    • Does anyone know if I use a remote machine RDP

Yes, if you have a VPN and then RDP into the other machine, yes. I've done it. VPN into my home router and then RDP into my desktop.

what are the additional data costs?

Cannot find anything in concrete, but it is about $2 US. $3.19 per GB for priority, so I would assume it would be less of over-data usage. But could still add up.

    • +1

Does anyone know if I use a remote machine RDP or whatever does is help address the limited included data?

That really depends on what you're doing over remote desktop; it could be worse as e.g. if you scroll up and down a webpage with images, it'll be a bit like constantly watching a streaming video compared to viewing the webpage with a web browser which downloads the image and text just once.

and what are the additional data costs?

Additional data on top of the 50GB is AUD$1.50/GB.

    • I don’t think RDP consumes much data, read this
      https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-desktop/rdp-…

I prefer RDP when constrain by data allowance. We use Microsoft at work, the most data consumption was actually from SharePoint and OneDrive. A typical WFH day consume 10-20GB if I use work laptop physically at home, but that drops to around 5GB or less a day when I left work laptop in the office and do RDP from personal computer at home.

      • I don’t think RDP consumes much data, read this

It fully depends on what you're doing. If you're just working with text, it won't use much - although downloading the text once and working with it locally will use even less data.

If you're watching video, RDP can use more bandwidth than just watching it off YouTube, depending on resolution and whether or not you've enabled RDP's H.264 mode.

If you open a webpage with images (or ads) and scroll around a lot, RDP can use more data than if you just browsed the page directly which downloads everything only once.

the most data consumption was actually from SharePoint and OneDrive

Those apps continually syncs changes every time you do something so data is continually being updated back and forth. That will no doubt use more bandwidth over long sessions than doing it over RDP where all the changes don't need to be continuously synced… unless you're working with video or images of course.

I know it costs more than my fttn but NBN prices keep going up and my line rate is fixed at 60/20 due to "quality" NBN lines. Yes, starlink costs more but I'd be getting more speed to browse ozbargain.

    • +3

I am in the same boat - an hour north of Sydney but stuck on FTTN with no update planned. I get 58/18 on NBN. Software engineer working from home - it is painful.

      • +1

Move to Starlink, it'll be better than that. I was on same FTTN in Warragul VIC, moved to Starlink - Happier than ever and I work in Web Development Full Time WFH.

        • What speeds are you getting on Starlink?

My only worry is that I'm in a rental and not sure how best to get it wired in.

          • +1

@Jayphen: If you have a power point outside for the router and a spot undercover to protect it from the elements , it should be fine.

          • +2

@Jayphen: I am on a Generation 2 Kit so it is a little slower than my Generation 3. But most of the time 200mbps down and 20mbps up.

For rentals it is hard, but if you get the right installer then it can be down with minimal changes to the house.

        • More Warragul homes are due for FTTP in December.

          • @Twix: Yes, I know. But FTTP then only works when the power is on, Starlink is always available power or not.

            • @geekcohen: FTTP works if you have a UPS. How often do you have power outages?

              • +1

@Twix: Not that often, but it can drop out for a few seconds. All my stuff is on UPS anyway. With the storms last week, we had no power for 24 hours and ran Starlink with no problems with a Generator.

Since I had issues with my FTTN, I don't really want to go back to NBN even on FTTP.

                • @geekcohen: Up to you. Personally I would go FTTP as it has faster download/upload, the monthly plans are cheaper and low latency and use mobile or Starlink as a backup.

      • +2

Yup, I'm with leaptel and basically my 50/20 plan costs the same as the 100/20 but I get like 59/20 max for $79.95. Again, yes it's cheaper but (profanity) me NBN. It's almost tempting to sign up with starlink to say F U NBN.

  • +3

Waiting for the Mini to come down then im in!

    • 100%. $799 is expensive, rumour was it was going to be cheaper than a main kit, but it has been the opposite!

