IMO the 4:30 date window is just blegh.

      • +2

It's stealth though… You can't really see it as the window is black. Also it keeps the dial symmetrical unlike the previous model.

    • +3

the flag on your profile, the name 'gasman'… i'm so confused.

  • +1

    SRPK75J is $605, ATL I believe.

    • $514.25 after adding to cart

Alpinist with blue dial and bracelet SPB249 is also a great price at $684.25 delivered.

6R35 for this kind of money. Seiko is really pushing it.

    • +2

6R55 in these models but yeah.

      • Thanks for correcting. But yes, this kind of money for 6R55.

$1000 for a watch. That is crazy.

      • That's what a deployment clasp costs.

      • -3

        sweet summer child

      • +3

        that is crazy

To who? Some people spend $100k on a car when a $25k will do. Is that not equally as crazy?

        People have different hobbies.

        • -7

A little different since the 100k cars come with features that the 25k dont have and feel so much better when driving. I dont know what difference a $1000 watch would have to a $100 one aside from lasting as long as 10 $100 watches But yes hobbies is a different thing.

          • -4

@vlahka: i agree with you 100% bro. spending $1000 is crazy.

            • @michaelTito: Looks like the watch bros have gotten offended.

              • -2

@vlahka: They all sound as snobby as what people said about them.

        • -2

to me and May4th bro. what else you think i was talking to?

      • Its a Japanese watch…If you think 4 figures is expensive, wait until you get to the entry level luxury segment like Omega.

These days less than $1000 only gets you a solar watch.

        • "Japanese watch… 4 figures"

4 digits (high 4) is the mere entry point for Grand Seiko- Japanese.

        • -1

A solar powered watch can be bought under $500 and even under $200 brand new (still available for certain brand). My Citizen solar powered watch was under $150 during Black Friday when I bought it.

These Seiko solar powered watches are great too under $500:
          https://starbuy.com.au/seiko-prospex-mens-dive-watch-sne573p…

          https://starbuy.com.au/seiko-prospex-mens-watch-sne583p/

          https://starbuy.com.au/seiko-prospex-mens-watch-sne585p/

I don't like automatic watch, less accurate and short power reserve in general compared with Quartz or Solar powered watch. My cheap solar powered watch has 6 months power reserve and more accurate than most automatic watches in the market no matter the price. Most watches are not for investment either. We won't get profit from reselling our watches.

          • -6

@neoleo: i just looked up automatic watch apparently they run up to couple mins late or fast every month? and people spend $1000 for this "feature"? haha thats crazy

            • @michaelTito: People spend big amount of money for the design, pride, and satisfaction. The links above that I put are more than enough for most men with great design, maintenance free as it is solar powered, no need to change battery for very very long time like 10 or even 20 years or more according to some people who have solar powered watch already for very long time.

              I am interested with this:
              https://starbuy.com.au/citizen-promaster-mens-dive-watch-bn0…

              • -1

@neoleo: see $300 is not too bad. this one actually look nicer than the $1000 one too. rofl people really fall for the marketing ploy that get them to pay $1000 for a watch?

            • @michaelTito: I don't really think you should be negged but if you're looking at accuracy as the only factor for mechanical watches, you're missing the point.

I'd go into why people are interested in mechanical watches but it's honestly an appreciation best left for someone to naturally acquire as they mature.

Yes, at first it seems silly to pay more for something functionally inferior.
However, if you can appreciate that wrist watches can go beyond their ability to tell the time, you may begin to understand.

              • -1

@O15: no way bro. That is actually crazy to spend more than $50 on a watch. Thats like buying a range rover when you can buy a 1999 camry. cant believe people fall for this whole marketing thing.

                • @michaelTito: So you're completely against people buying art, buying nice clothes, going out to dinner, having hobbies?

Not sure if you're young, trolling or what. It probably doesn't matter. Either way, you'll grow up.

          • @neoleo: I also much prefer quartz. Automatic you end up needing to set the thing every time you wear it and I find that annoying. Quartz all the way for me.

            • -5

@gakko: people are actually spending more so they can adjust the time every time they want to wear their watch? damn the more i think about it the crazier it gets.

              • @michaelTito: Watches are pretty much redundant these days to tell the time. We all have phones now.

It's more of an expression of personality, status, fashion etc.

Why do people still love manuals when a DCT is faster. Why ICE when EV is faster off the line? It's because mechanical things like automatic watches just tickle that primal part of alot of men's brains like a nice manual and v8.

Also, you should know that people spend their money in crazy ways, for example : $4000 gaming PC's, $600 leather boots, pokemon cards, after market car parts like rims and exhausts, expensive clothing, luxury cars, Wagyu beef, spring water, property.. Could go on. Not sure why you are so suprised lol

                • -1

@Circly: Why does it sound like they all have something in common. 😅

                • @Circly: Someone else is spending more money on something than I can afford to/justify.

