How are these when it comes to noise?

    • I have no experience with these drives but they are 7200 RPM from what i know.

    • +13

      Noisy.

    • +7

I have one in my desktop next to me, generally don't really hear it unless I'm actively using it (just a data drive so not used much, mostly just "idle"), then you hear clicks etc, louder than my WD red.

I think a lot of the "it's super noisy" comments are about running multiple in RAID in a NAS where the activity is different. My case also has some sound deadening on the panels and the HDD are mounted on rubber grommet things, which may help.

      • +2

I hesitated to buy these for my desktop due to all the complaints but I pulled the trigger on two anyway due to the price. They're not nearly as bad as people say. They sometimes sound a bit clunky when in heavy use but otherwise they're quiet and I never have them go into sleep mode.

      • +3

Mine are in a Nas and they are noisy. I can hear them through the wall

    • +2

Got 2 from last order in my personal PC under my desk and they're the loudest HDDs I've ever owned (mostly owned WDs). e.g. Playing a mp4 is fine (maybe I'm used to it now) but when you scan through it, it clicks like crazy.

    • +1

Beyond noisy, to the point you will think it's defective (but it's not). If you are worried about noise at all then don't buy this. If you need a lot of storage for cheap then this is your best option

says I have to order 2 to book out.

    • +2

Sorry! i forgot to inculde that. I will add it

    • +3

Use the Shop Pay button to order 1. The minimum quantity isn’t enforced for that payment option.

Is the seller legit? Can I use it in Synology DS920? Thanks

    • +3

      Yes and Yes

    • Yes that's my worry. They may be old or faulty drives that just have their firmware flashed to show they are new.

      • +5

There have been several of deals from this seller. People would have gotten pitchforks out by now if there were serious issues.

        • +7

They also list and sell refurbished and pulled units, so they’re upfront about those ones.

    • I’m not sure these with SAS interface will run in DS920 ?

I purchased from this same vendor a couple months ago for my DS920 and went with SATA interface Exos X18 16TB “new” drives.

      • +1

        These are SATA

        • -4

OK… cause the original post at the op of this thread says “these are SAS interface”. Anyway… sounds like you’re onto it.

    • +2

can confirm they are legit. i've bought multiple bulk orders from these folks and they are doing good stuff.

their website definitely looks like you're about to be scammed, but their service and products have been excellent and accurate for me every time.

    • Bought 2, 1 was good other was non working, had to pay for shipping back but they sent a replacement which was working fine.

      • Did they refund you for the shipping since the issue is from them? Also, do you remember how much it cost to send back?

        • It was a PO Box so I couldn't save money with a cheaper sender, they just gave me an address and I sent myself via AusPost for $15.

It was for a friend and he waited for months before I had to contact them with only his PayPal email, not sure if they would have paid within the first month, but it didn't seem like it.

    • Yes I have bought from them and I have 3 of them in a ds 918

    • Eastbay used to supply the OzB HDD group buys back then.

  • Can this be used in the PVR machines?

ymmv out of 18 x ST16000NM001G i purchased short of just a year, 6 had failed :( . dom 2021 all made in china. prob bad batch or something fishy.

    • From this seller or someone else?

      • yes from this seller. they did replace tho. but left me feeling edgy..

    • Did the seller fix you up with warranty?

    • Yes because 2021 was also the date of their installation.

Remember supply and labour shortages during… i really doubt Seagate was just manufacturing warehouses of drives they wern't going to sell for years and then 3 years later (cough the approximate service life of an enterprise hdd) they appear for sale…

      • for normal channels.. enterprise..5yrs wty

        • Not talking about warranty, but when drives get pulled and changed out to ensure 24/7 365 uptime. After 5 years failure will be a lot higher and drive and any still operational is end of life.

Thats why you see a lot of refurbs and ex datacentre drives sold with around 20,000hours on them (when they havent had SMART data tampered with).

    • +2

I purchased 5 drives of the same drives at the start of this year. One had issues and was returned straight away. One failed 3 weeks ago and is going through the warranty process and then on Friday I had 2 more fail. So 4 out of 5 drives have failed so far.

Warranty claims have been relatively smooth though.

East Digitals definition of ‘new’ is the same as the ‘fresh’ sushi you find at petrol stations that definitely doesn’t give you food poisoning

    • interesting, do you have a source for this information?

I can personally confirm that they ship from australia, as well as overseas and it can be a bit of a lucky dip… but I've not experienced anything I've ordered from them as new not being such, even when occasionally digging in with low-level tools

      • Most of them were manufactured in 2021 (when you go to scan the barcode/serial number on the hard drive for Seagate warranty, it won't say 3 years left, some may have even expired if they were a 2020 batch).

Although anecdotal, there are a few comments every time this gets posted of drives failing (apparently their warranty claims are alright though, but losing data isn't exactly a fun process, RAID setup will probably mitigate this if 1 fails at least).

