What's it like as a monitor?

    • +5

Love it, as long as your desk is 80cm or more deep.

Need to customise brightness, pixel protection and refresh rate. Plenty of info on reddit.

      • +1

        @cycloneaussie @Ahbal @h047j9fg9j83p

Do any of you have yours on a monitor arm? Any suggestions of which arm to go with without spending $400?

        TIA

        • I’ve still got it on the stand, looking to wall mount it with a slim profile bracket.

    • +12

You'll struggle to go back to any other monitor after.

        • Gotta give the screen a bit of hawk tuah before you clean it

    • +3

Im using a C2 42" as a monitor. Its incredible.

    • -3

You can only turn it on/off manually, it's a TV.

      • +17

No, it functions as a monitor. with LGTV companion app it turns off on shutdown and powers on when booting PC.

        • Is there any boot time from a cold boot/loss of power? All smart TVs I've used take a while to boot the OS which is why I've been more inclined to look for a monitor over Smart TV.

Does the Auto Power on with the computer work only if it remains in Standby mode, or can it do it if it loses power?

          • @Thooperman: My entire office PC setup incl. monitor is on a smart switch.

When I say “Alexa computer on”, everything turns on from zero power (incl monitor), and by the time the PC is at the login screen the monitor is on.

          • +1

@Thooperman: It requires "Wake via Wi-Fi" to be enabled on the TV for it to work. Have a look here:

            • +1

@deadpoet: Yep. My remote lives in the cupboard with the batteries removed. Occasionally I have to use the remote, to accept updates or new terms and conditions with hidden forced arbitration agreements. The usual 2024 stuff.

  • +2

Personally I have it in my bedroom as TV only, too big for my desk at home

  • +5

    Just bought it only $1164.50

    • +1

      Where? and how?

      • +9

call JB price match with $1370 at appliance central
After get deal add code15% off to cart then pay

        • +1

15% not stacking up after price match ? Unsure what’s wrong it’s says coupon does not exist ?

        • -1

          Tempting

        • Can you also use 10% off gift card and claim GST…………..
          mark it under 1k………….

        • Same

          • @cyrax83: It isn’t clear who you are replying to. Same as in it wouldn’t stack? Or same as in you got it for $1164.50?

            • +1

@Morien: 15% code not applying on price match

            • +1

@Morien: Look like I’m lucky to use code with price match.
I received the code by email and jump straight to price match but don’t say any code can use. After received the deal then apply

              • @endyking: Weird because the rep also mentioned i can use the code on top of the price match but it's not applying. I didn't even mention the code.

                • +2

@cyrax83: They may blocked that part later. I make my payment very quickly and confirm for pickup after 5min

        • Can you show something so the rest of us mortals can ask for the same deal? Thanks mate

          • @psyphon11: Just call JB to price match. Don’t tell you have any discount code.
After received deal then use it

            • @endyking: They wouldn't honour the code on top of any deal. As the guys above have said.

              • @psyphon11: Yep just spoke to JB again and they said cant apply voucher with price match oh well

  • Amazing price

  • C2 vs c4?

    • +19

      c4 wins by 2pts

    • +7

      Twice as good

    • +21

c2 is ok, c4 is explosive

  • +5

It is too small to use for watching, but too large to use as a monitor.

    • +7

Use c2 as a monitor works great

      • May I know the depth of your desk?

        • +3

Not OP but my desk is 800mm deep and I have the 42" C2 as my main monitor, definitely not too large at that distance.

        • 80cm, works a treat

        • +2

"and it's me you need to show…

          how deep is your desk..?"

          • @clandestino: I see you have the same "everything is a song" brain as me.

  • +1

Anyone who owns one, does this do PIP .. ie: games console / YouTube and work laptop at the same time 😜

    • +1

I’d like to know as well

  • +2

pretty good price - the c3 never got this cheap and we will never see c2 type prices again [under $1000]

    • good summary.

Paid under 1K for my C2 but would be happy paying $1270 if I needed another or it was worth upgrading.

  • Burn in is my only concern otherwise I would get one :^(

    • +4

I’ve used my C2 42 every week day for at least 8-10 hours in the last 2.5 years. No burn in issues.

It’s recommended to have some settings to avoid burn in, hide all task bars, have black wallpaper and avoid having brightness above 50-60

      • My aorus 48 is fine after a couple years. Agree it's vital to have the brightness down a bit.

