  • Samsung Fold 6 or Google Pixel Fold……similar price. Which one has better screen folding design?

    • +14

As someone who has had both (albeit it only a few days with the Pixel Fold), definitely the latter. For me, the reasons are:

*Prefer the stock android experience though Samsung One UI is very good nowadays
*The Pixel cameras tend to be better than Samsung foldables cameras (which are usually a step down from their Galaxy Ultra camera modules)
*Price - right now you can get $1000 bonus trade in credit on a Pixel Fold which takes it down to $1697 (less than the Fold) - I 'traded' in an old iPhone 8 valued at $1 and got $1000 off for it
      *Its slimmer
*Screen brightness superior on the Pixel Fold

Most of all, for me any time I got a Samsung foldable, I ended up finding the outer screen really annoying as it is narrower than a normal phone whereas the Pixel Fold has basically put a normal sized Pixel on the outside. Whilst its a foldable, you'll find yourself using it much of the time folded just because you need to do something quickly. I'd unfold for web browsing/media purposes, but you do also use it folded up and really disliked how narrow the Samsung foldables outer screen was

Thats just my 2 cents and others may feel differently, but hope it helps :)

      • How about performance? Is Samsung much faster than Pixel? How about the Hinge? Which one do you think will last longer?

        • All good questions. I'm not much of a 'power user' so the performance questions are probably best for someone else, but from what I've been reading from tech reviews etc, the Tensor G4 seems to be performing very well both in terms of power but particularly in terms of power efficiency.

I felt the hinge is similar as they both go 100% flat now but in terms of lasting longer, I'd probably back the Pixel but that is based solely on my experience so far which hasn't been more than a few days in the case of the Pixel Fold

@jay889344: As a relatively new foldable user (Flip 6 owner) here are some quick for and against's:

            Good:
            - Reminds me of my schooltime flip phone
            - Stores well in my pocket
            - Folds fully flat (most foldables do these days)
            - (Flip 6) has flagship cpu so i'm not giving up too much performance
            - I got a pretty decent starting deal via gov discount (I think out of pocket was like $700 after all the discounts and bonus trade in discounts

            Bad:
-Screen durability is non-existent, the fact that I have to worry about dust and fingernails is craaazy.
            - Battery is so so, it'll last a day with managed usage but if you use your phone alot it'll die pretty quick.
            - Heat management during any kind of use over scrolling through webpages causes heat build up where you place your fingers/hand (reverse outside screen). It's kind of crazy to think that without the vapour chamber (all previous generations of the same model) the heat distribution and almost instant thermal throttling would be worse. This makes it pretty bad to game with, as it'll run pretty smooth for maybe 2 minutes before that Snapdragon Gen 3 gets dragged into the hot depths of hell and your performance tanks.
            - No Dex, now for aforementioned reasons I understand why this isn't a thing. Don't think it'll be any good to use with the thermal issues the way they are but this is a feature of Samsung's that when paying RRP 1600+ I would have hoped to have/try.
            - Camera's are bad. This is with the main sensor ugprade, no zoom and poor thermal management means that the 4k 60fps is limited in usage (it lags - tried at a concert last Friday night and it didn't like it), low light performance is atrocious etc. I think a nothing phone would be a reasonable comparison and I believe you can find those for like $400 in Australia e.g. 1/4 the price.
            - Crease isn't better than the previous generation, all the reviewers that said so had fresh out of the box devices. When I took mine from the box it was also almost perfectly flat, now after a month or so of usage it's um…no longer flat. It's not bad, but 110% noticeable even during high brightness use.
            - Samsung UI is definitely not better than the first in line android experience that pixel users get. The fact I can no longer tell my alarms to stop is dreadful since I got used to not having to walk over to my desk just to turn off the alarm. At least I wake up faster now??

Overall even though I was willing to put down the cash for my phone, after using it I think it's a gimmick. After a few years I think I will be swapping back to a slab phone.

      • Where did you find the $1000 trade in?
Is it a store credit or taking it off the final price?

        • JB and Harvey Norman are both doing $1000 bonus trade in, taken off the price of the phone

          • @jay889344: does the jbhifi tradein need the device to be a phone or any device in their category?

            • @fadzsolz: Go on the website and take a look mate. Easier than me trying to list out all the categories

              • -1

@jay889344: not my question. the ad states phone for JB while for HN its any device.
If anyone has verified info on getting a voucher for a device other than a phone, I would like to know.

                • @fadzsolz: Why don't you just give it a go and see if it works? If it doesn't, then just cancel the trade in

                  • @jay889344: Did that they cocked up the trade in - chaged my card but no voucher. Anyone using jbhifi please be careful. The support is very poor as well wasn’t able to get through to an agent on the callback number for an hour and was told the team is in US

                    • @fadzsolz: Damnnnnn

                      • @jay889344: was able to get a tradein with an apple watch, so you do get a coupon with all devices it seems. will cancel the older order. could be the first one just zonked out.

        • I think it finishes today or tomorrow but Harvey Norman offer 12 months mobile freedom (basically insurance for damage, screens & upgrades) when you buy a fold in store. JB had it initially but $249~ per year now.