  • +1

Stuck here on central coast on a creppy Optus plan! - on the plus side, I think i've single handedly gotten them to change their page in our area to 'max of 80Mb' :-P
Regular dropouts, regular 'almost zero speed' data and ridiculous ping/jitter timings….:-(

even worse is they somehow keep the DSL line synched to prevent the 4G backup from kicking in..
most of the time when we get 'no internet' i have to pull the land line out of the modem.

FIber is scheduled here for late 2025, can't wait.
shame we're locked in with the wife's phone plan, currently spending $250 a month with Optus…
if we weren't stuck for 17 more months then I'd dump the lot in a heartbeat..Gotta run the math though on the remaining $900 buyout vs retaining numbers / data plans etc etc

    • +2

plug a router capable of taking a 4G backup via USB into your fttn modem/router. when it detects no internet connection on the wan port from the fttn modem the 4G will kick in

Good to see they switched back to Cat6 for the new gen, They charge a fortune for the cable on the Gen 2 and it breaks very easily.

    • Even though the Gen 2 is CAT6 cable anyway, it's just with a stupid proprietary connection.

  • Literally reading this while my home NBN Wireless is down. Tempting….. But monthly cost is ouch. Hmmmm.

  • Just ordered one, thanks OP been waiting for this deal to come back.

Edit- > I forgot the referral code, any way to add it after ordering?

    • Edit- > I forgot the referral code, any way to add it after ordering?

No. Has to be done when ordering as the referral code is in the URL.

    • Tweet Elon

  • Can you cancel the subscription or pause it once ordered? I don't need the starlink for 3 months so the discount is eroded by paying 3 months unnecessarily.

    • +1

If you choose the roaming plan, yes. You can pause that service at any time, but that is $195 a month. You cannot pause residential.

      • Right - the roaming looks to be different hardware though so do you happen to know if you can switch to the residential plan from it with the same hardware?

        • Roaming is the same hardware. I switched my Gen 2 for roaming to residential. You can do the same for Gen 3.

You might be looking at the Starlink Mini which is different again.

      • Surely you can just cancel the plan though and then start it back up once you need it?

    • Yea in some plans you can like roaming and global roam. Plans cost more though.

    • -1

ADF already heavily use them, they connect directly to the American military satellites after using encryption devices

      • Love how I was down voted, literally did the raaf tour 4 months ago and they had them out on different squads

  • -2

I would be tempted to go with starlink, if Elon Musk wasn't such a knob.

    • +3

I waiting for this. Took too long

  • +1

I am renting a new house. Landlord ask us to pay for NBN development kit if we wanted to connect to NBN.
With the same price, I guess I will go with starlink, so I can bring it with me when I move out.

    • +2

A-hole LL trying to get you to pay for their shiz.

Hopefully the next tenant knows what’s up.

      • Yea, they didn't care about internet. "It's not essential" they said. "You can use internet on your phone".
The new place is inside 5G coverage area, but some provider, even Telstra said its not eligible for 5G home.
So far I only found it eligible for Optus 5G but with 36 month contract, and canceling fee is the cost of the modem price $468.

    • How will you mount the kit?
On the ground and leave a window open and drop a cable outside?
Or have the device inside near a window?

It looks interesting (we have crappy cable). Not so keen on mounting on roof and looping cat6 and drilling holes in the eaves and running cat6 in the ceiling and dropping downstairs between the double-brick wall to router / switch in the office..

      • Personally I was thinking of getting the ridgeline mount (or putting it on some kind of pole), connecting to a power plug I have outside and running flat cat6 through a windowframe or a doorway to the router indoors.

      • I will mount it on the roof, there are some youtube video about 'no-drill mounting'.

My new place got a small yard between main building and garage, and half of it under the roof. I wouldn't mind placing router outside so I didn't need to drill a hole for cables.
I already use mesh to extend the wifi range, I'll place one next to the router.

Just came to OzBargain to set a deal notification for Starlink as I need to move to rural WA in the next few weeks, thanks for the post!

  • +1

I've had Starlink in Canberra for a few months now. Max I could get on NBN was about 52 down and lots of drop outs which were super frustrating. Starlink has been super reliable so far, and normally get anywhere between 150-400 down, 25 up and 25-30ms which is plenty fast enough for me.