Remember to use credit cards that don't charge "foreign conversion fees". Even though it's listed in Australian dollars and that you will be charged that exact Australian dollars during checkout, your bank (in my case Westpac) will detect that it's from a foreign source and charge a "conversion fee" to the mix.

Earlier this year, I brought 3 of these drives from East Digital. One of them died within 24 hours of use but it wasn't too difficult to get a replacement, I had to ship the defective drive to Victoria.

I have my doubts whether these drives are really "new" but so far they are working fine, even the replacement drive that was shipped to me later.

    • yes, this is great advice. I also got slugged around $40 extra by Amex when purchasing a few drives recently…. I would have used another card that has no Forex fees if I’d known. Which I do now. Lesson learnt.

everything else about the purchase was great. Ordered Saturday, delivered Tues morning. excellent foam packaging. And the drives themselves doing great in my NAS.

    • dont think they are new. I've purchased NEW ones from local retailers with dom 2024 and late 2023

    • my previous order was shipped from Box Hill

    • That sucks to get hit with a "conversion fee"

I purchased this with PayPal (using commbank) I didn't get stung. How did you checkout?

  • +2

Use Shop Pay to bypass the minimum 2 device limit. Can order one device that way.

    • Not sure why I’m being down voted. Made an order for a single drive an hour ago which is confirmed. People have posted on previous deals about this being an option also and having received the order.

Click the Shop Pay button on the product page with a single item selected and it takes you to a payment screen. Don’t use the ‘add to cart button’.

      • oh good to know the trick thanks im considering building my own nas so need 4 at least

  • Highly unlikely these drives are new.

What they probably are is factory refurbished from Seagate that have had the Smart details reset as part of the refurbishment process. Or "refurbished" by some Chinese vendor with reprinted labels and reset Smart info.

The 3 year "warranty" is only as good as the company behind it. They go and so does your warranty.

But, it's your data and your money.

    • That's why I use RAID for redundancy and backups of my data. This crowd have been really good for warranty the last couple of years anyway.

The product description says "100% Generic Firmware" wft?

    • +3

      Probs should say "Genuine"

despite my prior reservations, i did end up getting 2x of these new (?) drives from them and did a full drive scan, took forever, but came out clean. Now using it, with no issues. Id probably be happy to buy another 2.

but yeah use a card with no intl transaction fees, got stung there but at least i was getting $100 off from CBA https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/839919

    • What did you use to do a full drive scan if you don’t mind me asking?

      • I bought a big quantity, so spent $50 on getting Hard Disk Sentinel.

Maybe not best option but worked for me.

      • I use Minitool Parition Wizard - surface test. This can be done in CMD as well chkdsk /r

Crystaldisk is good for monitoring SMART - but this can be software reseted.

      • i just looked up what ppl were using on reddit r/datahoarder and this seem to be recommended: https://hddscan.com/

you can do 3 diff tests, verify, read, or write, fastest to slowest in that order. warning; it takes a whole lot of time… days..

    • just adding onto this; it was 'sealed' into its own anti static bag which added to the 'new' packaging, and was insanely well packaged. Delivery was from NSW.

  • does this last in a Synology NAS

  • New or refurbished?

    • It's labeled as New from their website.

    • CONDITION
New 0 Hour Use Time, BULK

  • Any deals on 18TB?

    • Not from these guys.

  • +1

you can use Paypal to order 1 by clicking more payment options. I have one of these from previous deal ($310) and still works well.

  • Where are these highly regarded? In previous threads I keep seeing people discussing high failure rates and questioning whether they actually are “new”.

    • +1

Had no issues with the 6 I have purchased

    • If you look through the tag Hard Drive, you can see the posts for these exact HDD's and they have a very large number of upvotes. 81, 62, 111 just to name a few, so i consider it to be highly regarded.

    • No issues with mine so far.

  • +1

Altogether I have purchased about 42x 18TB Exos drives from East Digital.

Since the "Send money to a friend" Paypal system years ago with Li Yankee :-)
Delivery is quick. (last two orders, next day delivery)
I have yet to receive a faulty drive. (New and Factory refurbished) - Touch Wood!
Based on past service I trust they will rectify the situation quickly.

At AUD292 for 18TB it is a steal for me!

They charge me in AUD on their site on shopify.

I am not affiliated except being a happy customer.

    Good Luck

    YMMV

    • Damn, what you doing with this much storage?

  • damn thats cheap

  • Bought one of these last year even though i felt something is not right about these hard drives, but it has been working fine so far. Currently running crystaldiskinfo to keep an eye on it. Yes they are quite loud when they are writing data so keep that in mind if you're planning on putting this in a device where you are sleeping.

  • I got a 14tb unit that is fill with 13tb space taken.
    hasnt failed yet

  • Just paid over $100 more per drive for these off ebay (which were cheapest at the time).

I bought 2 to upgrade a reolink nvr as apparently it can handle 2 of these drives.
