Im looking for an 85" but not sure how the specs compare with other models. Can anyone share insights with respect to picture quality etc.

  • I've been keeping an eye on the TCL 85C855, is this TV better?

    • +7

Hell no. Step down in panel (bog standard va vs mini led), 60hz vs 144vrr and Dolby atmos. This is the lowest model for Samsung.

C855's are pretty much up there in terms of mini leds, next best thing would be Sony's x90/x95 or step up to OLED

    • +2

They couldn't be more different. C855 is TCL's flagship model in Australia currently, and Samsung's DU7700 is their lowest model I believe, an edge lit LED. Still looks great on the demo reel mind you.

    • +3

50Hz refresh rate and edge lit. No way this TV is even close to the TCL 85C855. The TLC is a premiums TV and this one is not ..

    • Thanks everyone! I'll hang tight. This will teach me to consider brand loyalty in the future! Stay safe OzBargain'ers

  • +3

So like am I missing something or is under $1k for a 75 incher incredible?

    • TCL 75inch has gone under $1K before but not a Samsung so yeah it's a great deal.

      • +5

Honestly though Samsung's low and mid range tv's are nothing to write home about. Specially the way the creep backwards in spec with every release.

        • Would you say in smartphone terms this would be a Galaxy A series of their TV lineup?
They would've cut corners on things like lower brightness, contrast, etc

          • @happyangus: A05 or whatever is in the bottom of the ladder. Q70 would be the minimum I'd look at with Samsung, even then my q70 plays horribly with streaming apps that have hdr (too dark).

Samsung has a knack for downgrading their models. Back maybe 5 years ago the Q60 would've given you 120hz refresh rate. Later Q60 models "downgraded" and no longer provided that, you now had to fork out for the Q70.

    • From time to time there are deals for 75" under $1K usually for TCL or Hisense, not often for a brand like Samsung but it's usually their low end/entry level lines anyways so probably minimal difference in quality

      • and Tizen, if that matters to the individual

      • +2

when at RRP you're arguably better off with a mid range Hisense/TCL

    • Pretty sweet for a name brand. I got a Hitachi 75er almost three years ago for 800 at JB. Before that me dad got a Linsar 75er from TGG for a grand, that was his window. No name ones pop up around that bracket quite often and have for a while. Apparently this is a budget Samsung one though, didn't know they did budget stuff still lol, hope it's decent. Mother in law has an older 55 inch Samsung from forever ago and the picture is still fantastic, so I was pretty impressed when I saw the name, as usual, comments have come along and taken it from me.

  • Sweet deal, thanks for the heads up. Free delivery and the $100 credit from the old deal made this one a great buy.

  • +3

Edge lit 50 Hz VA. I don't think they can say this is good for gaming.

  • +4

    Cheap! But a horrible TV.

  • Not mega familiar with TV tech, can someone explain the "Low Latency Mode"?

Will I experience input lag if I'm playing my Xbox One or similar? Anyone got experience gaming on these TVs?

    • Nothing you’ll notice

    • Mainly turns of most image processing to reduce latency. Unless the processor is horribly slow or you're playing twitch shooters like CS:Go then I'd doubt you'll notice it for more casual gaming.

  • +1

Keep in mind that despite being Samsung, this is a very, very cheap TV with poor image quality.
The Q60D - which gets 2x as bright, has a 1.5x higher contrast ratio and a significantly broader colour gamut - blows it out of the water, despite itself being a budget/ low-end TV.

    • I've got FHD TVs that are close to 10 years old and screen quality has never bothered me so this will be an upgrade as is. The only time that I can see the smallest amount of difference is if there are TVs on the showroom side by side and I've got to really try and spot the difference. I guess I'm the target market for the low end models.

      • +1

it's fine if you don't put a premium TV next to it, you will only notice the difference in store with comparison. if that's what you are used to, you'll be perfectly content

  • +3

Seeing the 'it's 50hz' comments all the time make me dizzy… ITS 60HZ, how many time has this been explained lol

    • +1

Then why does it state 50hz? What makes it 60hz?

      • From an old reddit post with 3.2k upvotes;

There's no difference, as nobody manufactures 50Hz panels. The TVs in Europe and Australia are still advertised as 50 and 100Hz, though, but they are all native 60Hz or 120Hz. They use the 50Hz mode to display TV broadcasts.

Once you feed them with a 60Hz signal, like from a games console, the TV will automatically switch to 60Hz.

In the comparison you bring up between the two TVs, one shop just decided to put up the real refresh rate, while so many companies still use the old 50Hz in their advertisement.

Honestly, it was infuriating when I bought my TV, because every single (profanity) shop and store spoke about 50 and 100Hz, and even the manufacturer's websites didn't mention the 50 vs 60 thing.

It would be insanity to make exclusively 50Hz TVs these days, as even some late CRT tube TVs had 60Hz modes, not to mention the early LCD TVs.

        • Right got you. Thanks for the explanation.

To the current average consumer, such as myself, we mostly go off by the spec sheet and most likely the sales rep do as well to keep everything on paper streamlined to what they say.

I mean, on paper if it says 50hz and a rep said what you said which is in-fact a fact about the manufacturing process and what not, the sales rep and/or the business may suffer and the consumer may want a refund or whatever even though it's true 60hz.

I used to work for Optus retail and we couldn't say anything outside what the manufacturer wrote down about their electronics, even though the real specs may be slightly different.

  • +2

You guys recommend this tv or TCL C655 for a few extra hundred?

    • +1

Tcl, paper specs are leagues ahead. Alot of black crushing on lower end samsungs

    • +1

Also curious on this. Costco has the TCL C655 for almost the same price factoring delivery costs.

  • shame i can't fit 85" in my camry

    • Free delivery from The Good Guys (at least it was for me).

  • The 85" is down to $1495 on TGG eBay now.

  • +1

If you had the item in your TGG website cart, via price check, before they reduced the price, check your cart as the full discount still seems to apply.

  • Will this be better then my 15yo 65 inch plasma? Its starting to not be very bright.

    • +4

if you watch tv a lot… you'll probably save $300 a year just on electricity lol

  • better to wait for November deals on TCL and Sony.

  • 75" damn only 50hz refresh rate….. Not bad price tho

  • What would be a more premium but affordable 65 inch TV you guys would recommend? Any ideas would be much appreciated ☺

    • +1

      TCL C855 as mentioned above

      • +1

Thank you for this, I was hoping $1.5k and under maybe ill just keep waiting for bigger sales

      • The equivalent Sony, LG et alia would still be above $2K. With TCL C855 around $1700 at the moment , delivered, you can hope for a BF deal, however I suspect there is not a lot of fat left in the price for a 65" unless they go into full loss leader mode.

  • I just received an email from JB Hifi with a Perks discount coupon for 15% off all of these special prices - it looks like a unique code.

    • Checkout is showing that the 75inch is $845 with the code

  • A few saying TCL is a better buy, any other brand/model? looking put on my covered deck, so doesn't need to be super premium. I will also have it covered from the elements when not in use.

    • Hisense?

  • +1

Bought this one and can confirm that TizenOS is S**T , there are not many apps available and if that's something you after look away, other than that TV is decent sound is not that bad for this price point

  • Just got the 75" and for the deal price it's a good upgrade. No complaints about picture, sound or features for an entry level. But the sluggish OS is trash. Frustrating when tv menus just become unresponsive and can't even pause the movie…

  • No OLED, No buy ;^)