          • +1

@Osiris: I'm not sure about HN but the JB $1000 bonus trade in is going until the 11th Sep

            • @jay889344: yep I wasn't clear, I was just referring to the mobile freedom part of HN in store offer (since they are both offering the $1000 trade in, the bonus from HN could be worth paying jerry a visit).

              • @Osiris: Ahhhhhh gotcha now you've said that, I read it that way! LOL

            • @jay889344: Checked and trade in price for my old Samsung is same as before. How to claim $1000 trade in?

      • Have you found the inner screen useful? What are your use cases?

I love the idea of a folding phone, but cant seem to justify it. So I am finding reasons to haha.

        • +1

I feel like its just one of those things you have to experience to appreciate! Haha. Even just sitting on a train watching some YouTube/live sports in my case or doing some web browsing/reading the news, its just so nice to do it on a beautiful big screen that you can then fold back into your pocket at an instant. Basically any media consumption on it is awesome vs the traditional candy bar phone

          • @jay889344: Fair enough. I'm rocking a Pixel 5 and the fold would be ginormous if I find the XL buy already.

I'll wait till there are some test models and see. Or maybe I'll just take the leap when there is a good deal

          • -1

@jay889344: Given the aspect ratio when unfolded, the actual video is not much bigger than a slab max/ultra phone.

        • u really have to ask? for media consuption….. :)

      • is the tradein offer on the galaxy website - does it stack with student discounts?

      • I thought the Pixel Fold release was tomorrow? Haha. I've been waiting for some reviews to pop up before I pulled the trigger.

I had the Z Fold 2 back in the day, but found the outside screen too narrow for day-to-day use, and the external screen too cumbersome to use while out and about. Also the phone was too heavy.

Really tempted by the form factor of the Pixel Fold… The $1000 trade in bonus at JB brings it down to the same sort of price as the regular 9 Pro / 9 Pro XL…

        • +1

It is tomorrow :P Working in supply chain in tech/devices has some perks! LOL

      • I also love that the outer screen is essentially the same as the ones on the Pixel 9 series, and by extension a normal phone as I found the ones on the Z Folds just a bit too narrow.

      • What you mean you trade in iPhone 8 for $1000? On the Google shop iPhone 8 256g trade in price is $40
And my beloved S20 Ultra for $130 :(

      • Some unfortunate negatives being someone that wanted to buy one:

You can't write on the screens. On the Samsung you can write on the unfolded screen only.

Square shape of the pixel fold makes the viewing aspect of things a bit off. Unless you like playing GBA games, might be great for that

    • I've never used a stylus. Are they much of an advantage with the Samsung?

  • Does anyone know if bonus trade in credit will be increased again to $400 for the flip6 or will they increase to 30% off again?

  • Wow,.thats a big discount

    • +4

not as good as the initial tradein launch offer. got a zf6 for 1200$ with tradein of a $5 watch.

      • wow, that's best value i think.

        • yeah the only reason i got it - other than the first fold2 where i paid near retail, every other fold has been at 50% off atleast. That price makes it worth it as after i get bored i can sell at almost what i paid.

      • You did even better than me…I used that but paid $1600ish to get the ZF6, Buds 3 Pro (w/ clear case), and 1 year Samsung Care+ after ZF2 trade-in.

Massive upgrade for me tho, this thing is a lot more refined than 4 generations ago lol

  • Beware before buying Fold 6, in just one more month Samsung will be releasing special edition of the Fold 6, which honestly what the Fold 6 should be now. Honestly having purchase myself I also regret, should have waited. Yes it may be limited to certain region, but I am sure there will tons importer available. Also you never know Samsung may even released globally when their sales dropping like flies.

    • based on leaks, z fold 6 special edition will be thinner but remove the pen support.
Well, thats a No for me

      • Double check….the more recent update it does support S pen. Logically why would they ditch s pen in the chinese market when they want to compete the Chinese fold which support S pen and super thin? Its no sense…I am very certain it will come with S pen.

  • -5

Nah don’t buy this. iPhone 16 coming

    • +2

apples and oranges. if you like folding devices and android - fold is not bad.

    • New iPhone - basically same design every year and adding iOS 'features' to others had 5 years ago. Why wait for that?

  • -6

Commonwealth employees should be careful in going for this offer. Code of conduct implies you can’t use your role as a public servant to get discounts etc because integrity, etc.

IT security policies are also against using work emails for stuff like this - using work email to grab a discount is not “incidental personal use”.

Go get an education discount instead if you have kids, know someone who studies etc.

    • +1

Its totaly fine, except if you abuse it. How do you thing the gov portal and any other gov schemes born? One of their PR make a deal with the vendor to get those discount.

  • +1

Samsung modus operandi - Launch it at ridiculous RRP's you know cant sell at and then run sales thorughout the year. I pre-ordered one and it cost me appox $1300, sold it off for profit.

  • -1

Yeah the pre-order/launch offer was way better. I snagged the ZF6, Buds 3 Pro (w/ clear case), and 1 year Samsung Care+ for $1600ish after trading in my beat up ZF2…

    • +1

Well you still had to trade in the zf2…

  • I like my fold but agree with some comments the front screen is just too narrow.

I really don't like the overly curved corners on the pixel pro though.

    Oh well I'll wait until fold7 ;)

    • +1

Coming off the ZF2, this one's screen is a lot better in that regard. Veryyy narrow on ZF2 lol