                  This is unacceptable.

                  • -2

@O15: rofl you think spending $1000 on a watch is a flex. says a lot about the "watch community" this is the same as buying an iphone and flexing it on social media.

                    • @michaelTito: Do you get caffeine tablets from the chemist or you drink barista made coffee?

                      • -1

                        @Chinese: I dont drink coffee.

                        • @michaelTito: Good. You save $4 a cup. Now, you can start a new post - What's the point of paying $4 for a cup of coffee.

                          • -4

@Chinese: Some people need coffee to function. You don’t need a $1000 watch to go to work. That was a really bad take. Try again and find another example bro.

                            • @michaelTito: "don’t need a $1000 watch to go to work"

                              How do you know?

                            • @michaelTito: No one actually need coffee to function. Anyone who does is addicted and have trained their brain to the point it requires an external stimulant just to get to a normal baseline.

                              • @cmoddoo: you just explained what caffeine does to you. i guess these people have the same problem with watches lol

                          • @Chinese: Bro?

              • @michaelTito: Automatic watches also need servicing because they inevitably break down. Just so you have a bit more fuel here :)

                • -3

@gakko: Sounds like landfill to me.

                  • @michaelTito: Honestly you should really avoid watch posts. You don't bring anything constructive and only criticism or belittle the people who enjoy them. Go to a bargain deal that you enjoy rather than badmouthing people who like to purchase watches.

                    • -2

@maverickjohn: its a open forum bro. i can do whatever i want. why dont you just ignore my comment and move on then? why the need to reply and badmouthing me. the irony?

                      • +2

@michaelTito: Hahaha I think you should re read my comment. There's no badmouthing there. And since you aren't bringing anything constructive to this thread it should be you who moves. As much as I would love to go past your comments, you have unfortunately flooded this post with comments. Makes it a bit hard.

                        • @maverickjohn: i know its hard for you guys to take criticisms. its ok i understand that. but you dont need to reply to comments you dont like.

                      • @michaelTito: Open forum yes, but flooding it with negative posts is weird.

Criticising others because they want and can afford a different lifestyle, is just plain jealousy.

                        • @dachosenone: LOL a guy who buys gaming PC criticising other people for buying watches. Some would argue an adult spending $1-3k on a PC to play games is crazy - it's immature and a waste of time and money.

                          • @keejoonc: I can see the merit in a $100 casio, as well as a 50k rolex. You do what you want in life and if a 500k lambo makes you happy, or a 25k MG does it for you, then you should do either without the jealous people here making snide remarks.

Im noticing it more and more on ozb. Theres a layer of people who when money or a luxury item is mentioned, they get all sensitive and critical of others who buy better things than they do.

            • @gakko: When people have more automatic watches, maybe better to have this for maintaining the watches:

Out of stock. That was fast.

  • Beautiful watch but the movement is overpriced. Gains time way too easily

  • I picked up the SPB453 instead as it was still in stock..

    • $1186 is a great deal on that model.

      • I've been looking at it for a while, haven't seen it that low before, thanks for the post. Did you pick up anything?

        • +1

          You're welcome!

Yup I got the model I posted.

I was tossing up between the SPB451 and SPB455.. Couldn't go wrong either way…

If there was a baby alpinist (green dial) on sale I'd be tempted to get that too! Not totally sold on the one with the blue dial.

          • +1

@Circly: Nice man! I was in between SPB455 and 453 but I think 453 would've been more versatile. I had 143 before but found it too chunky so I let go of it. This should wear much better on my 6.5" wrist with the new dimensions. I already have a blue dial, so didn't go for 451 haha.

  • Very nice

  • Retail is $2350.

Seiko really are pricing themselves out of the market.

Will be interested to see where they land in the next few years because "brand credibility" can only take you so far, and when you have watches that cost half as much with better features, people will start forgetting the brand equity.

    • I kind of agree a little, better to wear a fifty dollar casio and 10 grand of worth of gold cuban link

    • In their defence this is the anniversary model.. The black and blue version of this watch (without the extra strap) is at $1950 rrp.

Still expensive but yeah… Who pays retail for a Seiko.

At $1398 for this or $1186 for the black/blue models it really is a decent deal. I tried it on in the shops and it feels like an expensive watch.

  • Good looking watch, it's leaning on the Tudor Black Bay a little hard but props to Seiko they are a sick brand

  • Off topic but I treated myself to the (imo) beautiful SSK041J from @StarBuy today. Can't wait to see it in person

    • +1

      Very nice
Can’t go wrong with cocktail time presage range

      • I may be a bit fuzzy in the head ATM but I am obsessed with mini divers, I mean, where the strap isn't pink and all lol

  • +2

Thanks OP, picked up the limited edition SPB409J for $1,276 (with points club discount). Will claim on TRS when leaving the country to bring it down to $1,160.

