  • but would you trust them in a nas?
(home nas solution) - always on, not a great deal read writes. but who am i to judge that comparatively./

    • +7

I reckon it should be okay if you're gonna set up RAID on NAS as there's already a redundancy measure.

      • very true. ty. had forgotten about raid.

        • I've had WD reds o. 24x7 in a nas for 10 years

    • +2

I am running a few of them in my home NAS, at end of the day as long as you have a spare drive when you get a failure, and set up redundancy and backups it doesn't really matter.

They are pretty good at warranty returns as i have had one failed and no issues in getting it sent back for replacement

after how many months/years? and who pay for shipping back cost
        thanks

      • +1

when you say sent back. do you mean locally? or back to HK?

        • +1

From memory (and someone feel free to correct me), they have an Australian-based address you send the drive to for warranty purposes.

    • I've done it with two of these in the past - maybe 18 months ago. Worked flawlessly so far, although I only write to it occasionally.

      • +2

        Threesome?

    • Depends on your use case. I use these in my home NAS media server. If it all goes belly up, I've only lost multimedia which I can reasonably easily reacquire.

Now if I had sensitive data that is absolutely cannot be replaced - I'd be making damnwell sure I had offsite backups anyway.

    • They're factory refurbished so should be ok.

  • +10

Not really a sale, imo. I've been tracking prices. ED just fluctuates/adjusts prices $ by $ every day. They never remove the "sale" sticker, for whatever that is worth. This price is still relatively high, historically.

    • What is the lowest you have seen for the 16TB ? I have been monitoring this one and it was sold out at $248 last time.

      • +5

~$239 is the ~2 years low, I think generally ~$239-$243 are pretty good. Sometimes I see the price dropping $1 every day but it often reverses before it hits the low. But of course there's a lot of talk about HDD prices being on the rise again, so account for that how you will. Personally I don't expect it to affect refurb prices.

    • Cab you link others that have been a good deal?

Trying to grab a few for an offsite backup

    • +1

If you are looking at the price in $A it will change daily based on exchange rate, I believe their prices are set in $US. Sale prices tend to be about A$20 lower than their standard prices.

Been monitoring prices and yes they are slowly climbing but East Digital is still probably the best I know of with a good reputation.

      • +1

You're right! I just checked and the $ changes are pretty much spot on to AUDUSD… did not expect the currencies to be this volatile recently…

  • +4

Thanks for the post rinzlertaken. $43 more for the 16TB ST16000NM000J, gets you the non referb one: https://east-digital.myshopify.com/products/seagate-st16000n…

  • Do these drives have standard SATA interfaces? As in could I put one in a PC or external enclosure?

    • +2

That's right just like a regular consumer drive. But as enterprise drives they are going to be much louder, so maybe avoid putting them in the PC sitting on the desk next to you.

  • +5

Not sure if I'm just unluck enough, order ST18000NM003D from east digital and DOA. long beep, disk no spin.
Get email to say send back and they will replace it. Later need pay the postage $14 myself

    • +5

Many people here on Ozbargain have RMA drives from here and ED covered postage. Sounds odd.

      • I definitely asked questions in the email with ED and they answer the most but just not postage one…

        • DOA return should be covered under australian consumer law

          • -1

@Save Medicare: Australian consumer law does not apply to companies who are operating solely outside of Australia.

            • @samfisher5986: Foreign companies who conduct any business (such as the sale of goods) within Australia are still subject to ACL

              • +1

@TheFreaK: Of course they are "subject" to it.

But it is unenforceable and no company will bother complying with ACL because they have nothing to gain by doing so.

            • @samfisher5986: It definitely applies to international retailers selling to Australians via letter of the Australian law, but there's no legal basis for solely international companies to comply as they're not subject to Australian law.

It's goodwill for them to comply.

Must resist. My collection of Linux ISOs needs more storage. It's a battle

    • NixOS. Don't need anything else.

      The Home Lab must grow.

      One of us.

      • What i meant to say was my collection of "Linux ISOs"…

  • I'm in need of HDDs but so many comments have said they've received DOA drives. This is way higher than normal.

    • I don't normally comment (as most happy people wouldn't) but my drive from them has been perfect. Looking to buy another. Mine was a re-certified Iron Wolf.

    • Yeah, I've ordered 2 recertified 18TB Exos from them in the past. Run perfectly.

    • Probably more a reflection on Seagate than East Digital to be fair.

      • +1

Why? aren't these second hand drives?

    • I've been running 2x18TB EXOS from them for 6 months with no issues. They looked brand new when I got them. 250mb/s read from my NAS with mirror pool.

