It looks like brass, but it doesn't state what material it is. It says it is made in Australia. Should be better than my old, shrivelled-up sponge from Jaycar.

Usually dispatched within 2 to 4 weeks.

This traditional method is used when the tip is hot, to easily remove old liquid solder.

Could just wipe hot tip through cheap steel wool.

A damp sponge or rag also works. Used a sponge for decades of fine soldering.

Using a file on a hot soldering iron could burn you. And may ruin its surface even if cold. Much easier & quicker to use above methods.

I much prefer wet sponge. The sizzle and the tiny beads of solder are just much funner.

          It is satisfying😉

        • this is the way

Might be OK for big metal-workers' irons (think sticking them in the fire) but for electronics soldering irons even a light file will immediately set the tip up for premature / imminent failure. Terrible advice.

Wet sponge works but also reduces tip life due to increased stresses from thermal cycling. Keep it lightly moist, not wet. Probably not an issue for occasional users.

    • Since these are used to clean hot solder off the tip, a file wouldn't do much anyway (apart from destroy your tip).

If the tip is that bad that you'd consider taking a file to it, then tip cleaner/refresher paste is what you need.

    "my old, shrivelled-up sponge"

    Too much info

Could this be used to clean FDM 3D printer hot ends without damage the tip?

    • +1

I mean… Sure? Seems like a pain though. Just use a brass brush.

Or just use Stainless Steel Scourers from Coles, so much cheaper ha

Do not do this unless you want to destroy the soldering iron tips plating.

I used to work for the importer (although I haven't for a long time now, and have no affiliation with them), so I know this range is definitely not made in Australia, they're imported from China. "Country of origin: Australia" is right, if you want to know where the stock is right now, but it's not made here.

For anyone in Melbourne who wants one and is close to the city, they're the same price here: https://www.radioparts.com.au/product/38615202/zd10cb-solder….

The whole Doss soldering range (https://www.radioparts.com.au/search?ProductSearch=doss%20so…) is great for entry- to mid-level soldering. I've got some of their gear, as well as some more expensive stuff, and apart from some cheaper, brittle plastic that you need to be careful not to break, they're really good value.

Oh, I should add that it is brass, if anyone needs that confirmed.

  • IMO, wet (real, non-polymer) sponges all the way. About the same price for a 2-3 pack.
