Avoid aldi electrical things, had multiple issues with their products, i.e. power boards tripping RCDs, and shortcicuiting

If it's the same as the previous one that I bought 2-3 months ago, they can be flashed via tuya-cloudcutter. I bought 10 rgbw ones and flashed them with esphome. Once I figured out what's what, took me 5 minutes per item to flash.
If you like you can even turn on the rgb and white leds together to get more brightness, not sure it's a good idea since it draws more power than advertised.

    • Did you have to open them up to connect to the Beken chip inside? I didn't think the wireless method was working on these anymore.

      • Pure software only.

        • Are you using Tuya Cloudcutter? These lights used the BK7231N which has been patched against the wireless exploit, if you are successfully doing these I'd like to know how as it would save me time opening them up.

Edit.. Are these using the BK7231T? In that case they can be patched. I might give one a go then, I've has casalux RGB strips and they've used the BK7231N.

          • @Hank Scorpion: Just give it a go.

            • +1

@Man10United: Cheers, it just worked :)

I bought one in the last sale, I put it aside after I had to solder onto one of the LED strips and never got back to it. It was still unopened in the box, I probably wouldn't have looked at it again at least not for a while if I hadn't seen your comment. I'll definitely be buying some more on the weekend.

    • What chip is in your one?. My 2 year old ones have the WB2L as seen here. Can't be flashed I don't believe.

      • +1

        They can totally be flashed!
OpenBeken supports WB2L as seen in the list here:
        https://github.com/openshwprojects/OpenBK7231T_App

Doing it with CloudCutter makes for a completely wireless flash too. No opening the hardware at all. I’ve flashed dozens this way

        • Interesting, I must dig deeper as wasn't aware of this method. Nice.
So if I flash, do you know if they will still be detected in HomeAssistant and whether changing RGB colour option is avail?
Currently I have them working via "Local Tuya" add-on. It works fine but only for power and colour temp but not for changing colours.

      • @Borg I got the exact same model as your photo in the last sale. I’m assuming it will be WB2L too based on that but I guess can’t be certain. Did that blue cap just pop off? I tried to pull one off mine but it seems pretty well stuck, didn’t want to destroy the light by trying to have a peek.

        • @dammit: Yeah, was easy enough to take apart with the right tools to slide in and gently detach. If you look at the bottom middle pic and one to the right of it, you will see the little white catches that hold the blue bottom part in place. There are x3 at the rear and x2 (one each side of where the power cable attaches.
If you need other pics, just let me know.

@Man10United How did you get ESPHome on your lights? I didn’t think beken chipsets were supported on ESPHome? Though I admit I haven’t looked for over a year..

Thought OpenBeken was the only option? Or did you replace the onboard chip with an ESP compatible chip?

      • +3

There was a branch on the esphome repo that supported tuya stuff. It's been a while that the branch has merged into the master. Long story short, it is officially supported now.
For these lights, we need this line in the yaml:

        bk72xx:
          board: generic-bk7231t-qfn32-tuya

Here is my full yaml for RGB version.

In general, cloud-cutter repo has a directory that has a few firmwares including a generic esphome which you could start from as well.

        • Wow. Who knew. This is good stuff.

This page seems to have the info on ESPHome support for Beken chips:
          https://esphome.io/components/libretiny.html

Not sure if there’s much point in me flashing from OpenBeken back to ESPHome at this point? Never used ESPHome, so if you have suggestions on why one might be better than the other, I’m all ears

  • any idea how many lumens these are?

    • -1

      Cool white 6500k
      Warm white 2700k

      • +1

        that's temperature not lux

    • +1

They are 8 watts which I believe is around 700lm if a globe (equal to 60w bulb), but these being enclosed down lights will be less and perhaps gives out approx 600lm (at a guess) :-).

  • Do these revert to full brightness when power cycled with a switch?

  • +1

If anyone that has these can comment on the quality of them and brightness etc?

Or anyone that has mirabella lights compared to these

    Thanks

    • Exactly. In comparison to competitors, how good are these?

