commentary here, there are a lot of ignorant people.

        • +1

Immature people who think they're being funny - as long as we can educate some people that's all that matters :)

        • -1

I mean Australian blood transfusions are screened, so unless you're shooting up sex is pretty much the only way to aquire it, with gay sex increasing that risk 20x.

          • @buffalo bill: *anal sex
Same receptive transmission risk whether you're female or male

            • -1

@lachhelix: Incorrect. The cells of the vagina and anus are different, and the anus experiences trauma more often. Male to male is optimal for viral transmission.

              • +1

@buffalo bill: The cells are certainly different and vaginal sex is "safer" but you missed my point haha.

Whether you're having anal sex with a woman or anal sex with a man, the transmission risk is the same.

                • +1

@lachhelix: Disregarding the fact many anal is not 100% of penatrative sex between male and females, and straight people are less likely to be carriers, studies have shown the viral transmission will always be optimal between two males. Google Zambia-Emory HIV Project.

I have nothing against being gay, it's just fact and while it's good to be aware, there is no sense in alarming a whole bunch of straight white people in relationships about HIV and pretending they are the target market for this test kit.

Look at the Grim Reaper campaign of the late 80's and where that got the gay community.

                  • @buffalo bill:

there is no sense in alarming a whole bunch of straight white people in relationships

What does white have to do with it?

Anyway obviously unprotected anal sex is the most risky activity to get HIV and yes gay men are probably doing more of that than anyone else. However the kit is for anyone who thinks they need it. There’s a lot of people who have sex outside of their relationship, including ‘straight’ men who have sex with men, very often unbeknownst to their partner.

        • Does circumcision effect transmissibility?

    • +1

Apparently it originated in primates, so proceed accordingly.

      • We're primates.

    • You do share needles though?

  • +10

@JV (given how hard he gets pounded by the community)

    • +5

      She*

    • +3

Being a tightass increases your chances or so I'm told

  • I haven't touched any ladies or dudes in the past two years, do I need this test?

    • +3

      Ew you use public toilets

    • +7

That is complete and utter garbage

HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, is spread primarily through some bodily fluids. The virus must directly enter your bloodstream for infection to occur. Though transmission can occur in several ways, a toilet seat is not one of them.

      Source: Healthline.com

    • Keep your penis off public toilets.

  • +1

Can we get it but not getting any symptoms?

  • +1

If you ever had a blood transfusion, its worth taking a test.

    • In my case they tested me daily for 3 weeks :(

      • Cause it can take up to 3 months and some articles state up to 6 months for virus to become detectable via antibody tests

      • Was this here in Australia?

        • Yep. HIV wasn't the main reason for daily blood tests while I was incapacitated.

  • -6

I’ve given blood, I don’t know who I gave it to but imma bee positive.

    • -2

I met a guy who worked on one of the injections and he said some of the trial patients tested positive to HIV (without actually having it).

    • +1

      Cookers are loose again.

  • +2

Why would ozbargainers need this? They don't have time for anything else other than ozb

    • Yeap, using their allotted single condom per year means they should be safe.

  • +7

This is great, I am glad free testing is out there to do at home.

  • +7

A lot of ignorant comments above.

Basically in a nutshell thinking that people who get HIV only get it from

    1. Gay sex
    2. Having sex
    • +4

      i love sex, durex

    • +3
      1. Monkey handshakes
    • -4
      1. doesn't help though does it
    • +2

Could be worse, you could really out yourself as an idiot and claim it’s transmitted via vaccines and boosters.

  • +5

Very important - everybody should get a test at least once in their life.
Remember there is a test window if you think you've been recently exposed to HIV - this window varies a lot based on a number of factors so see your GP for a definitive answer :)

    • What do you mean test window. So once we are out of that window it will not detected by test?

      • +3

The window period for an HIV test is the time between infection and when the virus can be reliably detected by a test. The window period depends on the type of HIV test. The tests provided through HIVTest.au have a window period of three months. This means the HIV self-testing kits may not detect HIV that has been acquired in the last three months. "From the website"

        • +1

An odd term from the medical community. I’ve never heard of the word being using in a negative sense, rather the ordinary meaning of window is in the positive sense such as a “period of time in which the test does work”. Very interesting!

      • +1

        Yeah as mentioned by OP.
Sorry I should have been clearer!

  • +8

I've worked with several HIV-positive patients, so this is quite helpful. Thank you!

  • +14

And remember PrEP as a preventive measure is something that should be considered too if you're more at risk.
