Have 2 of these already and they are great Waiting for the reasonably new 8TB SN850X to go on sale so I'll save the pennies

    • How much did you pay? Is $407 the lowest ever?

      • +7

Paid $380 here on Amazon for each one last December so this is not an all time low
Just be aware this is a double sided NVME unlike the singlesided Samsung 990 Pro 4tb which I also have 2 of . You may or may not have problems placing in ultra slim laptop

        • Thank you :)

        • I'm curious, how are you using them?

          • +1

@Caped Baldy: Mass storage in 2 laptop secondary NVME slots and also 2 enclosures I keep offsite for data safety No problems in laptops or nvme thunderbolt enclosures

            • @glyptothek: Can you recommend your nvme thunderbolt enclosure. does it work well (can it hit its max speed)/ keep drives cool enough. Looking to get a couple drives and throw them in an enclosure

              • +1

@abschicken: MAIWO K1719 USB4 40Gbps M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure Aluminium Alloy M.2 External Case Compatible with Thunderbolt 4 Type-C NVME M.2 SSD Case
Super heavy Aluminium allow case, works with TB3, TBV4, USB4, Usb 3.2 USB 3.1 Usb 3.0 Usb 2 dual chip , and speeds great Its important to remeber TB3/TB4 state 40Gbps, but that is TOTAL transmisssion rate for DP and TB not TOTAL for TB3/TB4

                • @glyptothek: Hey does having setup like this where enclosure seems to be about $100 on top of $400 ssd better than buying SanDisk 4TB Extreme Portable SSD
I just needed 4tb storage space so I could backup my computer and upgrade to windows 11.

                  • +1

@AccessMax: Whatever suits you best Just be aware if you upgrade laptop/enclosure/desktop the memory inside the Sandisk 4tb may NOT be transferrable/exchangeable I also have a 2TB Sandisk G-Disk with 1Gbps transfer rate which I can open up and see there is a cheap SD dramless NVME inside

        • I am probably going to grab a Samsung 990 Pro 4TB but I have not seen them on sale anywhere close to $400. What is the best price anyone has seen on one?

        • What's the difference between single and double sided? Sorry for the question I have an Asus M5606 trying to workout if this would fit or not

          • @Boxcuttahz: Memory chips on one side, or both sides - meaning double sided is slightly thicker

        • fits in the PS5 ?

    • +3

I've purchased a few 1/2/4tb ssd's over the last 3 years (upgrading laptop ssd's and replacing then re-replacing the ssd drive in the ps5 lol). Instead of doing it properly the first time…..l'd get a lower size ssd…… before "updating" to a bigger size (so thus I've spent more in the long run - as opposed to just buying the highest size available at the time).

I'm waiting on another good deal for a 4tb ssd to update my final ssd slot in my most recently purchased laptop.
Then I can relax……… until one of the previously purchased ssd's breaks down and I need to replace it - thus starting the merry-go-round again.

  • 299/- deal not so long ago. For another 4tb nvme

    • Which one was it?

        • that's quite good of a deal

          • +2

@Undercut 2241: Yes but it is dramless aka only for storage as will be slower and Im not sure if its QLC and a not very good controller

            • @glyptothek: It's TLC guaranteed. Pretty much better value than this deal. NAND is even better than this, the controller did have some issues but still fast and reliable

              • +1

@Meteor Anarcom: Can't see how 232-layer YMTC NAND is better than 112-layer WD-Toshiba NAND. TBW ratings are whatever the brand wants to put on it for marketing reasons.

            • +4

              @glyptothek:

dramless aka only for storage as will be slower

Slower at what ? This is only true for some very niche use cases.

Modern drives work just fine without DRAM - for normal use, you won't notice any difference between the two. As an example, OS Boot Times and Game Load Times will be almost identical.

            • @glyptothek: dramless - no thanks!

  • +1

not bad in this economy, love mine. stupidly fast but not for everyone

  • Will it burn without a sink?

    • Yes

      • +1

not necessarily In a decent NVME emclosure and decent laptop I've never has problems with heath throttling As for the Samsung, well multiple problems and the Samsung 4tb doesnt play nice in an NVME enclosure unless it has a separate power supply

        • In a laptop there is usually a thermal pad to transfer heat to the case, that is why some configurations recommend single sided nvme drives.

    • If you push Gen 4 SSDs to the limit, most likely. If you use it w/ a PCIe Gen 3 interface, no.

  • +6

one of my sn850x's just died. Hardly used, i think it overheated when i started transferring a bunch of files to it.

Now need to warranty this 2year old drive… what a pain.

    • +1

well hope the warranty works and you get a new drive i assume ?

keep us updated in the process !

      • +1

twist in the story, after my pc cooled down (overnight I guess?) the drive now boots again and via WD software and SMART data, everything is fine with it. No errors or anything. I guess when it overheated, it went into some self protection state and even on reboots it wouldn't connect?

Thinking i should buy a nvme heatsink for it, idle temp in my SFF is 60C so pretty high. I did notice during the transfer the other day it was sitting at 94C which is above the operating temp….

        • +1

Modern SSDs are usually rated to 70c - not 94c.

Even if it's working again now that it's cooled down, there's no telling how damaged it is.

Thinking i should buy a nvme heatsink for it

It's too late now, I wouldn't trust that drive again now that you've cooked it.

          • @Nom: If anything, it was probably the controller, and if it's working now then it's probably fine.
            Some people worry about nothing.

  • i have no use for Gen 4 so i'm currently sitting on the fence getting the Team MP34 4TB @ PCCG for $319. might wait for black friday and see if any drops for 4TB

    • +1

The MP34 4TB is a great storage drive and also boot drive Good DRAM cache and speedy Have this as a boot/storage partitioned drive in a one slot video laptop and also as a storage drive in another laptop Both from PCCase Gear Snap it up now becasue these are out of production and will soon be impossible to find

  • +5

I'd hold. Black Friday round the corner.

  • +5

$100 per TB is expensive - unless you have a very specific need for this drive's performance then just buy https://www.mwave.com.au/product/silicon-power-ud85-4tb-m2-n… for $100 less.
For normal use, performance difference between the two is barely noticeable.

  • when will we ever get $250 for 4TB

  • Updated new price is $401.28
