  • Nice price but I bet my left nut that this system will be around this price on boxing day :)

    • +36

I will collect your nut if it's not

      • +1

It might have been collected already

      • +2

what are you going to do with his nut? play golf with it?

        • +15

Keep it as a spare in case he ends up in a similar predicament where his nut is also collected?

        • +2

          You guys are going Nuts…

      • +2

I'm sure he won't be too nutty about that…

        • +2

at least he had the balls to say it

        • +10

pretty cheap. I hope it's not a mistake by the sales person or he/she might get the sack

        • +7

I used to go to two different websites for my bargains and my testicle puns with no idea I could get them both at the same place. So convenient!

      • Why? Do you lack one? Or do you like to have three?

  • I suspect this will be region locked for DVDs (region 2 UK). Not that it really matters for most blu-rays and games…

    • +2

      hmmm good call.

I always wanted to have a massive DVD library, but I never got around to it.

Now it all sits on a single NAS

      • +2

I always wanted to have a massive DVD library, but I never got around to it.

        You chose wisely.

        • +6

You did pay for all that media right?
It's still most often cheaper to by a DVD or TV series then to buy digital media locked to the providers solutions. not only that you get the physical disc artwork and extras that you don't get digitally very often. Plus you have the cost of the NAS, storage and the risk of data loss. I can take a disc to a friends house easy too. Plus you can 'back up' copy to your NAS in your preferred codec / contain as you like.

        • Yeah I have a few DVDs, and still buy blu-rays - haven't found a cheaper way to buy films in decent quality yet - I was more referring to almost everyone I know buying literally hundreds of DVDs - some still in the shrink wrap because they never watched them - then buying it all again on blu-ray.

          Bring on Steam for Movies.

  • +1

    bought.. thanks op

    • Is it really 186? my checkout shows 193 though, should I turn off currency exchange? did you add 20 pounds games with promotional price ? the bundle price is like 235 AUD for me.

      • +2

        i bought the bundle..

        ps3 12gb + fifa 2013 + giotech controller for £147 delivered.

        • bought the console only, not sure my bank 's rate to GBP. next target would be the PSN membership code.

        • +1

the game is not £20. it is actually £22.99 including delivery

        • I think its only the controller triggers not the actual giotech controller.

        • you're right.. lucky I managed to cancel it. thanks

        • How did you get it for that?
          I see Fifa 13 at £39.79???

        • as stated in the deal description, we can add one game for £20 yesterday.

      • +1

I turned off currency converter as Amazon's rate is pretty poor. My bank gives me a better rate on my credit card. Also have to pay a fee but still cheaper than getting Amazon's rate.

And I didn't buy any additional games.

        • +1

To give you an idea I bought just the 12GB PS3 last night - checked my credit card transactions today and it has come up as $186.45. So $7 cheaper than the Amazon rate. Typically the fee will only be a dollar or so.

        • Thanks to clarify this, I'm glad that I chose to turn off the Amazon exchange converter too.

        • Use 28 degrees mastercard and get an excellent rate and pay no fee

  • Great price!

  • will need a power converter for this yeah? Any other implications buying UK stock?

    • UK has the same voltage as Aus so power converter is not required. They do use a different plug so you will need either a travel adapter or an Aus PC/monitor power cable which is easier and better and about $8 on eBay if you don't have one lying around or should be easy to find in Kmart etc.

      • thanks heaps

  • UK/AUS games are both the same, right? I thought we share regions with UK in regards to DVD/Blu Ray/games?

Can someone please correct me if I'm wrong. My ps3 just shat itself :(

I have heard that the HDD bracket doesn't come with the 12GB version.
Since my ps3 just shat itself I'm planning on using the HDD bracket from the broken one and upgrading this one with a bigger HDD. Anybody know if that would work?

    • +5

For Bluray, we share the same region as the UK.
For DVD, we do NOT share the same region as the UK.
PS3 games aren't region controlled. Any game can play on any console.
PS3 DLC is controlled by disc version, which can be different between the UK/OZ, but more often they're the same.

      • Thanks buddy, so there is no way to get this console to play AUS DVD's?

Edit: Never mind. Just read up on the subject looks like there is no way of doing it.
UK DVD is region 2 - AUS DVD is Region 4.

Have a mass DVD collection so I guess I'll wait for a boxing day sale or Ozbargain to help me out with an AUS version

    • +1

Note the bracket from your old slim/phat PS3 will not fit the new PS3, you'll need to buy a new bracket to fit a HDD to the 12GB version

      • Cheers mate

        • +2

You don't really need a bracket/caddy. Just fill in paper, or other non-conductive material.

        • -1

          Al-foil?

        • +2

A4 paper is fine in my xbox360 slim hard disk slot . don't use Aluminium foil, it's conductive.

        • +2

I was saying it for the lol's :(

Cheers for the heads up though bro, would have bought the caddy otherwise.

  • +1

Com'on aussie retailers, what are you thinking of now? you want your business to survive, give us all these cheap overseas console price now !!!

    • You're basically asking Aussie retailers to remove our VAT (GST).

      • ummm, yeah sure why not :)

        • +3

You'll end up paying it anyway, since it'll always be a 10% charge for domestic consumers.

          Circular logic.

