  • Is this genuine?

Urrrgh it doesn't charge the laptop, that's a bit of a downer, I couldn't possibly plug in 2 cables every time I actually go to the office!

    • +1

      oh, whack
bit of a dealbreaker there lol

      • +3

Is this based on anything? USB-C can handle this fine.

      • +4

This isn't even close to being true

      • Probably why most laptops really need a dedicated USB-C

How does having a separate USB-C connector help? Even if you use a dedicated USB-C power cable, you still have to plug it in and out as many times as you would a docking station. Besides, USB-C has dedicated power and data wires, so whether you send just power or data (which is transmitted at a much lower voltage and current) or both makes no difference to the connector longevity.

The whole point of using a dock is that you don’t have to plug in and out multiple cables (e.g., display, network, peripherals, power, etc.). If wearing out or damaging the ports on your laptop is a concern, then using a dock is the solution.

How can plugging in one USB-C cable for everything be worse than plugging in a USB-C cable for power and a bunch of other cables for everything else? Your argument doesn’t make any sense.

        • On second thoughts, I agree with the negative comments, there is actually no benefit given how power is routed to a USB-C laptop from the power supply.

          Apologies all!

  • Anyone know if these are good?

    • Been using it since like 2018 from memory and still works well. Nothing fancy. It is a steal at this price paid almost $200 last time for 1

Suggested use: web and productivity software; not recommended: gaming, video playback, 2D/3D graphic tools

    • Wait can that do 4k at 60Hz at least?

      • +1

        4k@60Hz. Yes.

one of the photos says DUAL 4k 60hz

Love the caveat emptor: ”Due to limited USB 3.0 bandwidth and reduced hardware graphics acceleration of the DisplayLink software and hardware used in this docking station we do not recommend it for use with full screen video playback, 2D or 3D graphics applications, or video editing software.”

One of the Amazon 1* Reviews :

Don't buy if you plan to use for gaming or watching movies. This product relies on software compression to achieve a 60hz video signal. In reality it is 30hz at best if only using 1 screen. The software compresses the video signal and only sends the pixels that change to try to achieve 60hz. Anything full screen full motion video is 30hz or less. I am not able to use it to watch movies @ 4k which is disappointing. If you just plan to look at spreadsheets all day or surf the internet then this product is ok. Lastly I had to set each monitor to 60hz by plugging directly into the laptop HDMI port, then replug into the dock to get the 60hz setting to be available. From install it was only showing 30hz and would not allow me to select 60. Driver's also cause a much slower system boot.

  • question please.
currently using laptop with a dock that output to 2 external monitors (max is 2). if i want to get another monitor (so 3 externals setup), can i connect the third monitor directly to the laptop's hdmi ? (doesnt have DP just HDMI).
and i want all 3 monitors to be in extend mode not mirror

    • Probably. I've a dock that outputs to 3x 1080p (two HDMI, one DP) in extend mode. I don't need 4k, but need slots of real estate. The laptop screen works too, but I simply don't have room lol. Charges laptop on what is says is 100 watt passthrough, but laptop complains it's a low-power charger.

      • wow dont see many dock with triple but i dont want to spend on new dock and new monitor if possible. hmm your dock with 3 screens, maxed at 30hz not so good :)
same here i only put team chat on my work laptop .. 14" is too small for anything else.
my 2 monitors are 32"4k and 22"HD but sometimes i wish i have another monitor

        • Yeah, pretty sure it's outputting 3x 1080p at 60Hz though. Would need to be home and check, 30Hz would do my eyes in.

    RRP 3 years ago maybe…

  • Thanks, seems like a decent USB hub, even if that's all I will end up using it for. Ordered 1.

Just FYI, this is a DisplayLink dock, which require additional CPU/GPU resources and software to compress the video signal before they are sent out to the dock. This is quite different from newer Alt Mode USB-C docks, which work directly with your graphics adapter’s output and don’t require additional processing or software on the computer. Therefore, DisplayLink docks are not good for high-resolution, high-framerate/refresh-rate and high resource intensive applications like gaming.
