    • Better be extra special to be $1000+ this is like people buying a $2000 iPhone and call it 16 pro plus max 😂

  • I'm not particularly familiar with watches and the watch market but what makes somewhat ordinary looking watches like this one so expensive? A couple years ago I got a seiko that was advertised here on sale for like $400 that had an automatic movement as well as a clear glass back and an open heart which I would expect to be worth way more than this one - except it wasn't. What sets the price of watches without the brand recognition like Rolex or Omega etc.

    • What model was it?

Seiko prices have gone up in recent years.

Some things that people look at when purchasing watches:

      • size
      • glass type
      • open heart
      • movement
      • craftsmanship / details
      • band type
      • rarity / special edition
      • homage
      • material of case /bracelet
      • engineering
      • The model I got was SSA423J for $399 sale, can't recall what the usual price was. I suppose with no knowledge I'd have no idea what it is that ultimately sets a watch price other than obvious things like case + band material (stainless steel, platinum etc) as well as open hearts or precious jewels added.

What is the difference between my watch and this one that makes the price difference? This watch has seemingly fewer 'premium' features than mine has so I'm curious.

        • That Presage is pretty nice!

Just comparing the specs I spot a few differences (besides the open heart of the Presage).

          • Presage has 50m water resistance VS 300m. Presage I probably wouldn't want to immerse in water or go swimming in it (not like you would), the SPB45X series can be used for actual diving.
          • Presage has hardlex glass VS sapphire glass on SPB45X. Sapphire is more expensive and generally the glass used on higher end watches as it has better scratch resistance.
          • Presage has a lower tier movement
          • Presage has 40 hour power reserve VS 72 hour power reserve. You wouldn't be able to set the Presage down on Friday night and pick it up on Monday and still have it running, unlike the SPB45X models.
          • SPB probably has better workmanship (my guess), although the Presage lines are pretty nice too.
          • other differences are date function on SPB and rotating bezel (this is useful for diving).

Not sure if the above totally explains the cost. However, as I mentioned in the post, the one I linked was the special edition model with fancy box and extra strap which cost $200 more than the black or blue version of the watch. So to be fair its closer to $500 VS $1100. Also, these watches only released a few months ago.

          • @Circly: Ah okay I see what you mean, it makes sense that all the little premium extras that I wouldn't really notice would definitely add up and increase the watch value, potentially significantly.

Thanks a lot for taking the time and effort to answer my questions, I appreciate it. Could I also ask what makes a movement better or worse than another? To me it seems that they should all be pretty similar since they share the same purpose. Is it things like better material, higher efficiently, tighter tolerances?

            • @crap: No worries!

Difference in movements can include :

              • more complexity Ie. Some have additional date complications or chronograph functions
              • size. Some movements need to be thinner and smaller to fit into cases
              • power reserve
              • accuracy
              • vibration frequency. You can get a smoother sweep if it vibrates at a higher frequency.
              • workmanship /detail
              • aesthetics
              • magnetic resistance.

There might be other features of movements but the above is just off the top of my head. I think what is considered a better movement is subjective.

The movement in this watch, the 6R55 apparently can have some variances in accuracy.. Some people gain 2s a day and others 30s. So it might be a mixed bag. The 4R movements in your Presage is a good movement too.

Edit* just found a promo video of the watch in the OP (actually previous 143 model but 90% the same) and it seems pretty cool. So I guess the history aspect also impacts on the $$ they price these at.

Took me a while to get the Diver's extension open to remove some of the plastic wrapping in there lol.

    • Mine arrived but unfortunately my crown was acting up… went to the Seiko boutique in CBD town hall to send it off for a service. I went in to the boutique to compare the models they had instore, and it was definitely better than the one i received.
A real shame… downside of mechanical watches.

      • Oh no. What do you mean it was acting up?

The hands weren't moving properly when setting the time?

Tbh the Seiko boutique should have just swapped your watch for a new one??

So, as you know with screw down crowns, you would unscrew until it hits the first click to set the date, second click for adjusting the time. For some reason it keeps getting stuck before the first click. I had the sales rep test it out and agreed that it was strange as well as comparing it with a model they have on display.

Yeah, honestly, I wish it was that easy, but I don't think that's how it works. In the invoice I see there's registration card that I believe might be attached to the watch. I didn't actually ask as the reason made sense to me, but I should've asked anyway.

I'm pretty sure luxury brands like Tudor, Omega etc. work the same way once a sale is made. Hope I get it back sooner than expected!

@ferds: Hope it gets looked and fixed soon! I'm suprised QC didn't pick that up…