  • To anyone looking to purchase a ps3 keep in mind that it makes a poor blu-ray compared to any modern stand alone player. The ps3 is very slow at booting up and loading discs. You should also keep in kind that if you are buying it for games 12gb isn't enough as many ps3 games require mandatory data installs before you can play them. Some data installs are >8gb and take over 30 minutes to install so even if you wanted to just swap between games by deleting the data afterwards it would make the waiting unbearable

    • +1

loading speed aside, it's actually known as one of the best BD players on the planet.

      • +1

Here is a copy-paste from a forum thread I found quickly:
"I got a standalone sony bdp s780 and pq wise it's better. Firstly, on ps3 u cannot adjust the 3d simulation level and you cannot adjust the 3d depth. ps3 doesnt convert 2d movies to 3d. ps3 does not allow to select color range in YCbCb output over hdmi. ps3 does not allow to sharpen edges of textures appearing on screen and it does not have SBM. With ps3, you cannot adjust the clear black levels. With ps3, the ARC feature does not work (most probably because ps3 has hdmi 1.3a and not hdmi 1.4). All the said features work with my standalone player.
PS3 is a decent 3d blu-ray player but it lacks the pq quality control features that top tier standalones offer."

The PS3 was known as one of the best BD players on planet in 2009 but times have changed and the hardware is outdated in it now. It has a poor 3d processor, poor upscaler and a very slow bd-rom drive. The OPPO players are regarded as 'best BD players on the planet' these days, but they are a lot more expensive than PS3 and don't play games :P

        • +2

3D picture quality and converting 2D to 3D can all be done by the 3DTV, they're not necessary on the player.

    • Just curious but can't you use thumb drives or even external hard drives as the extra storage space? And have also heard nothing but great things about the blu ray side of things.

      • Sorry was posting on my phone and the keyboard messed up and couldn't keep writing on the post. I was going to say that unlike the 360 you can replace the hard drive in the PS3 with any 2.5" one so upgrading the storage is still affordable.

        • Oh very nice indeed. So may actually be better off buying the cheap 12gb as you could find a decent hard drive to whack in cheaper than say the price difference of a 500gb ps3.

        • Yeah I went to Centrecom and got one of these:
          http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/hdtb110ak3ba-toshiba-can…
When they had them for $87. Took it out of the case and put it in my PS3, works good. I also used the USB3 case with a USB2 500gb I had lying around, pretty sweet upgrades =)

          Depending on where you are:
          http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=Toshiba+Can…
It looks like quite a few places have them for around $87 still so it's great price for a 1TB PS3, definitely beats the 500gb pricing going around. The only thing I read in these comments is that you will have to buy a drive tray for the ps3 or pad the empty area with a non-conductive material (such as paper)

    • +4

It's a slow player, but the firmware support will guarantee playback, unlike other players that manufacturers will just dump after a new model is released. This is exactly why the PS3 is still amongst the best for blu-rays.

    • +1

"The ps3 is very slow at booting up and loading discs."

Doesn't really matter when you consider how many of those silly unskippable drawn out anti-piracy warnings one had to sit through just to get to the MAIN MENU (and then the movie itself). I could've make popcorn in the meantime.

      • +5

Haha you raise a very good point, I hate those things. Doesn't it suck that they punish the honest customers with a million unskippable warnings yet if you torrent it you don't have to put up with it at all =(

  • I bought a used ps3 on friday for 150 :S.

  • Would there be a warranty on this, if it was purchased from UK? Also, is a power converter required?

    • No converter required, just need an AU plug. Just buy one of these - AC Power Cord 3-pin Australian Mains Plug to IEC C13 Socket. (Going by my fat PS3 which Sony probably hasn't changed but someone please confirm they have used for the new slim)

    • PS3 uses a universal power supply with a "double barrel" cable, same as PS2 & Dreamcast.

      One of these:
      http://foliefrog.jebolist.com/VG04-0064/005.jpg

You just need one with an Australian plug.

    • +1

have you ever tried to claim warranty via Sony, its the most painful experience ever. The only worse thing is asking Sony for permission to download your Sing Star songs again after you switch consoles, they treat you like a criminal because you upgraded the PS3…..to a PS3…OMG!

      • +1

Yes Warranty is an issue…..slow! soooo

      • hmm I'll need to get my singstar songs re-permissioned for the new ps3…. hope it is not a PITA

  • I'm waiting for the PS3 to drop below $200, will wait till Boxing Day. The new PS3 is a budget release, who knows what could go wrong, it hasn't been out long enough to judge if it's reliable enough, I'd rather have local warranty just in case.

    • Bought one today from Domayne Auburn for $197, no haggling required, as that was the advertised price there. Tried to ask if they can do it any cheaper and the answer was no. Bought for a friend, so wasn't really fussed. When I left, there were still plenty on the floor. HTH

  • has anybody found a source/website to purchase the correct double barrel power cord with the australian adapter?

  • +1

JB are doing the 12GB for $229 tomorrow

Worth the extra $43 for warranty and AUS DVD comparability imo

  • +1

If anybody needs the bracket for HDD upgrade. JB are selling them for 11.95 full price. Got one yesterday.

I wonder if I should post this as a deal, in case people are looking for cheap PS3 consoles with local warranty?

    • Do you mind posting the receipt so we can price match, cheers
