  • is it possible to prepay $200?

    • +1

That's what I was thinking (I'm in credit thanks to various government's handouts) and I'm sure that will be fine as Amex won't be able to tell if you are prepaying…

On the other hand T&Cs state this is for new customers only… but again how would Amex know if you are a new customer???

      • I'm guessing you can try paying $200 and ask for a refund after the cashback arrives? (provided you have positive balance after the payment)

        • Most places will refund back to the original payment method when you ask for one (anti-money laundering), and Amex will take back the credit if it sees a refund.

          • @wangasm: I requested for a refund last year and they sent it to my bank account on file (I have direct debit set up)

            • @foxes28: Was that with credit card as the original payment?

          • -2

@wangasm: go look up what money laundering means.

            • @askbargain: I think it means Coles Selling prepaid visa cards at a 10% discount?

          • @wangasm: Nah, if amex has given credit, they won't take it back.

            • @lgacb08: Thanks, didn't know know they don't take it back despite it being in the terms

              • @wangasm: I've pulled this trick several times in the past, amex always do this cashback type with one of the energy retailers every year and I maxxed out leaving me with hundreds of credit by the time the deal expires. And when when other retailers came with better rates I just switched. Some would give me credit back as cheque or bank transfer, others only refunded back to the original card paid and they all went back. It's practically impossible for amex to track those credit and simply not worth it.
But each year this energy deal is becoming less attractive, used to be worth half a year of utilities but nowadays it's peanut, you get better by just switching.

          • @wangasm: It was a unique case, they gave me $150 credit as they failed to give me 30K EDR points for sign up bonus. Once it’s landed in my account, I requested for a refund and they gave it to me lol.

I get where you’re coming from with the AML measures but $200 won’t trigger any alarm

            • @foxes28: It wasn't a question of whether it triggers an alarm, just if they let you refund to a bank account if the original payment came from a card. In your case there was no original payment method for that $150 credit because it came directly from Origin, so the appropriate option is a bank account. But if the above is true about Amex not taking back the credit if the original transaction is refunded then I guess all this doesn't matter

    • Yes but the offer is valid till the end of the year so no reason to prepay yet IMO

    • +1

I just prepaid my account so I’ll keep ya’ll posted if I get the cashback.

      • Did you get any congratulations email? I prepaid, but no received no email.

        • I haven’t received anything from Amex as yet but it is still only showing as a pending charge so maybe once it clears.

Update - I can confirm I now have the $20 credit for the prepayment I did.

t&c "Offer only valid for new residential and business customers who sign up to an Origin service (electricity, natural gas, or internet)."

  • Signed up but not currently with origin lol

  • Finally a decent offer.

  • +1

This would be good to stack with the EDR or Referral offers for new customers

  • “Offer only valid for new residential and business customers who sign up to an Origin service (electricity, natural gas, or internet).“ lol what a dumb term.

    • residential and business customers

True, hardly anybody will be both…

Origin don't accept AMEX as a payment method last time I checked.

    • They do (I’m using the app)

      Amex was recently added

      • Yay !!!

  • How would amex know if you're an existing or new customer?

    Any existing customers tried it?.

    • That info will be included with the transaction data sent to AMEX.

    • +6

      I'm an existing customer.
received my gas bill this morning.
have paid it with my amex just now..
      lets see what happens :)

      • Okay cool, let us know.

      • +5

Amex email received to say "thanks for using the origin offer" but no credit as yet

      • +1

Good to know you got an email after using it on existing account. Thanks for reporting back.

      • Thanks for testing this.

Mine showed $200 pending for days and now has charged, and $20 credit arrived. I am elec customer (existing) and paid $200 using origin website. I had an outstanding balance of like $250 for upcoming bill. So, it works !

        • +1

got my credit this morning too.
now used my other amex to pay my electricity today

    • Globird had an offer where they checked that the account holder matched the name on the credit card. I paid a relatives account only to have it refunded.

Their bill came with an generic warning about paying your bill through a third party for a discount. They must have checked this with AMEX as the name is not required when making a payment.

      • Their check may be just simple checking the name of the card entered, but that can be bypassed easily because with card payment name doesn't matter, only card number, expiry and cv matter so you technically can use your card details with your relative name on it and no one know, just like bsb and account number not linked with name but that's about to change soon. I believe even with amex even expiry date doesn't even matter because there's more than once I entered incorrect month and payment went through.

        • The card name wasn't asked for when paying, they must have checked it with amex on the backend.

  • Anyone get this on the Plat Edge?

    • only on primary. not on qantas discovery

  • +4

I paid my mums Origin bill which is in her name & got the $20 credit. She was an existing customer.

  • Out of interest, does anyone get credit card surcharge when paying in AMEX?