    • Negative BIAS - people who received DOA will comment or report - these outcomes are normally resolved with ED resupplying. People who had no issues like myself don't normally report/comment.

Considering the low cost, and ED happy to honour warranty/DOA etc - it's a bargain nonetheless unless you absolutely need it next day/week.

Saying - 'no news is good news'.

  • Recently bought 2 12tb drives from ED. Arrived in about 2-3 days. Both work fine, 0 hours on crystal disk.

    • +7

Factory recertified means they have reset this to 0. The real number could be anything.

      • +3

        Why pop the bubble ;)

  • +1

    Factory Recertified Product

Probably better to put it in the post.

  • where are these guys located?

    • +2

HK but post from NSW as can see tracking

      • Chullora, NSW? The drop-shipping capital of Australia?

  • Waiting on a 20tb hdd sale! :)

  • +2

Factory recertified - should be in the title.

  • +1

Does "Factory recertified" mean anything but we cleaned/replaced the shell and reset the SMART data?

    • -1

      according to Chat GPT:
"Factory recertified" hard drives refer to drives that have been returned to the manufacturer for various reasons, such as customer returns, warranty claims, or other issues. The manufacturer then tests, repairs, and certifies these drives to ensure they meet the original specifications and performance standards.

do i actually trust these guys to have returned the HDs to the manufactorer to have them fixed? unsure :S

      • Recertified products have a different label on them and says they are recertified.

The image of the post also shows that.

      • +4

Stop using a predictive text program to do research for you and learn how to google yourself.

  • -1

I am not a fan of their website. It is a standard template with no customisation. The text for free shipping, exchanges and mission statement for example. Just how much credit do you give them for a 3 year warranty.

    • +2

looking back through OzyB deals, seems that East Digital is a fav on ozzby. so take that as you will

    • +3

They've had the eBay store for ages, then added the Shopify store presumably to reduce eBay's fee cut. The website is functional and the goods are exactly as described, it doesn't have to be flashy.

Plenty of people have done orders as well as RMAs with no issues; word of mouth gives more confidence than a well-written textbox.

  • +3

Finally bit the bullet! Now to rebuild my Plex server…

    • About to do the same for my jellyfin NAS. Going from 17tb to 43tb is going to be great.

Now I just need some SSDs for caching.

  • I got one lastime. It works ok but it seems very loud?

I have a wd one and it's almost silent. This one alot of clicks and spin buzzing noises when accessing the disk. Wondering if that's normal for this model?

    • it might very well be on its way out. Do not put sensitive data on it. and run a SMART test

    • +1

They are enterprise drives, which are usually loud. Most of the time they go in a datacenter where it doesnt matter much.

    • +1

Exos is the enterprise model meant to be used in servers/datacenter so they don't try to make it quiet, the fans in those places are so loud it really doesn't matter how noisy the HDD. It's normal for enterprise drive to be loud.

I have some WD whitelabel enterprise drives I got out of MyBook enclosures and in the enclosures they put all this rubber trim to make it quieter but once you have taken it out and put it into your PC it's quite noisy too.

      • +1

        Ok thanks. Seems normal then

        • did not knwo this. ty for update all :)

  • never Seagate, had too many failures with them during the 750GB and 1TB drives era. Since then have been on WD drives and no failures

    • this was years ago, and i remember the 750GB model specifically had issues hahahaha, u sure they still having issues?

      • +1

After losing data, it becomes difficult to trust a brand again. Since then have to stuck to WD. I bought 3 x xbox 12TB game drives back in 2021 for $300 each. Shucked them and it had WD Ultrastar DC HC520. They are serving me well.

        • yeeeeh. data loss is… well in terms of business. Death. i totally understand your hesitancy.

        • My experience is the opposite and I have had more WD failures than Seagate over my lifetime. I’ve had the fewest with Toshiba.

The key thing really is to check user reports for bad batches, enable SMART reporting, maintain a data backup offsite, and just accept that all of your HDDs will either die or be replaced someday.

  • +2

Really needs to be stated in the title that these drives are not new!

No mention of it in the body either.

    It's really not that hard!

  • Have this exact recert drive from Neology, just last month it began failing and was spitting out heaps of smart errors. Sent it back for a warranty replacement and the replacement has passed all checks.

  • Not a deal. Just a refurb. I’ve bought new drives from this mob for about this price.

  • Typo: ‘Refurbished’
    Thanks

So, the new drives cost only $17 more. This maybe a safer option.

    • Yeah… with that small a difference in price I do tend to agree.
