  • been waiting for another dip since I missed it last time, thanks!

Super cheap. Just watch out for heat even keeping my 5900X cool can be a mission sometimes

    • Yes, definitely needs a CPU cooler to match

Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120SE for $55 hard to beat for value: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0BNVG4ZGS
I've got one on my 5900X and it does great.

        • Nice, what sort of temps do you get while gaming? I'm using a 360mm radiator currently with my 5900x but I wished I went air cool because the noise is sometimes too loud for my liking.

        • +2

Agreed. I've just installed a Thermalright Assassin X120 SE ($30.90) on my new 5700X3D and it handles it with ease.

Been using a Deepcool AS500 PLUS for years now on my 5900x, seems to be fine with gaming

      • +1

Yep, got a Deepcool AK400 which is a bit weaker and it works wonderfully.

We're in a fantastic time for cheap well made, effective coolers

      • Don't think gaming can really cap out a 5900x. You need to be using all cores on both CCD to do that. Personally using a Zalman CNPS20X.

Have you tried undervolting? Although in my case, it was a mix of voltage correction and undervolting.

For reasons unbeknownst to me, the default voltage that loaded up on my gigabyte x570i motherboard for my 5950x was 1.5V so I was having heat issues, was hitting single core peaks of 4.5ghz and all core peaks of 4ghz at 90C with a 240mm AiO. I ramped the voltage down with -0.15V offset and applied -25 offset on 6 cores and -30 offset on the other 20 cores and now single core boost hits 5.1ghz (10 cores can hit this) and all core boost is stable at 4.8ghz at 65-70C.

      • I settled on a Cryorig H7 which works pretty well now although given it’s an ITX rig they naturally are harder.

        • Mine's in an ITX rig as well. Running a Jonsbo V8 case and using a bequiet 240mm AiO. The undercoating works surprisingly well.

    • I initially used the Ryzen 9 5950x with a 120mm water cooler. You can simply dial down the power in the bios to suit the cooler (eg 120w) along with slight undervolt and you'll get stock performance.
For ultimate performance you'll want a bit more cooling, I now have a Thermaltake 360mm cooler (bargain btw) which can cope with around 230w with reasonable fan noise, giving about 25% extra performance. 30000 in cinebench R23
I use this setting for heavy workloads, but a reduced setting of 200w for general use and quiet fans, around 29000 in cinebench. 4.6ghz all cores

TLDR performance is limited by the cooling, you can still get stock performance with a 120mm cooler

      • I use the free "Quick CPU" app when on Windows and its very convenient to park cores and other stuff to get lower TDP.
The CPU is so powerful that for many desktop tasks you only need a handful of cores.

    AM4 is just freaking awesome.

    This is a great price

  • Finally pulled the trigger! Thank you Op!

Ultimate upgrade for productivity…unless you are gaming in which case it isnt.

Ultimate best performance to $$ ratio upgrade on the am4 platform would be the 5700x3d ($230-250) half the TDP also.

Even for future proofing if you are primarily gaming its not worth the extra $.

    • +2

      But 5800X3D > 5700X3D. 5950X and 5800X3D are the current peaks of AM4.

      • +3

There is marginal difference between the 5700 and 5800 X3D parts

      • 5800x3d is a 5-6% performance increase at double the cost.

    • I find (a reasonably powerful) CPU doesn't come into the equation if the game is GPU limited. No AAA games @ 60fps or VR @ 120fps I play on a RTX3080 TI come anywhere near stressing the CPU.

  • Why do Amazon global imports be cheaper sometimes …

Amazon UK US and Germany tends to have deals for us aussies, can anybody explain haha

    Showing 581 to me

  • Any point in getting this over a 12400f if I just do general desktop, business software and some gaming?

  • Just got mine today. Or rather, I didn’t! Sealed had been carefully cut open and CPU removed. Pretty scummy behaviour. Here's hoping Amazon fixed this.
