  • Will JB price match?

    • price is after 10% off extra promo code.

don’t think so but you can always try. I have heard people get price matches when normally in the same situation they wouldn’t be able to.

    • I got the blue ones this week for $449 at JB I think he messed up and scanned the wrong product

Just make sure for warranty purposes in future that it reflects right product on your receipt. I don’t think they will take back discount especially considering you opened product

Good to have a read of some thoughts about the QC Ultras before committing to them IMO - opinions are a bit divided (mine included, as a long-time Bose user) - e.g. see https://www.reddit.com/r/bose/comments/1940dfh/bose_quietcom…

My experience is with the Bose QC35 II, then 700, then QC45 - my view is that the 700 was a move in the wrong direction, then the QC45 was a move in the right direction again with the more classic Bose design favouring comfort and usability over design (e.g. having button controls).

Having also owned the Sony WH-1000XM4, I find that also a very competitive product which increasingly looks more competitive against the Bose given it's available for a lower price.

FWIW, I would be weary of jumping straight into the QC Ultra, my sense is that it has some of the flaws of the 700s, which I regretted purchasing. Yes, I'm aware I own too many noise cancelling headphones - one for my home office, one lives in my work bag, one on my bedside table, and one is technically my wife's.

one thing I heard multiple times (and I think you will agree with me here) is out of all those the 700 had the best microphones for calls. as in reducing the background noise but still putting your voice through clearly.

apparently it was a huge step up from QC35 and the mics on 700 perform better than the Ultra.

      • I've heard people say the same, but I've never actually listened to a recording of what I sound like. Nobody I've spoken to on the phone has raised any issue with the quality of the microphones in any of them.

        • I use a pair of old QC35s as my office headphones for Teams and calls etc. Never had anyone complain they could not hear me clearly or well. But they do complain when the office gets a bit noisy… they seem to pickup background noise very well also.

      Could you explain? Which flaws?

      • See the post I linked - I decided not to get the Ultra, so I can't give you a first hand account of what is good and bad, but broadly speaking, the reasons why I didn't are:

        1) They went in the same direction as the 700 in terms of controls - the QC35 and QC45 have excellent controls with the three button setup that makes it very easy to play/pause, volume up, and volume down, as well as answer calls. The Ultra decides to trade the three button setup for a one button and touch "stripe" setup (for the volume controls) that literally add nothing to the user experience, but taking away the tactile feedback of the volume controls. For me personally, I know how many "clicks" I need to press to get the volume where I want it to be, so using touch controls which do not have tactile feedback is an inconvenience.

        2) The QC35 and QC45 have looser headbands that are more comfortable. The 700 has extremely tight headbands that make them uncomfortable, and the Ultra has a tight-ish headband that is not as bad as the 700, but not as good as the QC35 and QC45

        3) Non-clicky adjustment on the Ultra (like the 700) seem nice in theory, but again, are bad because they are not precise. For example, when folding out my headphones, I know exactly how many clicks to lengthen the headband by, but with the 700 (and I presume the Ultra), I kind of just have to eyeball it.

FWIW, I don't think the Ultra is a bad set of headphones, but when the QC45 / SE were going on sale in like the $200-250-ish price range, for $450, they had to be something really special.

        • Thanks for sharing. I will probably skip this gen then.

        • Thanks for the great summary!

I can't decide, QuietComfort Ultra or the xm4-5 from Sony? I bought the xm5 a year ago and returned them a week later, I used them outside in the summer and because of sweat the sound shorted out in one earphone and clicking started, but now I don't live in Brisbane, but in Melbourne and I don't think it will be as hot in the summer

    • I tried both in store and found the hose more comfortable

      Bose comfort is unmatched

I'm tempted, however I tried the qc45s a few months ago and sent them back. Has anyone else experienced this with their QC45s or their Ultras?

Started to notice a crackle when synced to 2 Bluetooth devices, disconnect from one and it seemed ok. Turns out to be a known problem….

Then noticed when i was putting the dishes away, spesifically the cutlery, started with a few and got the crackle tried it with just 1 fork nothing… 2 forks and there it was…. tried it on all kinds of anc settings, joys of the bose are that you cant turn it off…..

Turns out a known thing that is accepted by bose….

    Bose crackle and distort article

    • Interesting, a reviewer mentioned it on YouTube as a side note he experienced a crackling at takeoff. Going on Bose statement, the microphones are clipping because the input volume is too high for them, honestly either they should fix it in firmware or they can't and it's a design flaw.
That said, you're the second person to mention it after many reviews I saw.

