Hello,

I was in the market for a DAS (not a NAS) to chuck those fabulous refurbished drives in. Locally, you can get it from the QNAP store for $273.99 delivered.

The 4 bay TR-004 can be had for $319 delivered. Which is a similar price locally, give or take.

2 call outs:
- Likely supplied with a euro plug for the power supply.
- Delivery is slated for end of Oct, so a bit of a wait.

Cheers

  • Please excuse my ignorance but couldn't you just get a couple of cheap enclosures if you're just looking for direct connection and not network?

This has a Raid controller on board for Raid 0/1

    • +2

You definitely can, I personally have been scarred by them in the past (YMMV), a lot of them are no names, and come with simple set ups.

This comes with backing from QNAP which will allows you to access their software to set up RAIDs etc.

I have the TR04, great rig, but I believe these aren't hot swappable, so if you have 2x 8tb hdds and want to upgrade you have to 2x 16tb, you have to start fresh, not a big deal at this price but something to consider

    • -1

Did not know that, actually ridiculous.

    • yeah the TR04 is definitely the better prduct. Loving mine.,

      OOC

How would you not be able to do it with this RAID?

Wouldn't you just have to turn it off, pull an one old one out, and put a new one in then wait for it to rebuild, then do it again with the other side?

      • Also curious why this isnt possible

        • probably was running a striped drive setup. no way that it could be a thing.

    • The specs on the website indicate they're hot-swappable

  • +2

I have the tr004, used for a few years and it's a great DAS
Onboard raid and has monitoring software for smart status etc.

  • This or a bit more for the DS223j?

    • fairly different use cases. What do you want to achieve?

      • Mainly to backup Macbook and iPhones.

        • This would need a direct connection to back up. It’s a usb connection only(unless you set up a NAS build on an attached NUC as well.

A NAS would make more sense though if that is not your intention. Would be able to connect over a network.

          • @ONEMariachi: I see. Yes I'll need a NAS instead. I would like backup happening overnight in the background over network.

  • Been thinking of this one (in USD) and the price has dropped $35 recently. Unfortunately you have to press the little buttons on each drive after turning the whole thing on so I may pass. Shipping isn't cheap but they sometimes have great deals so can get a few things at once.

I think some people say these QNAP ones are slow and that's why I ended up getting this last time: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1635296-REG/owc_owcme…

    • Yeah except your comparing a jbod enclosure to something with Raid controller in it

      • Don't want to buy a spare raid controller in case the first one fails and they are no longer actively manufactured / sold on ebay for ridiculous prices. It's why I prefer ZFS.

        • Again apples and oranges
Plus I wouldn't be running zfs over USB

          • @Lonewolf1983: Everything is apples and oranges, people can make their own decision. I'm not saying this is cheaper and therefore you should buy it instead of the original deal.

  • $226 ? That's a ridiculious price.

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006619240544.html is under $75 shipped, and works with giant 22TB drives.

    • +1

there's lots of cheap no name ones even locally under $100 but OP and others here say they are unreliable

people are willing to pay double for a brand name i guess

    • Yottamaster and Orico too!

      • +1

Orico are a bad choice - some of them do crazy things like present the hard drives with a generic serial number, so that NAS applications can't tell the drives apart properly. Here's an example thread - https://forum.openmediavault.org/index.php?thread/29145-devi…

It's the SATA to USB bridge that makes this mistake, but there are a bunch of Orico enclosures that use the problematic ones.

        • Thanks for the info.

    • I'm using this exact model in a RAID1 (2x16GB) setup myself and it's been running fine for over a year.

Attached via USB-C to USB 3.0 on my router and easily accessed via SMB from all my devices.

Support and warranty would probably be non-existent if something goes wrong though. Then again, I keep a third off-network backup anyway.

  • Because it has it’s own controller - you won’t be able to control drive spin down or fan speeds etc from your server if you are hoping to use it on this way.

  • I'm no fan of proprietary raid storage systems. If the DAS fails you are screwed without another compatible QNAP system to recover the data.

    • Huh ?
If the DAS fails, you just get a new one and restore your backup.

You DEFINATELY should not be making your backups in a way that locks them into requiring another QNAP system !! That way lies madness 🤩

    • In general yes
The 2 bay one is going to just be a mirrored setup though - so pull either of the drives out and plug into any HDD enclosure and you have your files.

    • True, typical you get downvoted on OzBargain, everyone tries to fight you instead of asking what you mean because everyone thinks they're right and their viewpoint is the only one.
You're not doing hardware RAID right unless you have at least 1 redundant controller. 5 years down the line these may not be made anymore and be incompatible with the new model which may corrupt your data if you transfer drives from the old one to the future one. Even if it's a mirror, they can put a weird header on. Maybe someone will sell these old models on ebay for $1000 in the future.
Hardware RAID has these risks, it's why I prefer ZFS.

  • +1

Anyone know where I can get some decently priced drives? I haven't been in the market for hard drives in years but they seem to be even more expensive than they were 5 years ago

  • Oh this doesn't have network connection.