Are they the best or just cheapest?

  • +1

These definitely are running a BK7231T chip which is good, I just flashed one to ESPHome over WiFi.

For anyone wondering about the process:
    https://github.com/tuya-cloudcutter/tuya-cloudcutter/blob/ma…

To put this into slow blink mode you need to power cycle it 6 times, it will start fast blinking after 3 times. It may lose connection on its first attempt to connect but just power cycle the device again into slow blink.

    • Is the chip being BK7231T different to the module thing I see with WB2L ? Just wondering how I can tell exactly which chip and which firmware to use ?

ESPHome seems like a better option than OpenBeken I’m guessing.

      • Different modules but both use the BK7231T chip so wireless flashing process will work.

I prefer ESPHome as all the configs are located centrally and I can update them from home assistant. I started off with flashing Deta products to tasmota though which openBeken is a lot like, as far as the UI and UX are concerned.

Nothing wrong with OpenBeken and its a little more standalone as you just create the config and flash it whereas with ESPHome you need to manage that config and upload it to the device but once you have that setup its very easy to do updates and all your config is accessible in one spot. Depends on your use case really

  • This white downlight is only $3 cheaper than the RGB colour smart LED downlight I bought at Bunnings over the weekend (set up in Tuya app)
Edit: or is this available in RGB too ?

    • Usually both.but not seeing RGB version incl on this special!

Anyone has any experience with Aldi's $99 Bauhn Turntable with speakers? I have seen a couple of them at local Aldi, not sure if it is good to start with turntables. https://bauhn.com.au/turntable-with-speakers/

  • Found them in my local Aldi today. Only 2 RGBs but almost 10 white ones was there. $14.99.

  • I tried to pull the blue cover off one of my rgb ones from May 2024 to check the chipset. My god, it seems to be super glued on there. No amount of prying can get it to even budge a little. I even tried some of those adjustable wide pliers and a car trim removal tool!

Is it necessary to confirm each chipset by pulling apart or safe to assume based on the other couple of teardowns, or is there a way to confirm chipset thru wifi with it?

Casalux 706391 smart-AL2017-RGB-Tgts images https://imgur.com/a/2jB7zt3 been trying to pop off the blue part where I marked the red arrow.

    • read the posts above

  • anyone bought one and flashed it yet?

    • Took a punt and bought a mix of 40 of white and rgb from a couple of stores. Both white and rgb were able to be flashed with cloudcutter.

White ones are pretty good and brighter than the bunnings mirabella which can't be flash.

The RGB lights are the same led for white but the colour is crap. Hopefully tweaking the esphome home config will make them a bit better

      • refined the yaml for the RGB and now all appears pretty decent.

Anyone else using the RGB/whites and can share their code as there's a few chunks of it out there.

        Thanks

        • Tried CC today and was flashed with openbeken fw now. Did you flash the esphome one or openbeken? RGW brightness is very low so looking for some options if that can be increased.

          • +1

@IDontKnowWhyImHere: reflash it with esphome then you can use a yaml file to tweak the settings. https://esphome.io/

Or just do it through the home assistant addon.

            • @barg99: After flashing it doesnt get into falsh mode after switching of 3 or 6 times. Tried multiple times. Before flashing the custom firmware it was straightforward but now its nit getting into it. Any idea if there is other procedure?

              • @IDontKnowWhyImHere:

                1. reset by switching off and on 6 times so it's in slow flash mode
                2. run cloudcutter script
                3. reset by switching off and on 6 times so it's in slow flash mode
                4. connect to light via phone and add to wifi
  • Does anyone know if they are suited for insulation on ceiling, I think it’s called IC4 rating. Thanks in advance

  • I bought 8 of them and was able to replace only 6. I climbed up the attic and just plugged them in. All good for those 6. For two which are yet to be replaced the wire is short. It does not reach the socket. Any suggestions ?

    • Short extension lead

      • is it legal to use extesion lead/chord in attic in roof?