    • Absolutely noticed that popping with the QC45 when putting dishes away etc, returned them for this very reason as you can't turn the ANC off - such a terrible design flaw honestly, wouldn't have killed them to have a third mode with no ANC and no passthrough like basically all other ANC sets have…

Regarding the popping itself, every other ANC set I've tried also has this issue though, with the exception of the WH-1000XM4 - I tested by dropping forks into the cutlery draw in an intentionally noisy way a bunch of times to try and provoke it and the XM4 handled it like a champ, I had to really go out of my way to produce the popping whereas other ANC headsets would do it at the drop of a hat when just doing the dishes normally.

No idea if the XM5 is just as good in this regard - other than the XM4 and QC45, the only other ANC sets I've tried were budget to mid-range buds and cans from the likes of Soundpeats, QCY, Edifier. Given the QC45's price tag it was definitely disappointing to find it behaving more like the cheaper sets than the Sony wrt the popping, and since you can't turn the ANC off, it was kinda unacceptable for me for day to day use.

if you watch Gymcaddy's youtube reviews on Sony headphones he always shows how Sony have this "loud noise detection" feature (functions all the time by default - it's not listed in marketing or the app) when the headphones have it. I can't remember all models that have this feature but if definitely on all their flagship models XM4, XM5 etc.

what it does is when a sudden loud noise is detected the headphone's ANC and ambient noise system it reacts by lowering the mic sensitivity. Gymcaddy shows it works better on XM4 than the XM5 if I remember correctly.

he demonstrates it in videos by enabling Ambient mode, than playing a sudden loud noise such as ambulance siren, and the headphones react very quickly and lower the noise of the siren so it isn't painful or shocking. I think this works based on mic volume so affects the entire system including ANC which is why on the XM4 you don't experience the popping/clipping sound you mentioned.

I posted that Ultra Open deal, but haven't tried them due to the absurd cost and limited utility for my needs. Instead I bought $25 clones off Aliexpress which are pretty good. They seem remarkably close to the real ones externally (based on videos I've seen of the real ones), though I'm sure the internals are leagues different. That said, they can sound half decent when positioned carefully. Which is a little tricky, since they don't have heaps of volume.

If anyone is curious about the Opens, these can be a way to sample the form factor before spending heaps. Personally I find them comfy and enjoyable to use, but I don't have much use for them these days. If I was doing more running, hiking, or kayaking, I'd be all over the real ones. They've been great for those activities.

Thanks, got some for $10 with welcome deal. My use-case is just audiobooks so will give them a shot!

    • Nice, always wanted to try the form factor but didn't want to spend that much

  • Anyone have 1000XM5 willing to share their thoughts vs QuietComfort Ultra headphones?

    • I am also thinking of getting XM5, any one please shade xm5 or new version of airpod, i need noise cancelling device for study purpose. Thanks.

      • XM5 is pretty uncomfortable for me after an hour or so of wearing, probably due to the ear cups are too tight. had a XM3 and never had that issue.
        Sound-wise, cant complain.

        • Thank you.

  • Hi, can someone please suggest a decent budget ANC headphone purely for flights and on the go calls? I'm not a big music fan so battery life isn't an issue. Thanks

    • +2

If you're OK with buds, the QCY MeloBuds HT05 are really hard to beat in terms of value, insanely good for the price. The MeloBuds Pro for a few bucks more are also fantastic, slightly better at muting ambient chatter but otherwise very similar.

If you prefer over ear headphones, look at the Edifier W820NB or similar.

If ANC strength is your primary concern, the buds will probably be the better option.

      • Thank you! How it's in comparison with soundcore by Anker Q20i, just noticed, highest selling on Amzon, any advice please? Thanks

  • Darn it. I want the blue!
Can see white looking filthy in minutes

  • code does not work for diamond ? showing $499

  • These are quality and comfortable but I wish they looked as sleek as the Sony ones.

  • I’ve had the qc45 for a few years and am disappointed. When connected to two or more devices (iOS+MacBook in my case), there is a stutter every few minutes which is immensely annoying and destroys any form of immersion. This has been a known issue for many years now; disconnecting the other device fixes the problem but having to do this each time is frustrating. My qc35ii did not have this issue. Wish I went for the Sonys.

  • If only it had noise cancellation