    • +2

@captainmac - I currently own and use in my lounge room the objectively best consumer OLED TV released to date, a 2023/2024 77” Sony A95L QD-OLED TV (which had an RRP of $9500 when it was available for a short time here in Australia, I bought it brand new from Harvey Norman for $6500), and I also own and use in my bedroom a 2019 65” LG C9 WOLED TV, and I wouldn’t risk using either of them as computer monitors due to the possibility of burn in. I work from home currently 2 days a week, I use a 34” curved ultra wide LCD/WQHD monitor for work when I am working at home… My work applications and the Microsoft system software menus would burn in on an OLED TV after prolonged use/exposure, there is no denying that fact it’s just the nature of the technology… I certainly wouldn’t use my own personal OLED TVs to do my job and risk damaging them for the sake of my employer.

If you’re going buy this for a computer monitor to play mostly modern video games on it or you intend to watch a lot of movies and TV show content that’s not free to air, then yes it would suffice quite well as a monitor and I don’t think you should worry too much about burn in, however if your intention is to display a lot of static software menus for work purposes or personal use, I would steer clear from using this 42” C4 OLED TV as a computer monitor, and OLED tech in general.

I own OLED TVs because I own a large 1080p Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray collection, and that’s what makes up the majority of my viewing on them (I also use them for a little bit of gaming on various PlayStation and Xbox consoles, and for watching some content on paid streaming services), however if you’re not regularly watching these high quality physical media sources that currently generally provide the highest picture and audio quality available, then an OLED is kind of wasted on people that don’t, and I question why they really need and want one if they’re simply going to watch inferior quality from other lower quality sources on it.

      • Depending on how long you’re going to keep it it doesn’t really matter.

LG replace all panels for burn in up to and past 5 yrs old anyway

        • -5

@cille745 - The majority of people purchase a TV to own and last them quite a number of years, much closer to or for more than a decade, not for 1-2 years like you’re suggesting, implying that most people treat TVs like throw away items and upgrade quicker than than they do iPhones. Furthermore, the majority of people that do purchase high end TV models, like the TV I mentioned in my previous post which I currently own as my primary TV, the Sony 77” A95L QD-OLED that’s objectively the best performing TV in the majority of areas (winning the Value Electronics 2023 and 2024 TV shootout events), don’t plan on only keeping them for a short amount of time and quickly dispose of them replacing them with something else.

Your comment about LG replacing all panels that suffer from burn in up to and past 5 years old is certainly utter nonsense and is clearly coming from someone that has no idea what they’re on about, who is making up BS. I have successfully gone through LG’s panel replacement process with LG Australia for my 2019 65” LG C9 OLED TV when it was just over 4 years old last November in 2023, done at LG’s expense for all parts and labour under ACL. I also have inside experience having worked in the local industry for companies such as Universal Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Australia who sadly in 2023 disbanded and are no longer the local distributor, and my brother worked for one of Australia’s largest retailers that sells TVs for 18 years up until about 5 years ago, and still has many friends and contacts within the industry.

          • @[Deactivated]: I am not disagreeing with anything you’re saying. If you get burn in and get the panel replaced at 4 years in you’ll get 8 years in total - while not great id say it’s acceptable.

Not sure what you’re on about with LG replacing panels, there’s 10+ examples of LG replacing panels 5+ years old on both here and whirlpool and you’ve had it done yourself?

            • +1

@cille745: So now you’ve changed what you originally said which was “LG replace all panels for burn in up to and past 5 yrs old anyway” which is absolutely not true, to “if they do”. A handful of cases on Ozbargain and Whirlpool hardly come close to representing LG OLED customers nationwide… There being some small percentage of examples online where LG Australia have agreed to replace the panel when burn in has occurred, is a long stretch from saying “LG replace all panels for burn in up to and past 5 yrs old anyway”.

              • +1

@[Deactivated]: LG replaces all panels for those who pursue their rights under ACL (and you don’t need to push for it either)

Problem is most people either don’t, or don’t even try to get a replacement

                • @cille745: Again, that’s not true at all, you’re misinforming people about the risks of burn in and the remedy, and are making up stories about the risk and the solution being simple. LG certainly do not replace all panels for those that pursue their rights under ACL, who push it or not.