    • +1

      That's a bargain!

    • +2

lol I missed that one. Copped as well to add to my TRS stack. Thanks for the heads up

      • +2

I got the SPB143. Been wanting it for years

        • +1

That's very nice. I have a Save The Ocean 62MAS, and too many overpriced Seiko divers so got a couple of alpinists

          • +1

@rosebank: I came very close to getting that MAS from Qantas but then saw the 143 which I preferred. I’m a sucker for a sunburst dial. It’s added to my collection of 3 handers

Now hunting for rubber straps. Do you know if Seiko use the fat skinny bars on the MAS (the one with the 2mm body and 1.1mm tips or do they use the regular tips?)

            • +2

              @Gunnar: https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/446913/116014/62mas.jp…

Dunno, this is an old photo but I can check for you later.

              2mm body and 1.1mm tips

pretty sure it's this, that's how it is on the sumo I'm wearing

              • +1

@rosebank: I thought they were the same chunky bars as they have on the others. Which is annoying because there’s a ton of straps I like which I can’t use because the spring bars would be smaller

                PS nice GS GMT

  • +1

Finally something to buy. Got the SPB377J to go with my SARB017. Thanks OP

SSC939P for $650 is not bad I have the pogue and too many speedies.

Seiko has always made midmarket and upmarket watches, but in Australia they've mostly been in the background of their cheap and reliable standard range. Now they're whittling back the lower end stuff and repositioning towards the mid market. No doubt they're gonna lose some fans along the way, but there are plenty of microbrands out there now doing interesting stuff in the $200-$400 area, and Casio, Citizen, Timex etc have wide ranges of affordable and ok quality watches. Brands evolve their offerings, so be it.

    • Another problem is a lot of their dive watches are between 13-14mm thick where a lot of micro or smaller brands can squeeze it down to 11-12mm. And their accuracy is horrible on the mid range watches.

I used to be a big Seiko fan but after many years they just really don't know what their fans want anymore.

    • I have cheap Citizen solar powered watch that I bought under $150 during Black Friday. Seiko is not that cheap for me, even though I can buy Seiko straightaway if I want and I have money.

These Seiko solar powered watches are great under $500:
      https://starbuy.com.au/seiko-prospex-mens-dive-watch-sne573p…

      https://starbuy.com.au/seiko-prospex-mens-watch-sne583p/

      https://starbuy.com.au/seiko-prospex-mens-watch-sne585p/

But these watches are quite small for me in my opinion. I am thinking about this:
      https://starbuy.com.au/citizen-promaster-mens-dive-watch-bn0…

    • "midmarket and upmarket" Seiko is and was never an upmarket brand.

They have split out GS (like the Lexus of Toyota) for the more upmarket segment.

Then above that, you have Hublot, then Patek Philippe. In the grand scheme of things, Seiko is for the low end, GS is the mid point.

      • GS is really targeted for upmarket, while Seiko for mid in term of price. Unlike Citizen, you can't find new diver watch Seiko under $400, can you? The prices of GS in general are really targeted for upmarket.

I can see that Seiko > Citizen in term of price with similar style.

        • https://www.citizenwatch-global.com/caliber0100/index.html Nor GS (or any other watch makers) has anything like this, and this is Citizen's flagship movement. But this doesn't put Citizen in the same league as a GS.

The exception is Seiko is their diver/LX, housing the 5R64 spring drive. At the same time, pricing is GS territory.

All about perception. Patek Philippe is where high end of the market starts. GS from a pricing point of just made the cut for the higher end of the mid range market, and I would say their spring drive is the best value movement out there.

          • @Chinese: I like the Bulova Jet Star for its smooth sweep.

The Caliber 0100 seems impressive for its accuracy but I don't think it's that important for most watch owners these days… It's all about that smooth sweep.

Citizen produce too many budget collab watches which cheapens the brand a bit. I think their dive watches / tsuyosa line are good value though.

            • @Circly: Well, seiko 5 can be had in the $200 mark. All the same movement, just different colour housing. In fact, Seiko has been doing this to their other lines as well, look at Prospex, every one is a "limited edition" https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15733263/redir. I am less keen on such marketing tactic. Favourites are still the sumo and shogun from Seiko, at least they are unique.

Overall, citizen and seiko are cheap watches. Reflected in the watch's movement and finish (doesnt matter what they claim or a mere few hundred dollars difference - more of marketing than anything).

0100 is a master piece. Having said that, snowflake/galaxy watch are still my daily/favourite.

        • I think Credor is the upmarket branding, Grand Seiko is mid to upmarket, Seiko is still entry to mid.

  • +1

Meh, every watch Seiko releases is a special edition now days.