  • thinking of just grabbing this as a spare, my gen 2 is reaching 2 years old, had the router replaced since it died and burnt out (luckly replaced for free, they're 300bux alone otherwise) the other month since it died, getting worried about the good ole dishy up there. Do you need to sign up as you get it?

This seems to be happening more and more.

Do you need to sign up as you get it

No you don't. You can buy the kit from a retailer (like JB, OW, HN) and then put it into the cupboard.

  • Why would you not buy from bunnings for $267 (PB OW)?

    • Because at the time of posting, the other retailers had not done any price matching yet.

    • Also you cannot use a referral (a month free) if you buy from a third party.

      (what does PB OW mean?)

      • Also you cannot use a referral (a month free) if you buy from a third party.

Yes you can, I have done it before.

        what does PB OW mean

        PB - Price Beat

        OW - Officeworks

        Price Beat at Officeworks

        • How do you use the referral in that case? It says in the support section that kits purchased from a retainer are not eligible. Do you apply the referral code just when signing up for a plan?

Do you mean going to Bunnings to price beat Officeworks? Does that only work in-person, and does it work if the prices are the same? I'm just near a Bunnings with stock, so might do that today if that's how it works. Cheers.

          • +1

Just use the referral link (which I won't post to avoid banning) and then tick that "I already have a kit" on the order. It worked, and it was also reflected on my account as an additional referral unless it's changed.

Do you mean going to Bunnings to price beat Officeworks? Does that only work in-person, and does it work if the prices are the same? I'm just near a Bunnings with stock, so might do that today if that's how it works. Cheers.

Well Officeworks and Bunnings are the same price, so you can't price beat. If Officeworks was $298 and Bunnings was $297, then you could go to Officeworks and do a price beat on Bunnings.

For the sake of a few dollars, price beat can be such a hassle. I'd just go to Bunnings or whatever is closest and get a kit.

$299 ish is better than $599, so you are still saving a lot.

            • @geekcohen: I looked into getting a kit locally, but it said somewhere in terms that even if you apply a referral during setup that you won't be awarded the free month unless it's a kit bought directly from starlink.

              • @JandersC: Must've chance since I did it.

              • @JandersC: I confirm that the referral still happens if the kit is sourced elsewhere. Unless someone else used my referral link by chance, but someone who I know signed up this morning used, my referral count has gone up 1. The online documentation could be specific for the US where they have just released the referral program, been going for a while in AU.

Its a shame that they don't show in the profile who used it to make it easier to track.

  • +1

I got the kit home this afternoon, put it on the ground in the yard just to run through the setup before putting it in a proper location (tonnes of tree obstructions in the yard) and ran a speed test.

    310mbit down. I'm getting 43mbit with FTTN.
The up is only 7mbit, so hoping that will improve with a better mounting position on the roof.

Considering how much the app was warning about obstructions, I was shocked at the speed. I'm also getting less jitter than on the copper.

    • Speeds will improve when in its correct orientation and as it learns the Satellite patterns from your location. Upload should improve once it is set into a location.

      • +1

Yep, it has improved to around 20-25 up. The down link is pretty variable - anything from 70-350. I'll try to get it on the roof soon, but even like this it is significantly better than NBN (at around $50/mth more than what I was paying, but worth it)

  • if I buy the Kit now, do I have to buy the service along with it? or I can connect later, say couple of months after? Thanks

    • +1

You can sign up for the service later on, but you would need to buy from a retailer like JB, HN, OW etc. Cannot do it directly at Starlink.

    • Not sure if anything has changed, but last year I bought a dish from Starlink, used it during the free trial, never activated my plan (so I never paid the monthly fee), then eventually sold it back to Starlink.

      • That was probably during their Gen 2 period which was common. Haven't heard of it happening for Gen 3 Hardware.

  • Final Day of this deal. If anyone is interested in and want to see Real Time Starlink Speeds.

  • Need a deal on the service plan, so I can support them :) but nowhere soon since they have no competitor. China is getting something but CCP thing still

    • They won’t reduce plans. If anything, probably go up. The roaming has gone from $174 to $195 recently.
