Canon EOS 1100D Single 18-55 IS Mk II Lens Kit. $449 Dick Smith

20

It's that time of the year when the low-end DSLR deals come out!

I was looking for a cheapie DSLR as photography is not a hobby of mine so was going to go for the usual HN $397 EOS 1100D deal with the standard non-IS lens. Just one for occasional holiday use etc. Base model only really required.

Then I saw the GG's 1100D non-IS twin lens kit for $645, good price, but more than I wanted to really spend.

As a last resort I checked Dick Smith and saw this deal. Seems good for my needs with the bonus of an IS lens.

I know you get what you pay for but I really won't be using it too often (hoping I don't get the bug for it!). This would go well the gift card deal posted here http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/86444 if you get your cards tomorrow!

P.S. I know they had a deal on these at $399 but that was a limited stock online only 150 unit offer. They were even willing to reduce by $20 for the cabinet display model (unused). Try your luck as I got a bit off as I bought other stuff while there.

  • Would the 600D from Kogan be any better @ $499 + P/H ? Link
Looking at getting either a 600D or 650D (local or Int) for $600… :P
    I don't like the 1100D, from the reviews I've read…

I know it might be a bit late, but for people looking at an entry level DSLR kit, I'd have to recommend the D3100.
Which happens to be on sale at Harvey Norman at the moment for $494 (with 100 free prints too!)
    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/nikon-d-dslr-mm-single-lens-k…
(This doesn't appear to be advertised on the main HN sale page, even in the camera listing page it shows the normal price of $547… I accidentally stumbled across it while looking for a present for my brother yesterday)

If you want to compare what the extra $45 get you, check out snap-sort's comparison here:

(This is the second time this weekend I have recommended a Harvey Norman product… Something is not right here!)

Funnily enough, the better model, D5100 is on sale at Harvey Norman for $483 (body only). I would go that one over the 3100 any day, and then get a quality used lens instead of the kit lens with the 3100.

Again, you have to add it to your cart for the price to be dropped, I think it's the 11% discount they are offering.

I was tempted to buy the D5100 from HN at $483 versus $438 (incl shipping) from Kogan, but I'm not sure if the benefit of buying a local Aus stockist is worth it over Kogan?

      • Fully agree that the D5100 is a far better camera, however, the once you buy a lens etc the price increases a bit. As I said earlier the 1100D is the cheapest entry-level DSLR that gives you all you need to start off for a fairly low price.

If I find that I like taking photos a lot more with this camera then I'm not too fussed about cutting my teeth on this an moving on to something much better. Just a toe in the water for now so to speak :P

      • HN = Nikon Australia peace of mind local 2 year Warranty

Kogan = Kogan 1 year warranty ( not from Nikon australia)

        • I thought that might be the case but when i checked on the HN page, it just said 12 month manuf warranty…

      • The cost of a lens means it's not a 1:1 comparison but. With that budget you start looking at Canons 600D's or 650D's as opposed to the 1100D.

Regarding the D3100, might be a good option. Whether the buyer thinks they would like to go Canon or Nikon in the future may be a bit Factor. Presumably you aren't going too crazy with after market lenses with a 1100D starting point however.

  • I was looking for a cheapie DSLR as photography is not a hobby of mine

In that case you'd be better off getting a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera instead of an SLR, such as a micro four-third or an APS.
They offer much better quality pictures compared to the compact cameras, similar flexibility as the SLRs but without the bulk and weight.
As such you will be more inclined to carry it with you on all your trips and to get it out of its bag more often to shoot pictures. It will likely to have more useful features than an entry level SLR too.

  • Hi, I am thinking of getting the Nikon D3200 or the D5100. Can anyone give me some advice on this and which one of these two cameras are better?

    Thanks

D5100 is the better camera with the better sensor.
just Google d5100 vs d3200 and there's heaps on it. Megapixels are pretty much irrelevant.

      • I have a D7000 which has same or similar sensor to D5100, it is fantastic, but I have heard D3200 sensor is actually a little better, in terms of resolution and high iso noise is about the same(DxOmark). I would probably go the D3200. They are both entry level cameras, but D3200 has newer sensor and newer CPU and it is very compact.

  • If anyone's interested I just got the D5100 body only from JB HiFi for $460.
It came with 2 years manufacturer warranty as JB is an authorised Nikon seller, which made it better than the $438 deal from Kogan with 12 month kogan warranty.

I know lenses can be expensive, but they can also make an average camera pretty amazing. I plan to get a decent lens second hand for under $250 (17-50mm f2.8) and pair the two up. It does result in a set up closer to $700 than the OPs original deal, but probably also a world apart in terms of image output…

    • 17-50mm F2.8 second hand? Where? I want to buy one too. Yes for $22 difference, definitely get it from JB. Too much of a hassle getting warranty with gray imports.

      • Gumtree! One locally for $250, luckily with nikon mount :)

        • I made the assumption you were talking about a Nikkor lens, but $250 is still a great price for a third party lens.

        • Haha i wish!