    • Burn in risk is dependent on how you use it. I've got a 2016 oled55b6 which is still going strong with no burn in. Occasional image retention which clears free a pixel refresh. As long as you aren't setting the brightness to a level to replicate the sun and aren't leaving static images, they're fine. Most of the time I crank down the brightness, they get quite bright when you're watching HDR movies.

Even if there are static parts of the screen, it's not too bad as long as the brightness is reasonable. About 6000 hours of the use of my TV had the destiny 2 HUD on it and it's fine. However, if you're watching a lot of news with the bright bars down the bottom, I've seen what they've done to other OLED TVs.

    • +13

      Breaks too easily

  • +3

42 Inches? Do you even watch bro?

    • I am old enough to remember most people using 14" monitors.
Not long ago some people would say a 21" FullHD (1080p) monitor was too big.
Today where I work the office has 34" ultrawide (1440p) for everyone, of course some said these were too big. Now I feel they are small.

42 inches 4K (2160p) monitor is not about seeing bigger, you can of course, but for me it is equivalent to 4 x 21" FullHD monitors glued together.

For work: amazing because you have so much space for multi-tasking, it is big enough so you don't need scaling.

For gaming: 120Hz with AMD and Nvidia sync, low latency, 1ms pixel response time, HDR, perfect blacks… it is the best gaming monitor you can buy.

For movies: OLED TV is still there best there is…

      • @gelilloabad - The organisation I work for in the office we have 5120x2160 40” ultrawide monitors, that have a price tag of $2000 each, paid for by tax payers.

        • +1

Nice, I see nothing wrong spending more than the bare minimum on a work tool you use 8 hours a day.

  • Is this really the best TV to use as a monitor, specifically for gaming? Is there anything from Samsung or Sony that's comparable or possibly better?

    • Personal preference, I prefer ultra wide and bit this big but of you play games with a controller and can kick back then it's good .
Not so sure for fps games

      • Thanks mate, appreciate the input.

I'm cool with the size and I do use a controller, so that should be fine. I don't play competitively so 144Hz @ 4K still sounds great to me.

I guess I'm wondering if there's anything that tops this in "like for like" comparison.

        • to run this you need a 4090 if you want to get 4k 144 fps
if you want big screen then no, nothing tops this
          smaller and 240hz yes

    • +3

Good luck in finding a 60” this price. Maybe a TCL for you mate

      • -1

Totally fine with TCL mini LED

This is just another expensive monitor. See comments nobody use this in the lounge. Too small. Best effort in bedroom that is

1.2k 42" is not bargain OLED what not

        • +3

OLED is many ways produces superior PQ compared to LED technology.

If this is an expensive monitor, you’re yet to compare with any high end monitors.

        • +3

So it’s not a good deal for you because you don’t think OLED is worth it, therefore not a good deal for anyone.

          • -1

@vorsprung: Sure go ahead and buy it. It's all personal preference. This is only good for a monitor. Same vice versa just cause you think it's a good deal, therefore it's a good deal for everyone

  • Been using a c2 42 as my main working monitor everyday for the last 2.5 years. No burn in issues but I have some measures to reduce the risk (I.e Black wallpaper, hidden task bars etc)

Amazing panel, for 9-5 work monitor and gaming after hours.

    • Would that cause any eye fatigue? How do you manage dividing the screen into multiple areas to complete tasks more efficiently? Thanks.

      • I’m usually on the Mac for my job and I have the snap corner app to easily snap windows into quadrants or splits. But TBH, I’d just usually scatter windows around the display. Windows have their built in windows snapping.

Doesn’t really cause any eye fatigue, just make sure you don’t go beyond 50 OLED brightness.

    • Do you get the pixel cleaning message? It is killing me

      • I’ve only got it once after using it 6-8 months.

This is on the C3 42”

  • Bugger, just bought the other day for 1370. Does JB have a price guarantee?

    • +6

      @Priceisright: I guess the price wasn't right…

      • After a long drought of good deals, I prematurely clicked buy…

  • +1

Thanks! I bought it for $1495 - debated whether I wanted to spend that much on a PC monitor and hadn't picked it up. Cancelled existing order & then re-ordered using this. Its a shame they can't just refund the difference but I guess that's the process

Absolute bargain (in terms of inflation since the C2, etc)

  • Why we need 80cm clearance

    • +4

So you have a good seating distance.

Screen is massive. So you'd need to crane your neck side to side if you're too close.
